Does anyone know if the auto in the VZ is different to previous models are they any good.. Has anyone blown one up yet or had major issues...
Or are they not to bad for a standard auto??
I mean it seems pretty smooth no complaints yet but just curious to here of any problems or positive feedback on them.. Are they american boxes.
the new vz autos are the 5 speed are they not? compared to the 4 spd in the previous models

Only in auto SV6s and alloytech Calais I believe (basically cars with the 195kW motor) - "base" VZs are/were still 4 speed.

I have a VZ auto in my VY. Only the selecter needed swapping over. Also needed calibrating to my tune. No issues so far... *touching wood*

The 4L60 was behind the SS until the 6.0L engine when they put in the stronger 4L65. Plenty of people have blown the 4L60, less the 4L65. Really depends how you drive and how much power you are making. Good transmission oil and an aftermarket trans cooler seems to help both of them with regard to longevity.

I'm glad someone put this thread up as I have a similar question.
I had a V6 VT auto and until I put the sports exhaust on, I couldn't
hear the damm thing changeing gear.
Once I could hear it going through the gears I found that it had 4 forward gears, then the overdrive.
No wonder it was so toey off the line, 1st is very low.
I have the 04 VZ SS 5.7 now in auto, does the box have the same set up?
Or just 3 forward gears, then overdrive.
Or, is it just 4 gears, no overdrive.
Would really appreciate some feedback on this.
On the 6, overdrive kicked in at around 75kmh.
What speed would overdrive,(if any) come in on the V8?
Thanks for your help on this.

It is not overdrive as such. What you are feeling is the 4 gears and then the torque converter lockup in fourth which feels like another gear engaging. You have 4 forward gears and one reverse :) Your 04 SS will have a 4L60 in it.
The torque converter lockup speed can be adjusted using the tuning software. Mine is set at 84km/h in 4th only (high stall torque converters don't like constantly locking up at low speeds). If you think it is toey with 3.07 diff gears then wait until you try 3.9s and some more grunt through a high-stall.

Thanks Vulture,
So what you are saying is that the V6 box is the same as the V8 box?
What speed is the torque converter lockup set for standard in the V8?
I don't believe I have felt it in this car (V8) yet.
The V6 used to go into it at around 75 kmh.
I'm getting a tune done after the cold air goes in, so I'll get them to set
the torque converter lockup to a lower speed, if the box does that at all.
I asked someone else a while ago, they reckon the lockup in the V8 comes in at 110kph, not very practical if this is true.
Thanks again for you help.

AFAIK, the V6 box other than the 190kw VZ (which was a 5 speed) was a 4 speed 4L60 just like in the V8s. I don't know what the TC lockup speed is stock but it would be much lower than 110km/h - much lower. Probably 50-60km/h but my understanding is that it varies with a number of things like load, throttle position, cruise control on or off etc, not just speed. Setting the lockup at a lower speed might improve fuel economy to a point but the converter will burnout its clutches as it is constantly locking and unlocking. If anything, you would raise the speed as you'll find it is much lower than even my 84km/h in stock form.

Thanks for all the replys and comments...
So the auto is designed for 250kw..(I hope) and if I got the 5 base mods taking me to somewhere like 280-300fkw the auto would not be able to handle it??
It does seem fairly strong not that this is easy to recognise but it shifts well.

The box should be fine with just a tune and exhasut etc taking power out to above 300kw at the fly. There are many people doing thousands of KMs with these sorts of power levels. The tuner will increase line pressure which makes the shifts firmer, decreasing slip and hence friction and heat further increasing the life of the box (so the theory goes).

You're kidding! A 6.0L V8 has 3.07 diff gears behind it? Man thats farked I had an old falcon ute with 3.23 gears stock! Thats it Im goin down to Hart Transmissions...

I think you will find most VZ's have the 4L65-e in them.
yeh im pretty sure it does, it was among the last 100 vz's made, with the L98, but im pretty miffed about the diff gears tho.
