Hello all,
I have Advanti Stalker 17x8in fitted to my '02 VXII executive, with 235 45R17 97W Toyo Teo Plus tyres fitted.
I have:
- Factory control links on IRS
- Pedders lowered springs (unsure of model, 350mm HTG front and rear)
- Pedders Comfort Gas (w/VRD) front shocks and bushes (approx. 5000km old)
- Standard rear shocks and bushes (103,000km old)
I do not tow (no towbar) and rarely carry more than myself and a passenger. The car has never been crashed.
The thing handles like nothing I have been able to drive before it and goes like a shower of sh*t through tight twisties in the Adelaide hills - so I am really satisfied with the handling.
My problem: It munches tyres on the rear. I'm not talking 30 - 40,000 k's, I have got a best of 15,000 out of brand new ones on the rear.
When I first bought it, it wore the left rear through the belt on the inner edge, with 4mm of tread on the outside. So a pretty big difference. Yes camber related.
I have now had it aligned four times over 20,000 kays. Always "premium" alignment packages, from four different and reputable places. The first three times it drove well but the toe was still out on the front as it feathered the tread quickly. The fourth and current have got the front right, it has minimal feather and drives excellently.
Each time the rears have got better but still wear unevenly. Currently (as in I just went out and measured) there is a 1/2mm difference from inner to outer depth. Seems small but this is with about 1000kms since they were fitted. My last tyres went with 4mm depth difference from inner to outer. That makes the outside almost new and the inside completely shagged. The good thing is the rear left wore shockingly more than the right for 3 alignments and I think they have finally got it right.
I have been consistently told that I do not need a camber kit because the rear is not overly low and the control links can be adjusted within range. (I had a good friend and holden serviceman explain that the control links adjust the toe, which effectively counters the effect of slightly negative camber. He said it corrects the tyre wear beyond noticeable ill effects.)
I have been told once it could be due to squat under hard acceleration. I find it hard to believe it would cause bad wear because I have stiff springs and do not go flooring it at every intersection.
Opinions please! Should I have a camber kit? Is it due to squat? Can I minimise the squat? Am I STILL getting ripped off for anything anyone ever does for my car? Let me know!
