Forum,

A colleague at work has the local Holden dealer "solicit" that the "fuel injection system" needed/required servicing on his Astra. (The Vectra had been serviced earlier)

On the invoice, there is a statement stating that the fuel injection service be carried out every two years.

Does anyone know if this is an "essential" requirement of servicing from Opel/Holden or is it a dealer undertaking unnecessary work (and expensive work) on an engine system?

Sounds like the dealer just wants to score a bit of extra $$$$ by saying this needs doing. My car has got 190,000km on it, and has never had the fuel injectors touched, and it still runs perfectly, smooth idle, plenty of power and easily gets 450 to 500km around town, from the 59 litre tank I have. The key is using premium unleaded fuel, which I have done for almost 90,000km since purchasing the car.

As far as I know, as a general rule fuel injectors don't need to be serviced, UNLESS you are suffering from poor performance, poor idling, and high fuel consumption. Even running regular unleaded I wouldn't expect any of the above issues to show before covering 100,000km. If the injectors do actually require cleaning or servicing, I would be getting a professional company that specialises in that work to do the job, as they will actually take them out and service or clean them, as opposed to just running a cleaning fluid through the fuel lines.

My old TS Astra had the 'injector servicing' stunt from a dealer once - I don't think it needed it because it did almost exclusively freeway km and it didn't seem to run any better or more economically after it was done.

I certainly don't remember ever seeing it on the service schedule in the owner's manual...
