Hey all
I thought I had better post this up to let everyone know. I am planning a memorial cruise to the Mountain for another forum and thought I'd let LS1ers know about it too. Please correct me if theres already a cruise organised for this!
As we all know Peter Brock was killed last year in a motorsport event in Western Australia.
September 8 2007 marks the 1 year anneversary of his death.
There will be a mini cruise along the windy Bells Line Of Road, with a quick stop at McDonalds (assuming its not too busy) then onto the mountain.
So the details:
When? 8th September 2007
Where? Bells Line of Road to Bathurst (Brock Memorial)
Meet? At this stage I will make it the visitor info center carpark opposite the RAAF base at Richmond, but we may make it in Penrith and cruise from there.
What Time? Should be a 10:30 depart from Penrith or Richmond.
Cost? Just a fuel of tank and some money for lunch still TBA
Not only can we remember a great man, who got many of us behind the wheel of the mighty Holden, but it will give us a chance to pay our respects on the wall of Brocks Skyline, and hopefully give us a chance to see some nice cars.
Please keep in mind that because of the number of forums that have organised cruises for this day there will be a high police presence. Therefore please keep in mind there is a high chance your car may be pulled over and inspected. This said it also means hooning or reckless behaviour wont be tolerated from any attendee
Hope to see everyone there for a great day to remember a great man!

This one I'll be attending for sure. Lots of time to make a "booking" with the Mrs :)
I'll try to rally some others from the southern areas and we'll cruise up.
Y2kGoofball
12-08-2007, 12:25 AM
sweet, the date and route is set but I am still working on a time and meeting point, because alot of members attending from other sources are coming from the Liverpool/Bankstown area or from the city so I might make it somewhere easy to find in Penrith and then just head out too Richmond then onto the Bells from there.
But yes, if anyone knows anyone who is interested in attending please invite them along - forum member or non member because this day isnt about what car you drive or what forum your a part of, as Lowndes said on the podium at last years Bathurst "its more about the man himself then the manufacturer"
I should also mention if you can get your hands on a cheap handheld "walkie talkie" UHF CB get one! They are so valuable for events like this, not only to relay important info between cars, but to also add to the enjoyment. Some of the best conversations Ive been part of recently have been CB chat between 6 or 7 cars :)
I havent priced them myself but apparantly their going for as low as $20 at places like Supercheap and run off 3 or 4 AAA batteries which lasts the day. Cheap investment for the fun it adds to the day!

If you are going to buy a new two way then go for the highest wattage rating for the price. The higher the wattage, the greater the distance you can communicate. This is especially important when driving up Bells due to the mountainous conditions. We experienced this just last month when communication was impossible around corners even though we were all within a few hundred metres of one another or so.

This day is 1 not to miss, I reckon the old town of bathurst wont know what hit it. Even with all the crowds in the past. I am sure car clubs from all over the country will be converging on this spot on the day.
Still cant beleive it...........

thanks for the info Angelo as I am going to try and time ours a bit differently to everyone elses so we dont get mixed in with other groups coz the last thing we want is to be mixed in with another group if they start to go a bit crazy on the road
As for the comment there should be alot less hassles with boys in blue yeah right!! I will guarantee they'll be on patrol along the highway and Bells due to the number of forums taking both routes :1peek:
But anyway it'll be a good day out

unfortunatley cops dont really care what car group your with, they see idiots driving dangerously they generalise and take it out on everyone there :vpo:
as proven in the weeks after brockys death last year.
in the last few weeks we've had hundreds of police training on the mount in crowd control and other things, im sure they'd love to try out there new skills.
its going to be a great cruise but best behavior and staying out of the police way is highly reccomended!

I know mate, thats why I dont want to get mixed up with other groups on the way there or back
Only because I know the LS1 community, and the other 2 forum I have invited along dont tolerate the BS like some groups like to carry on with. They cant pick on you if your not doing anything wrong :eyes:

Is there any planned events for this in Bathurst over the weekend of the 8th and 9th September 2007 ?
Is the Car Museum at the track open on the weekends ?
Bathurst is a great place for a car festival, like the Woodford Festival in the U.K. which Brockie was so fond of, it would be a great idea for something like this to be held at Bathurst every year in Brockie's honour.
What do you think ?

I have heard from other forums members(Not this forum), that live in Bathurst, that Bathurst city council are expecting over 2000 cars over that weekend. The Peter Brock foundation will also be represented for the entire weekend.
I am going Sunday as unfortunately I will be working on the Saturday... :( But hey at least I will get a chance to pay my respects as I did last year fr a great racing car driver and legend.
Also REDVZSS6L is correct get the high watt radios..... going along the M4 could be different though. :)

sweet! It will be a good day and a good way to remember the man.
I dont know what we'll do for lunch though. If we throw in a little BBQ and some snags I dont know if we'll find room on the track to setup because everyone seems to have the same idea :1peek:
I dont know how we'll go somewhere local either, unless everyones happy just to do some "hit and miss" lunch? Theres a Holden Pub at Bathurst, dont know if their open for lunch tho, perhaps a Bathurstian can tell me? I'm sure we'll find somewhere though ...

sure is mate, great feed too. both the oxford and the eddy are holden pubs, both in the main street. might not have their holden signs up this time of year tho.
theres lots of room at the top of the mount for bbq'in, they've done alot of work up top since last race.

cool!
getting closer to the date I'll give definate times and meet places but there wont be a hassle with you guys coming from down south.
As for lunch we'll plan for a BBQ somewhere but be prepaired should the worst happen. Ive been reading a few other forums, I dont know whether it'll be easy to setup a BBQ lunch or whether it'll be hard or what the story is.
I would imagine Reid Park and Sulman etc would be open for that reason but you just never know!
I will stress once again I know for a fact there will be police everywhere between Penrith and Bathurst just waiting to pounce so please behave on the road.
As I read somewhere else, Peter was a cruisaider for road safety, just look at the origin of 05 (ie .05 BAC). On a day like this we dont need to prove to the FPV club or the Torana club or even ourselves my car has more power then yours or my tyres create more smoke then yours. What we need to do is remember why we are there and come out of it accident free and without our wallets taking a pounding. We're representing the LS1 group, lets not give us a bad name!
anyway good to see such support! I'll start an official list of LS1 attendees now to get an idea of who + how many are coming.

guys as far as car clubs go I think everyone in NSW is attending! Our group will be a combination of 3 groups because I cant just go with one, I've been lucky enough to be organiser for all 3 groups which has helped :1peek:
ausiemale and everyone YES BRING PERMANANT MARKERS.
They acctually did this last year too from memory (paint over the wall). Anyway I think you'll find the reason its made news today is because they know with 2000+ cars attending in a few weekends time they know the wall is sure to be marked again.
The can paint over it as many times as they want, they will never stop us from leaving our messages :flipoff:
I heard on the radio today "Brockie wouldnt mind it because he wouldnt have wanted to cause such a fuss" and while thats true, I also know Brockie would ne thrilled at the fact that no matter what group people are there with whether its the LS1, or a Commodore, or Torana/Monaro, or even FPV, Tickford, Toyota, rotary club .. whatever, I know he would be thrilled at the fact everyone can come together like that and cut the rivalry stuff, because I met so many people especially from the blue side last year who was feeling the pain as well, and we could cut the "your from the dark side" stuff and talk about what brought us there.

Council erases Brockie tributes - By Ray Kershler
August 22, 2007 01:00am
Handwritten tributes removed by council
Fans wanted wall preserved with clear cover
Brother angry at abstract art memorial
FANS of motor racing legend Peter Brock are outraged at the removal of scores of handwritten tributes, penned on a concrete safety barrier at Mount Panorama in the weeks after Brock's death.
Bathurst Council has painted over the "memorial wall", citing the need for a clean up of the Peter Brock Skyline section of the famous racing circuit.
But, the controversial move has angered fans who wrote the heartfelt messages as they grieved their hero's loss in a rally car event last year.
A suggestion to use clear paint instead of white to preserve the wall was rejected by council officials.
Some of Australia's top V8 drivers are among those who have voiced dismay at the decision of the council to obliterate the messages of fans with a coat of paint.
At the official launch of this year's Bathurst 1000 event in Sydney on Monday, Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes questioned the council's actions.
But, the decision was defended by one of Brock's close friends, former racer Brian Nightingale.
Nightingale said he was sure Brock himself would not have wanted any fuss over whether the tributes were left intact.
"I think the wall was seen as a bit of an eyesore and Peter would have said 'Let's get on with business'," he said.
Abstract Brock artwork slammed
Meanwhile, Brock's brother has slammed proposals for an abstract piece of artwork as a permanent memorial to the racing great at Mount Panorama.
Lewis Brock last night suggested a bronze "lifelike" statue of his famous brother would be a more fitting tribute than that currently under consideration by Bathurst Council.
The proposed sculpture, which resembles a collection of giant spears, would not represent Brock's nine Bathurst 1000 wins as well as a bronze statue, Mr Brock said.
"Everyone we have spoken to seems to want a bronze lifelike statue," said Mr Brock, the spokesman for the Peter Brock Foundation.
"There are statues of sportsman around the nation. Don Bradman in Melbourne, Wally Lewis in Brisbane, which are lifelike and in fact awe-inspiring.
"They are bold, they don't wear out and they stand the test of time and they become recognisable for future generations.
"Of course I am biased but I think Peter's statue should be similar and so do most of the people we speak to about it."

As we're 2 weeks away from the big day today, can anyone please confirm the meeting time and place so we can organise our own personal departure times. There's been at least 4 guys from Wollongong who've said they'll be driving up with me so far.

ok official departure time and location
Depart - 10:30am 08/09/07
From: Information Center Carpark
opposite Richmond RAAF Base - Richmond (or Windsor) Road, Richmond.
Obviously plan your own little groups along the way. It would be great if someone from each group could give me a mobile number and visa versa so should there be a hiccup or change of plan along the way at least everyone knows.
also because of the expected turn out tot he Mount, lunch will be a hit and miss affair. Bring some money for it, as for what and where we'll have to organise organise on the day, but more then likely a pub lunch of some description.

yeh supposed to rain :bawl:
The meeting spot opposite the RAAF base will continue with a depart time of 10:30am. We will look at the weather and decide whether we still take Bells Line of Road, because it is known for causing many accidents in the wet, or whether to take the much easier and safer Great Western Highway.
Update
Ok people now its coming into the final week heres the plan.
We will leave the Info center carpark opposite the RAAF base 10:30am. The plan is to head up Bells line but as I said if its too wet we'll go to plan B (highway).
Basically once we arrive we'll see whats happening, pull over somewhere and plan the rest of the day as we go. I say this because I'm not too sure whats happening and I am getting conflicting stories. The tracks going to be closed, no the tracks going to be opened, no parts of the track will be closed, no it'll all be open, no to this, but yes to the no, but no to the no. tis a bit of a mess for a small group organiser!
What I'm planning is getting there as a group, take a group photo or 2, do a honour lap or 2, head up to Brocks Skyline to leave our messages (assuming they let us ...) and let everyone do their own thing from there.
If you want to go to the museum great, if you want to do more honour laps or photo ops of your car and head home great, if you want to walk the track (I did it last year) great, what you do from there and when you leave is up to you.
I will end up staying for a little while then viewing the museum again and probably head to a club or pub in the township for lunch, and anyone interested is invited to tag along.
The BBQ idea wont go ahead because I cant find a BBQ and I'm not sure where we can setup so it'll be a hit and miss affair, drive till we find somewhere suitable. Weve done it in the past and its worked :)
I'm having real problems organising this one because no ones sure what to expect and no one can give me a clear idea whats acctually happening.
So we'll travel as a group, do a honour lap or 2 as a group, leave our messages as a group and go our own ways from there ...
also can I get everyone to confirm their attendance ...

urm yeh I was speaking to someone who lives out that way, they also said parts of the area will be closed due to APEC and the RAAF base.
Plan B
Its too close now to start umming and aaring so CHANGE OF PLANS to make it easier for everyone.
MEETING POINT NOW PENRITH PANTHERS CARPARK, Mulgoa Road Penrith. Leave time still 10:30am. We will be taking the Great Western Highway NOT Bells line.
We will be in the carpark to your right as you take the main entrance (near maccas).
This is because of parts of the area being closed dont help, and I dont want to be taking 30 odd cars along Bells line in the wet when so many have never been along there before. I know first hand its too dangerous in the wet.
If anyone wants my mobile number please PM me and I'm happy to hand it out.
Sorry for the confusion people :1peek:

The Wollongong contingent will be leaving Macca's Northgate at 8:30am as planned, and we'll be there with bells on!!

thanks for the idea fatas! We'll plan something.
BRING ALONG YOUR CAMERAS! A photo of the cars heading up mountain straight would be a good one I reckon
welcome to my pain of organising it! Sucks knowing these things are happening but no specific details and no one I spoke to today could help me out.

Hey, what about me Goof! It isn't fair.
Shame about the change of route but it is still possible, nothing dangerous about Bells even in the wet. It's just a cruise after all, not a race.
I have other business to attend to in Bathurst that day so I will be part of the group until we get to Kelso. I don't know yet if I will catch up with youse all later on.

sweet, awesome work Peta Hopefully he pulls through and mentions it :1peek:
Red, ohh sorry ... I knew i forgot someone :1peek:
We'll get together at Panthers on Saturday morning and discuss as a group which way we want to go, Highway or Bells Line.
After all, we dont have to be there any particular time. Even if we head out to Bells its only 30 minutes (if that) from Penrith to the start of Bells Line, so its not going to throw us out that much.
If its only drizzling or light yeah ok, but if its fairly heavy though forget it. But we'll see once we all meet up :1peek:
Dont forget to bring your permanant markers for writing of messages, and your camera for taking of photos!
Fatas, maybe we should ask all attendee's to put in $2 for a black ribbon and we (as in LS1) can donate the money to the Peter Brock Foundation. I believe they'll be setup on the day and their a worthy charity.
Anyway attendance list so far ...

a tad off topic but we had the cruise "plugged" during Jonesy and Amanda on WSFM this morning just after the 8am news this morning.
It wasnt much, just a mention that theres a Brock memorial cruise on leaving Penrith Panthers carpark at 10:30 headed for Bells Line of Road to Bathurst.

I wanted to use channel 05 in simplex mode, but I believe its set as an emergency channel?
Probably end up using something stupid like usual, we usually run Channel 17 or 18.

Hard to believe still exactly 12 months ago I was getting ready to get off a train listening to the same song on my ipod that I'm listening too, headed to work for what was just another Friday. Whats strange is the weather was the same too, looked like threatening rain but it held off.
12 months on I'm now getting ready to head to the Mountain.
If he's taught me one thing its to just "give it a red hot go" and alot of good has happened for me the past 12 months since taking on the Brock philosophy.
Thanks for the memories Brocky.

He has just left Wollongong meeting point with 6 confirmed car and they have possibly been joined by a 7th.
The weather has taken a change hasnt it :1peek:
When I woke up it was sunny and looking good, now tis a tad wet.
WE WILL BE GOING DESPITE WEATHER but everyone is reminded to take it extra careful in the wet. The Wollongong guys are just taking it easy as we speak.
We will decide whether to go Bells line or Highway at the meeting point.

well at the last min., i packed up the missus and kids into the fraud and we headed off.. after a late start and a couple of hitches along the way (little miss doesnt travel well, and swmbo gave the kids maccas for brekky :/ ), we made it to the mount..
felt kind of strange to be one of only a few fords up top (green ef with tints), but we enjoyed it anyway. sorry if i was being a snob, apart from my usual introverted attitude, i was a bit caught up in the emotion of it all. felt a lump rising as i was coming out of the cutting at a lesuirely 40km and the boys in the 'wepoon' vl blasted by.. despite being a tad naughty (and getting pinged), damn it sounded good going by.
late model gear looked great cruising the mount, i didnt really get any shots of the cruise convoy myself. all in all a great day (weather was a little so-so).
RIP Brocky, always The King of The Mountain
PS: i was the 'large lad' in the holden polo with glasses and scruffy hair, trailing a short missus and two kids around.

I had a fun day. Even got to visit the Lithgow kart track where I was supposed to be racing this weekend and saw a little action while the other guys were at maccas & getting fuel. We thought we dropped back a lot between Katoomba and Lithgow, but we came around a bend and found the convoy just ahead of us. Had about 6 laps of the mountain. Only the second time I'd been there. Got to see some very nice cars!
Shame that the highway patrol detracted from the day by booking one of our members - though not speeding related.
Had a van go past us on the way home after attempting to overtake and having no power up the hills. Cops got him straight away. He was tailgating me prior to that so I had a good laugh.
Here are the shots I got on my 2MP K750i Camera. Sorry if they're a bit large, only my second time posting photos on the forum.

interesting to see a number of people just sitting at McPhillamy Park obviously thinking and contemplating.
when I walked to the Holden wall at the top of the mountain, it was clean.......I don't think the cops hanging around would have been too impressed by anyone writing on the walls.
anyway, it was good to visit again, and I found a new way to get back to canberra (via crookwell and goulburn). reasonably quick, except for the dirt sections.
