GUYS,
just wondering if its proposition to shorten an IRS rear end $$$ wise [ANEY THINGS POSABLE } i would like to fit some BIG wide rims under the back of the Ute ,how wide do you think you could go by just flaring the guards ??

No, you cannot shorted the IRS without spending megabucks on engineering and the actual modifications(budget over $10,000)
As you can only legally modify the track width by 15mm, then the rim could be around 10" wide with a 8.5" front rim. Tyres may rub a little on the inner guards and the wheel arch would need some work but it could be done. Also, it depends on how low you want the back of the ute to sit.

theres a VY ss ute with the plates TUBSHP i seen at supercruise 12. had massive dish on the back and looked awesome. i think chubby from sc forums knows him. maybe you could get in touch with him somehow.
he owns a workshop at nth richmond, nsw. shortened lower control arms and VS driveshafts if i remember correctly.

do you think that would work with mini-tubs on a clubsport?
cant see why not. im pretty sure his ute is still using the standard wheel tubs, with 10inch rims with a BIG offset.

Have a look through old copies of Street Machine mag and they had a pretty detailed story on doing this to that green and black VU SS Ute they gave away. Pretty complex job from memory, but definately not impossible!!

Thats the one, had 24's on the back......looked ridiculous imo!! Shame too, the overall concept of the ute was pretty cool i thought, except for the tractor rims.:spew:

Actually it's very cheap and easy to shorten a late model irs im actually suprised people havnt figured it out yet :hide: the vr-vs traling arms and axles bolt up to the late model rear ends but are approx 50mm per side shorter in track :) although you may need to modify the shockmount to suit a ute

Ditto what he said. -VRVS trailing arms will fit, just have to use the older style handbrake mech. Or even narrower VQ-VP ones.

Sorry to bring up a REALLY old thread guys but can anyone shed more light on this? I am currently talking to people, looking at options of tubbing my ute (I know you want to encourage me too) and its really massive dollars for a 4link and all the rest when I really just want to fit bigger dished rims, as in its not for drage racing etc. I know even with a 10.5 inch rim you can get a lot of dish so this is very very appealing to me if anyone can help?!!
Can anyone shed any light on whether this works for VE?
I thought the 4 link price was reasonable considering the work involved.

And yes it would look f___ing awesome!!

Thanks mate. So with that 4link kit what do I need on top of that? Tubs obviously, then axles, control arms etc
The below kit I think is a more complete kit with driveshaft etc. I'm on my mobile so can't post the direct link but use below and you'll see VE on the side. It's a bolt in 9" IRS setup for VE. The whole kit 4950 us.

Furthermore though do I really need all that? As you can see in the above people have modified the IRS for VU VY etc. I'm wondering if the same can be done for VE, if all I want to do is fit big wheels maybe it's more suitable?
Sorry for all the questions I'm pretty green in this area.

Well the IRS of the VT-VZ etc started off life in a much narrower car. Quite a lot of components are interchangeable.
VE never had that.. it was mostly clean sheet, so no you don't have that option.
You will need to stump up some coin if you want that dished look. That Pro9 kit doesn't actually include a diff.. so figure at least another 3-4K for something that will work. Plus actual installation, you get the picture.
The Gforce kit is probably the standard offset anyway, so you won't get your dished look.

Jesus. That sucks. I think it seems like I need to talk to a shop as no one appears to have an option for it. Can't imagine why, there MUST be a market for it!
Can anyone recommend a shop?

Can't you easily fit 10" rears on VE's with the right offset? Is half an inch going to make that much of a difference in the dish?

I've got 10's on my VF, so can't see why they won't fit on a VE. Easy to get a fair chunk of dish if you don't want to run decent brakes (most of the big dish rims won't clear brembos or HSV AP's due to spoke design).

Is why I skipped both of those on my new VF & went with the Harrops.

Probably not a huge market, I would say other than the odd show car all the tubbed cars are racing of some kind and they do it for performance not looks.
You wouldnt bother engineering it for absolute max of 10 cars. However is someone is willing to pay.. well blank cheque book goes a long way. Factor in the cost of 3 piece wheels as well in those size. Probably $5K with decent rubber.. so it is in reality a $20K exercise if you pay someone to do it.
As has been said the location of the brake caliper/rotor centreline is further out compared to the older girls make life hard for that dished look. Concave wheel patterns a required if you want to fit a decent brake package. You can fit a 370mm rotor and caliper under the right 19" VE wheel.
Take some measurements and fit a 10" wheel in, the old roll the guard trick and thats all you will get unless you get serious.

The Harrops probably cost twice or three times as much as I paid for my Brembo setup too :p
