Hi All
well i just read about how they are making the opening round in 2008 at Quatar under lights.
They claim they will used 3700 lights. 3200 over head and 500 for the surface.
Will make for a very different race im sure. cant wait.

Isn't the point of a night race; that it is dark!!!
With that many lights it may as well be a day race.

The main reasoning behind having the night race is so that the event can be broadcast live to europe at a suitable time. That and the heat of Qatar in the daytime. The race isn't aimed at being a 'night' race as such that the motorbikes have to use their headlights to for lighting around the track.

I had read about it last year when 3 of the riders (including Rossi) tried it out for a few laps at night. They said that it would a lot more light as they had only placed them at the corners and the riders couldn't distinguish braking markers etc all that well in the unlighted parts. The lights they had on the bikes were like those used in the Suzuka 8 hour in that they pointed into the corners but didn't give much illumination on the straights.
I'm surprised it's been agreed to as there were more drawbacks than positives safety wise. Should be interesting. Much more pleasant riding there at night I'd guess.

The heat of 3000 odd lights wont be far off it lol

An 8 hour MotoGP race - now there's an idea. Maybe not in the desert at Qatar though.
Phillip Island??? Yep!!
