so i just hit a small dip in the road when i was driving (not speeding) and the wire cable that holds the spare wheel in place decided to snap didnt it..
so the wheel falls down and digs into the road and launched the whole back end of the car into the air! not cool especially when the ute is so low..
bit of damage under the car, and to the bumper..and the wheel is a write off..
guess im just wanting to have a whinge and ask if this has this happened to anyone else? i would have thought the setup to be a little stronger??
cheers.

man, you did a bunny hop in your ute... that's extreme mate!!!
lucky you weren't going much quicker by the sounds of it.

i had the same thing happen to me mate...
a big bump in the road hit at about 120kph and as the car bottomed out the spare hit the deck... but unlike yours my car stripped the gears in the winch and just pulled it down till it was banging under the car. as the tyre hit the ground it pulled backwards towards the rear and yeahp...
i now no londer keep the spare under the car and have pulled the winch out for good... i'm just glad i wasn't as unlucky as you!!!

Mental note to self:
Check my spare wheel winch and chain when I take the spares off the rear axles. Maybe I should make up a drop cage to hold it in place.

You know, i've often thought about what would happen if the tyre did ever hit the ground, and i figured it would probably dig and lift the ass off the ground.
My car isnt really that low in the ass end either and because of the tow bar i cant get to my spare without lifting the car up with a jack.
I would probably be worried about possibly bending the chassis too.

I've thought the EXACT same thing before aswell. With the rear ride height of my ute there would be some serious damage.
To make me even more concerned, i have tightened the wheel up to buggery to stop it squeaking so there's even more stress on that cable.
hopefully the new ute will have a better designed spare wheel mounting system.

My cars too low to fit a spare underneath. i usually just throw a spare in the tray.

i have the same thing mungrel... it was when i chucked in the SSSL rear springs i realised the spare was no longer able to possibly live under the ute... there was no way of getting it out if i did get a flat. so it rides around in the tray now...
Toyota did a national recall on hilux's and landcruisers a few years back where all the cable type spare whinches were removed and replaced with chain type. toyota had realised that a lot of the cable type were breaking over time and dropping spares out on the ground.
i'm quite supprised that holden have continued to use the dodgey sounding winch thing...
