Thought it would be good to start a thread talking about our Qtr Mile experiences recently..
Sunday 9/9/07 saw a few of us Chev regulars head upto Heathcote for some
Test and Tune action..
So here were the results for the day by Name and car..
Guys please feel free to update your little area under your name discussing
your experience, times and any issues! ;) (just copy and paste)
Curtis VE-SS
Best 60Ft Time: 2.1066
Best ET: 13.6549
Best MPH: 107.7
Comments:
Getting the VE off the line with 20's running 38psi and axle tramp was not easy.. I actually did my best run with the ESP turned on?! Given the MPH, I know the car is capable of a much better ET. Also missed 3rd gear about 3 times.. Next mod is to consider the RipShift for the VE and research axle tramp. Clutch seemed to hold up pretty well.
Had some really good runs next to Mustanger in his GTS :)
This is how close across the line it was..

What are your mods Curtis? What are John's mods? What was John's best et and mph pass? (I guess he will post this soon). But car mods may be a good addtion to your template.
Thanks,
Alex

good effort, what launch methods did you use and what sort of clutch are you running?
once i sort my clutch out ill have to come to a few of these things :)

Ta mate..I was trying launching at different revs,Slipping the clutch, dumping the clutch etc...
Best was slipping the clutch on at around 3000 revs.
I have a Xtreme cushion button..

Best 60Ft Time: 2.07
Best ET: 12.1
Best MPH: 119
Mods: GenTT 3.46 diff gears, 2500 re-stalled stocker (stalls a bit higher), ET Radials, blah blah
Comments: Well I updated my install thread to tell the dramas I had but I ended up with basically one full pass and this was the end result. I babied it off the line and didnt stall it up to boost and launch coz I didnt want to break a dodgy driveshaft I have.
Ute felt tough and was losing fuel top end because I need to put the fuel system on and am maxing out the injectors. Had a bit of spin on the tyres too. If I stalled it right up, added some more fuel and timing I can feel there is a nice low 11 to be had. Got some good data and found a couple of problems. Im happy so far.
Was a top day out with great blokes and everyone did a great job at peddling their cars down the track. Was just Mustanger and I in the A4/A6's

John, yours seems to be down on a little bit of power as compared to Curtis ... what are Curtis' mods? Did the X-Force system improve power as compared to standard? Have you been to Chev's to check whether the computer has taken some power out (over time) as a result of the exhaust? It would be interesting to see if the car holds its power over time (few hundred kays) when no customised tune is applied ... it could go backwards ...

Hey Alex.. Not sure I understand the backwards power thing but anywayz.. ;)
I've got X-Force Headers and CATS, 2.5" PowerSound, CAI, CA Intake Mod, and Tune, + plenty of chevs dyno time.. all equates to 265Kw's @ rear. Stock it was 224..
cheers..

Well, if you look at the standard map (efilive) the pcm pulls timing with flow improvements ... therefore, without a tune and a 3" cat back you may end up loosing some power over time.
I always suspected that the CAI which have shown huge rwkw gains have this property. For example, I don’t believe it is possible for a CAI alone to produce 15rwkw ... i think this may be a result of the instant leaner mixture that is produced without time for the computer to relearn and adjust ... the computer would slowly pull this back and all you would be left with is less timing than before but some flow improvements. So, initially the dyno may read high but later it may come back as the computer retunes based on its standard strategy ... a tune may be needed ... Put it back on the dyno and see … I am probably wrong.
I would expect 106-107mph from a standard HSV auto. Obviously, yours should be even higher (109mph) ...
I hope that makes sense ...

owhhh .... I dont know what happened in 2001 ... it was just a guess from looking at the standard tune and results from simple mods like a cai on a dyno ...

The MAF sensor will be the one that picks up the change in the intake system at WOT in these situations. Yes you pull timing as air flow goes up but its not going to go up that much and im sure it was tuned with that in mind and logarithmic. Not just .80 g/cyl and then drop off all timing to 0deg. Sonny and Chev are not silly blokes. M6's are harder work, you dont just run the mph the forum says you should. Its hard work, practice etc. If changed my mph with launches many times. Also the IAT vs Spark tables are aggressive stock, the ECT vs Spark is aggressive too since its in the opterating range from sitting and pulling 1.5deg of timing, blah blah blah......
Relax. Was a fun day and the boys did great

No dont get me wrong ... thats good you guys went out and had a great day ... just chatting about the results ... no disrespect intended. I believe John's car is untuned ... I was talking about the standard tune not Sonny or Chevs work ...
The standard tune drops 2-3 degs of timing up high in the rev range after .80 g/cyl ... 2-3 deg equals about 10hp? or about 1 mile?

Ok fair enough. Dont forget the auto will be pulling torque reduction and the shift times will be slow too. Im wishing I put the logger on it now

Yeah that would have been great!!! That would show how to make the most of the standard tune (or what goes wrong and improvements required). Good thinking ...

Yeah, my car is still untuned . Some mods will be happening soon, but as you can see the times were very consistant. This will be a good base to work from.........Cheers John

What did the car make atw before/after the exhaust John? It would be interesting to see if it still retains its power before you add more gear/tune it ...

And you have the CAI John as well.. so thats going to help with the job.. Keep in mind the Torque management on the VE and once that is tweaked is definately where some gains are with MPH.
The thing that amazed me with my best run is that I did it with the ESP on..credit to Holden for getting this right.. without it I would break out in wheels spin and axle tramp.. although i'd much rather have it turned off. What I do think is that if we changed the rear suspension setup, whacked on some drag rims and tyres that we would see considerable drops in times and even better MPH.. but hey its my daily driver and I know that bang for buck with these mods that it feels awsome on the road and track. :)
I'm sure in the not too distant future Chev will be organising another test and tune day and we can get a good size crew to head up ;)

In the afternoon at 21C. Full weight car running 19" SSV rims and factory rubber on rear. Hit the limiter in 2nd which robbed some time. With that fixed and in the much cooler air at night hoped to get into the 13.0s or even high 12.9s if everything came together but most people's evening times were higher - less traction??? Almost all afternoon runs were within a few hundredths of 13.20.
A fun day and thank you to all who helped out!

Great job Gary and Tuff. The trophy sure looked fantastic. Was a grouse day at the LS1 nationals. We meet some new forum members and caught up with some "old" mates as well. Look forward to our own test and tune day in the not so distant future. Thanks all those who gave Wonky a hand in preparing the VE
