Went for as ride up in the Gorge (Adelaide Hills) on Saturday only to be defected for my rear mudgaurd being to short.. Like what The :flipoff:
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa24/onemanempire/reargard.jpg
I had a huge spit at this cop. Like revenue raising at it's best.
It just gets better and better. He then asks me if the sidestand kill switch works and tells me to get on it, fire it up and put in gear while the stand is down.
Then gives me a ticket for having my rego disc on the wrong side of the plate.
I argued that the plate is not obstructed, and he tells me that I may use it to conceal the plate. I said to him that this machine "may" also do 285 kays an hour, so would you like to also fine me for that to? :vpo:
Now i need to replace the whole under tray and get it down to regency park to have the defect removed, as he refused to let it go through a cop shop. :flipoff:
When booking it in on the phone the woman tells me it will cost 138 bucks!
FFS, this is not funny anymore. I didn't cut the thing off.
Fully not happy with the attitude of these bike cops.
And no, it wasn't just me, they had a blitz on, if it had two wheels, then you were pulled over for a license check. I hadn't even stopped and he started picking on the bike. It's in pristine condition totally unmodified other than that...
So I ring all the local bike wreckers today and they all tell me the same thing. They've had a run on them as of late and no one (i rang) had one that was uncut. Ended up getting one in Sydney for $75.
Geez, where's all this going to end?

That sucks mate. The cop sounds like your average constable plod wanker.
I can understand defecting bikes for worn tread or obvious unsafe things but the mud guard fine sounds over the top especially if you bought the bike like that.
Unfortunately it sounds like a case of backchatting getting you picked on further.
Try not to worry though. I like to think what goes around comes around.

wow, they came down on you a bit didnt they...i mean a mudguard? And the rego on the wrong side? Sounds like he had a ticket quota to meet.

Damn sounds a bit unreasonable really.
On a similar matter, the cops have been pinging everyone over here too. (cars mainly though)
Good time to be off the road.

No offence though, but it also sounds like you failed the famous "attidude test" which probably made is worse for yourself. :1peek:

Have to agree. Although it's not all bad. I was pulled over by an unmarked car recently after being a little naughty and the officer was the most reasonable gent one could ever have chance to meet. He could have thrown the book and then some at me for what I had done but he chose not to and made a judgement that in the situation it wasn't a hanging (or car-confiscating) offence. Completely restored my faith in the boys in blue after some bad experiences where a decent attitude on my part made no difference. Don't get me wrong, I don't think a good cop is necessarily one who "let's you off" but I think a good cop is one who takes all factors into account and makes a judgement about how hard to come down on someone.
Keep your chin up mate, there ARE some reasonable Police out there who are not into nit-picking offences. Reminds me of the famous "Unleaded Only" sticker scam that they were running a while back. They'd book you for not having the sticker on the tank of the motorcycle. A bit rough that.
The mudgaurd thing will be an ADR requirement but we all like to shorten them as the rear of the bike looks sexier. The only negative thing about it is that your back gets wet if the road is wet. A shorter guard doesn't stop stones being thrown back as sportsbikes will do that (due to sticky tyres) unless the gaurd was touching the road.
Do you have to have your rego on one side? AFAIK in QLD it can be on the left of the bike or rear, under the plate as long as in full view all is good.

And cops wonder why everyone hates them ... surely they have better things to do than this sort of shit.
I know there are good cops out there and they don't have an easy job, but defecting someone for that sort of trivial crap is just ridiculous.

Shame you've already spent the $75 bucks, as there's an easy way to get it passed just modding what you have there for 10 mins, then changing it back as soon as you get home...
All you need is some stiff flat black plastic, just cut it to the width of the mudguard that is there, then bolt the "strip" under the plate and cut to the appropriate length...
Remove the plate and the "strip" when you get home and then your back to the minimal rear end with the defect cleared for a few bucks
Wow... unlucky dude, that is a bit tough.
No offence though, but it also sounds like you failed the famous "attitude test" which probably made is worse for yourself. :1peek:
I think you're right there too! I've never had anything but a friendly chat when i've been pulled over on a bike. Out of all my mates only one of us has ever gotten a ticket and that was due to a wheelstand (and even that was less that it could have been).
We're always friendly and polite, one officer even said he knew we we're over 110, but as we weren't trying to set any land speed records and we looked well in control of roadworthy bikes he didnt care too much.

Sorry to here about that.
glad i wasnt up there on my bike they would have crusified mine. and m ine is in mint condition, just a tad loud due to full race exhaust.
I have looked into the rear mud guard thing and aparently there is a gap requirement between wheel and stuff. thats why some of the later r1/r6 have that little tail bit hanging down with the reflector on it.
You should come out on the 23rd of september this month there is a group of riders doing a ride up the river etc raising money for a better cause the lukemia foundation.

mate thats pretty tough I fel for you I heard there was a blitz on on the weekend, regency must be catching up on their back log:rofl: Obviously you had a pretty roadroathy bike for them to have to pick on that.
Unfortunatly us bike riders do tend to bring it upon ourselves a bit in regards to the reason the cops have rego checks as there are alot of bike riders out there that either have no bike licence or ride around with no rego.

I just read an article on another forum of a guy who got hit from behind by a car after overtaking it, couple years back here in the hills.
Cops booked him for failing to keep control, even though people saw it and told the copper, yet they didnt seem to care.
Makes you wonder.

Aside from the defect, isnt that spot in the hills where everyone rides the arse off their bikes?? Im sure there has been some accidents & fatalities as well. Why go where every wanna be rider goes??? Its like Macquarie pass near me, every tool with a bike licence fangs up & down there, then they start going under trucks & getting killed, then the police have to show they are doing something about it & now its been wrecked for every one. If defecting you for small things is going to stop people going there & getting killed, then what else is going to work??? Dont be a sheep, find another not so used road for a blast.
OneManEmpire
11-09-2007, 06:32 PM
Yep, the "boys" do cut laps back and forth through there, and yes, many a rider has died..
However, the sheep comment has no weight in my case.
That road or the Chain of Ponds road or the freeway are your only choices to get from where I live to where I ride. So what are YOU suggesting?
I chuck it on the trailer and take it there, then go for a ride?
Wake up fella.
I'd cop it on the chin had I been at fault in anyway shape or form, IE, speeding, doing rollers or wheelies or even stoppies. Fact is I was just there, the same as the others who also succumbed to the same fate.
Think about it. Maybe if you lived here you'd understand the situation.
Maybe you did live here, and if so, should know beeter than to call me a sheep.
/RANT
Another interesting thing to note is that to get a vehicle inspected that you've purchased from interstate and intend to register here in SA costs $25. So why does having a defect removed cost $138?
:vpo:
Thanks for the tip about the plastic bolted to the bottom of the plate to man.
I just didn't want to take the chance of getting knocked back on a technicallity and thus forgoing another $138 and how ever long it is before the bike can be re-inspected.
Bottom line is, it's just revenue raising. PERIOD.
cheers

Empy, is the Gorge Road the old Devils Elbow running to
Eagle on the Hill, where the freeway used to run to Mt Barker etc?
Just trying to work out where it is and remember by father inlaw
saying a lot of bikes use that old road now that it is quiet.
Only moved back here 4 months ago after being away for nearly
18 years, so not really up to scratch where things are :)

The Gorge goes up Birdwood way.
The old freeway up Eagle on the hill is good but its always covered in debris from tree's etc :S
On Saturday I went up through Belair, coromandle valley, Cherry Gardens, Stirling, Norton Sumit and then home.... Its a good ride and doesnt seem to attract as many riders..... Or cops
EDIT: They are starting to get a little pathetic when they are defecting a bike for that 'mod' !

What a ****ing pack of wankers. If the Police put as much effort into road safety as they did picking on crap like this during 'motorbike week' (then again its motorbike week every week isn't it) the road toll would be half as much as it is.

Martin, your comments do not surprise me or my family,

I think you will find there is a reflector on the part that has been chopped off.... ie it is illegal to just chop it off ;)

Well thanks for the comments.
Yeah, the "eagle" run is a bit disturbing at times. I had a "moment" on there a few years ago.
It twas a nice day... fanging along heading up and cranking into a left hander I spot this rock a nanosecond before I hit it, the size of a fist. :eyes:
Nothing to do except run over it, as trying to avoid it and unsettling a bike that's leaned over that far would not be good for my health. (Running wide I suspect...
Front wheel lifts off the ground... foot goes down expecting the front to washout when it hit the road again... and nothing. Just kept on going as if it never happened,
I dare say tho, all the people that live on eagle on the hill heard my arse snap shut. I parked at the carpark for a ciggie and had a look at the mark on the tyre, the dust from this rock was even on my rim!
Not only are the residents shitty at blokes like me doing laps, there's also cute fluffly koalas that share the road with you... not a good outcome there.
And the road is usually always dirty as someone has already mentioned.
I don't use it on the bike anymore.
My favorite run used to be:
lobie, harndorf, kuipto forrest, myponga, delamere, victor, goolwa, Bull creek,
ashborne, meadows... ending back up at lobie. 3 tanks of juice and one hell of a good time. These days now that I'm almost a senior citizen :bawl:
I just putt up the Gorge then onto Lobie, talk shit to the other lads over coffee, then head back home again.
I had the new undertray fitted today (Thanks GS From Pitmans).
So the bill so far:
$89 fine for having rego disk on the number side of the plate...
$85 for the undertray
$80 to have it fitted
$100 for super corsas (race take offs)
$30 to fit tyres
$138 to have it inspected...
Off to regency Friday Morn to clear the sticker...
Would a been easier to have just slept in last weekend...
cheers

Hiya Mitch! That's fuc#in unlucky dude! So all you have to do is replace the rear guard, and he's sending you to Regency for that??!! Sounds like he didn't get a blowy from his misses or he rolled over and she told him to p!ss off! Ha!! And the Police hiraqy wonder why the public/police relations is sliding downhill! Cops with attitudes have no friends, hence why they are such pricks!

They were all bike cops. About 8 or 10 of them.
I'm not to worried about knowing why. Just annoys me that it's such a headache to get fixed.
It's all done now and it's hopefully a memory.

Nice ride gareth. looks the goods bet it goes well.
My understanding is that there is a required distance between wheel and undertray etc to meet ADR. Hence why the bike manufacturers put that reflector on a bit of plastic reducing the gap.
Early model R6's had a 2 part rear with the reflector on it up to 2001 then they changed it.

.
pretty close from what i understand
yr number plate (and light)
AND reflector assembly have to be so far off the ground
...something like 70cm MAX off the ground
no reflector or a moved number plate has the plod

Similar to the problems up at the Old Pacific Highway on the Central Coast. Just before Christmas there were 2 bike fatals in 2 weeks and a kid had to be airlifted out after a head on into one of his drifting mates. Up from the usual 1 fatal every 4 to 5 months. The RTA have re tarred the 'fun' corners and doubled the armco so you can't slide under it but people still keep coming off. Mind you the new tar makes you want to have a bit of a go! End result is the road gets smashed by the cops to make the riders go elsewhere and Max's cafe is a little quieter on weekends. I heard one say "You guys need to realise you're not as good as you think you are. If you were we wouldn't have to come up here and scrape you off the road every weekend."
I was up there the other week and a bloke on an R6 was chased into the cafe carpark, lights sirens etc. Very dramatic. Turned out he couldn't hear the cops behind him when he was doing 180kmh!

My Virago has a kill switch also. :eyes:
If the bike is running and in gear with clutch in, as soon as the stand goes down it cuts the engine. Also it wont start with it down and in gear clutch in.
