About 12pm yesterday while my wife was in Sydney and i was back here in canberra, Fiona and the kids were invloved in an Accident. Scared the crap out of me, worst few minutes of my life till i new they were fine, Fiona had actually just dialled me on her phone, she has a car kit but took her eyes of the road to check the screen...the end result a pretty nasty smash. I answered the phone to hear mayhem and panic. Kids screeming, wife very upset and me not having any idea what had happended. Took a few mins to get though to her and find out, then a quick trip to sydney! Everyone is sore but ok, fiona has pretty nasty burns on her arms from the airbag which went off plus a nice seatbelt mark, both kids were in there seats and have some small seatbelt marks, the car im not sure about, i think they will fix it but we will have to see. The following show how just a small lack of concentration can cause big problems!!!

Very glad that nobody was really hurt and appreciate the reasons for you posting it. Just don't know that it is a good idea to put in writing on the net that your wife was on the phone, hands free kit or not. You never know what the insurance companies will do to get out of a payout....... :(

OUCH!!! :1peek:

Glad to hear everyone is OK... I take it the driver in the other car is ok too?

Must have been a big impact to have the airbags go off... they're not supposed to trigger unless the impact is big enough to be life threatening.

Glad to hear everyone is ok. However, I would call this a lack of "consideration"... taking your eyes off the road to engage in a phone call with kids in the car. Bit untidy mate.

Good to hear everyone is alright, can't imagine how horrible it must've been to hear it all over the phone and feel completely helpless.

Strange to see the seatbelt was damaged like that.

Think you need to read it again mate, i was not in the car. The fact of the phone has nothing to do with it, it was the fact that her eyes were off the road for a split second.
You have never had a lack of concentration driving, i would find that very, very hard to believe. You may have and so i have i and got away with it. This time she didn't and im showing the result. Do you think i don't feel crap about this, the fact that my family was hurt, Your comments like that are not appreciated.

the other driver was fine for those wondering

thinking the same, why i put that shot up, is that something to do with the seatbelt pretensioner or something???

I can't imagine the feeling you would have had in your stomach and heart.

Great to hear all is okay. Shows however, driving is for driving, concenration spent elsewhere is costly, and everything other than drving can and should merely wait...

Good luck with it all and cheers.

A few years ago the same sorta thing happened to me where my wife and kids were invovled in a car accident(other car turned against a red arrow)so i know the feeling only too well.Puts the wind right up you until you find out everyone is alright.

Accidents happen because of all sorts of shit going on,like waving to some one, lighting a smoke, looking elsewhere etc etc so don't be worrying too much what others will say with regard to you posting why it happened!

Don't be concerned about the car mate, just glad your loved ones are all ok.

Pretensioners fire with the airbag to pull you into the seat, reduce the amount that you move forward to keep you away from the wheel/dash and reduce chest injuries from the seatbelt if you hit them with force.

Very good to see everyone is ok.

had the setabelt break the same way in my VZ SV6,
just went to put the belt on and it broke. Fixed at service the next day.

Good to hear no one was seriously hurt, but I'd suggest getting the number plate out of that pic.

Shit Steve!!! That's no good at all. Glad to hear your Misses and kids are ok. Nothing worse in those few seconds when you heard mayhem over the phone and were helpless to do anything.

Dont worry I have had a small acco when not concentrating and so has emg, but he is right, when the kids are in the car we all need to be extra careful (easy to say in hindsight though). Main thing is everyone is alright.

Its good too hear none of your family are injured.
I've copped the airbag.
stung my arms real good and left welts.
I couldnt believe how hard they go off.The cabin filling with white powder and the smell.

Firstly, I'm very glad that all of your loved ones are okay, apart from the usual and normal shock.

This certainly highlights just how a minor failure to fully concentrate at the job at hand (driving) can lead to very serious (often fatal) consequences.

It is very fortunate that this did not occur on a high-speed (100kph) speed zone, or did not involve a pedestrian being struck.

Whilst many of us are often oblivious to the results of situations involving a minor/momentary lack of concentration, or distraction of a driver, this is one that clearly indicates we all need to concentrate 100% on driving.

Cheers and all the best for your missus and kids,

Macca

good to hear your wife and kids are ok.

I drove out to Gunghalin to get my car washed at Waves today.....this was after spending the morning doing some gardening, and waking up tired.

the number of mistakes I made on the trip to and from was ridiculous.....can happen to any of us.

Do you have kids mate ? This was plain and simple unlucky ... your judgment of parental skills is not really required.

Good to hear everyone was OK Steve, cars can be fixed.

Glad everyone is ok.This is the important part.
Don't worry about the repairs to the car (that's what we pay insurance for)
There is no way a human being can concentrate 100% on the road with kids in the car as the kids are normally the ones diverting our attention, fighting, screaming, laughing etc as every parent will know.
This was an accident nothing more.
Everone looks away from the front whether to look for oncoming traffic to the sides or look for street names, check speed on Speedo etc.
I work as a courier these days.
I need to read my data unit while driving to accept jobs as see where they are as do taxis.Talk on the radio, look for numbers of buildings, see signs which are distracting on their own (one way,no stopping, bus zone,no parking...the list goes on) How could you give 100% of concentration to the front?
Don't blame your wife dude she is only human.

Sorry to hear about it. Glad they were OK. Suppose it just shows how dangerous any phone is in the car - handsfree or not. The research shows that handsfree has no benefit for safety hence why some want any phone in the car banned.

Looks reparable?

To those that can't seem to get the reason i put this thread up and just have to say things that arnt helping. My wife is shattered that she put her kids in harms way by a small mistake, it still upsets her when she thinks about it. So yes, she made a mistake! Im not blaming her, im not upset with her. Put yourself in her place and think how you would feel. My point in this thread was to show just how careful you have to be while driving, not just while your kids are in the car as the time you have a moment you may hit someone elses car who has kids!

not a good situation Goanna but your wife, kids and other party were not hurt and that is the main thing. wether or not she was looking at the screen, radio, the kids, sneezing, someone walking their dog its iralevant. these things happen, its part of life. dont let your wife beat herself up over it too much.

In the public area anyone and everyone can read and make comment on threads, sometimes not called for negative comments.
At least in the private area only validated people can read and make comment which cuts the DH factor way down.

Oh I see the old validated v non validated bit again, what has this got to do with anything, geeze??? there are more than enough DH validated members on here also.

Glad to hear that the family is OK, I imagine it would have been pretty scary for all involved.

To put it even more simply. the identity of validated members has been confirmed by others.

By posting this thread in the public area is akin to shouting outside, anyone can hear it. In the private areas it is more like shouting inside where only known people can hear it.
While I agree there are DH validated members as well, at least they are known to be DH.. (that sounded good didn't it)

There can be repercussions from posting things anywhere, by limiting who can see it can only be a good thing.

Interesting comment.

When using the hands free, I keep calls a short as possible.
Seems strange that most can conduct a conversation with a passenger with relatively little loss of concentration.
Outside of the car... how common is it to see people pacing back and forth when talking on a mobile or portable. I guess the nature of pacing is pre occupation with something other than your current situation... semi alert.

Glad to see everyone is OK (relatively).
Ignore the purely negative commments from others (be they Val or non-Val).

Interesting to hear about the arm injuries form the airbags. It would seem that the "1/4 to 3" hand position on the wheel is essential to minimise airbag injuries.

Also interesting to see both bags go off in what looks like an oblique impact. Last year I witnessed (almost taken out!) an accident at highway speed, where the vehicle impacted an earth bank obliquely, and only one of the front bags deployed. Both front passengers walked away relativelky unscathed.

In the commodores both front airbags are set to go off. You can not have either the driver or passenger airbag fire by itself, both will activate. Side airbags however will only go off for an impact on that side.

There has been talk about only firing an airbag IF someone is in that seat, but I don't recall if that has been configured yet for the commodores.

That's right. Talking with a passenger in the car is less distracting than talking on a mobile phone. I think it not clearly understood why this is the case.

If you've ever been the driver (without a passenger) in a car with kids, your concentration is being put to the test constantly. Lack of "consideration"? What the?

It must be hard being perfect and judgemental like yourself, having never used a mobile whilst driving and having never taken your eyes off the road for a split second.

Glad everyone's OK Goanna. A big squeezy hug for your missus from me.

Glad the Wife and Kids are okay mate, Just a Freak accident IMO, could have been CD player or even adjusting a rear mirror.... just a lapse in judgment, i am sure she will be a better driver for it.

Any idea on what your going to replace it with ?
