Hey Guys!!
I thought i would start this thread to see if anybody else has a car similar to mine. I've purchased an Ex NSW Cop VY SS sedan 03 model. Apparrantly they sell them around 50,000 and i am the 2nd owner since ex-cop use.
It doesn't have traction control. I test drove an 02 model vy ss and i am sure that it had it. Was it an option from HOLDEN or did the NSW police get a special make?? I've tried to research as much as i can but havn't found much info relating to the details of the car.
Its got the usual holes where the cages would be, scratches on boot lid where guns would have been kept (no carpet), and a small scratch where the lights were mounted on roof and a hole for radio use near steering wheel.
Can anyone give me any info relating to my car? Or any stories that they know of relating to ex-cop cars??

Im not sure on the vy's but my old vt ex cop car was auto without traction control. From what i can gather the ex cop cars may not have traction control fitted to them at all.

What is it you want to know?
TC was fitted in the VZ range but not VY (In my experience)

the scratches on the inside of the boot lid are not from where the guns were kept but from where the spike stripe (STOP STICKS) are kept

The VY SS came with traction control, but the Police VY SS did not have traction control.

NSW police dont use Traction Control on HWP cars as they like to be in total control of the car at all times, TC and ESP and the rest hinder their skills to control the car. I suppose if they are never to use it and Holden makes it cheaper not to include it then why have the option!
By asking for peoples opinion on ex cop cars youve opened up a can of worms, you'll now be attacked by all the horror stories and people in general screaming "dont do it".
My current car is an ex NSW police unmarked car and apart from a few holes (which will only cost $50 and about an hour worth of effort to replace the trim) I am yet to have any problems with it. Its acctually been good to me, the holes are in the boot for the CB antenna, the holes were in the boot for my fire extinguisher, the holes on the dash matched up to my CB perfectly and shes running a bigger alternator and battery :1peek:
My previous car was a VX with FE2 and it didnt handle as nicely as this one. Its the nicest example of a VZ Ive driven which is why I had to buy it the day I found it on the lot!
As with all cars some can be a lemon, problem is when its an ex cop alot of people (especially around here) point the blame on its previous life in service, rather then admit that other people have problems with their cars from brand new day one, but like cars in general most are quite good.
Assuming the other owner upgraded or sold it because of the price of petrol and not because of a mechanical issue you would have a very nice car there.
If it means anything my next car will be an EX HWP SS as well if my current V6 is anything to go by :)

The car is an Auto.
The gentleman i purchased the car worked at the mines out in WA and had no use for the car. He knew a guy that i graduated uni with and i called him to verify. My uni mate said that he was a decent guy and he was working over at the mines. I did a revs and mechanic check (not RACQ). I beleive that i have purchased a nice car.
I got it checked over by my mechanic and he informed me it had had a tough life, but for the price i was paying it would still be a good option to consider buying it. A cracked engine mount and hole in exhaust were the only two major things the mechanic informed me. I had planned to change the entire exhaust as i had budgeted for a larger loan. Engine mounts were not massive for me to change.
I guess i could be overwhelmed with people saying what a mistake i made by buying a car.
But i am sure there would be people putting comments into a forum labled "What's gone wrong with my brand new LS1?"
Cars are meant to have problems....if they didn't there would be no mechanics!

I had a vn ss ex chaser when i was around your age for a really good price. Couldn't stretch the budget for a private one at the time. Good value for money ex chasers...
I did not have too many problems apart from some suspension problem. Abit of luck I guess. But congrats on your chase. Sounds like a good car.

Hi mate
I have an Ex HWP Vy SS
I Can't tell you how happy i am with the car.
No, it doesnt come with TC
Don't listen to the myths about them all being belted, at the end of the day, no one buys an SS to baby the thing, and its not like they are doing burnouts in them.
Had to change my clutch around 55,000 km, and thats all i have had any problems with.
By the way it was an under cover car, not marked.
Any other questions feel free.

I have a VX ex chaser and I havn't had any issues. It's weird that you say there are holes in your car for cop stuff but my car has none of that. I was told that they replaced the trim and everything in the car when they sell them on.
It's funny that you only hear people who don't own ex-cop cars saying don't buy them, they been thrashed etc... but I have yet to hear a negative story from anyone who actually owns one. If the chance came up for me to upgrade to another later model cop car I'd do it in a second.
Let all the other suckers buy their used cars for $5000 or so more that were probably thrashed to crap by people who aren't held responsible with tax payer funded vehicles.

at least you can be confident it was always serviced and repairs were carried out if they were required :)
and yes I have to agree, the number of ex police car experts that patrol this forum without ever acctually owning one are amazing :vpo:
Dont forget while people belt on about "cops thrashing cars" theres 2 things to consider here. 1 is that while its truer for Executive models because their GD cars and always on the run, HWP cars arent always running. Theit also often fully marked (yours would have been) which means when out in public they have to be sedate and be showing a good example. 2 is that the engines are broken in the proper way. I cant get a car and legally thrash it early in its life because I'd get done for hooning or speeding or something. HWP cars can be and you'll find the engine is alot free-er for starters.
Anyway its you car, your choice. If you think your getting a good deal then stick with it. When I brought mine I was oblivious to the previous owner. It drove so beautifully on the test drive, it past an inspection, and it wasnt till I got home and looked at the service book I read who the first owner was.
Ive done almost 10 000 kays in it since getting it and havent had one problem yet :smilesandbanana:
That said my previous car (the VX) had the same sort of milage on it when I brought it and it didnt even last 10 000 kays before falling apart yet it was always a "privately owned car".
I was told that they replaced the trim and everything in the car when they sell them on. you wouldve been lucky.
Mine only has
2x holes in the little area under the push down compartment under the radio, but I filled one hole with a switch so thats fixed that
4x holes on the passenger side trim that runs between the glovebox and radio. If I can find a suitable phone mounting kit I'd cover this bit anyway.
2x holes on the rear air vent surround, but I rarely have anyone in the back and those that climb in the back already know the history of the car and know I couldnt be stuffed paying to get a new bit.
2x holes on the tunnel floor at the rear where the MDT has been mounted.
All up only around $100 if that for replacement trims but as a driver I dont see it and my passengers all know the history. I also had to remove some goo from where one of the mobile phone antennas was mounted because I had another antenna to mount there, and the rear window has a bit cut out for mounting a second antenna which suits be fine because I will eventually have 1x mobile antenna and 1x UHF antenna for the CB thats shaped like a mobile phone antenna!

The holes present in your vehicle are basicly the same in mine. And my opinion on them is identical. Why bother changing them? They do not stick out like dogs balls and the people that get in my car are familiar of its history and are usually envious of it and give me compliments. I have only owned the car for 7 months but from this experience i wojld most definately consider purchasing another ex HWP.
Has anyone purchased 1 directly from the police?
I was the 2nd owner for mine as was Y2kGoofball. I'm assuming that they are sold under auction. I am from QLD and my car was purchased through NSW. I havn't checked where ex QLD police cars are sold.

I tried to chase one up last year through a member I knew who worked in the ideal situation - quiet country station where he was the only guy to drive the car from brand new so I knew all its little issues it had its whole life and new the cars history from 7km.
But it got lost in the fleet side of things. They decommissioned it and accidently sent it off for auction. I tried to follow it through the auction because for others it was a case of buying a "ex cop car" but for me it was a case of buying "a mates car" and as long as bidding didnt go nuts I'd be fine but I lost it.
Strange how things worked out though, i found this one at a Holden dealership, had a full Holden whatever its called inspection, full service history and as it turns out had a life similar to the one I had my eyes on anyway!
Its good to read everyones positive comments though, theres always many quick to criticise and whinge yet I talk to so many ex police car owners who are happy with their beast! As I said, I'd be in for it again. Took it for a 700km run today (on holidays) and couldnt believe how it glided over bumps that my old VX would transmit through the steering wheel.
Perhaps it was setup suspension wide for country work, perhaps my mind and perception is clouded over and ... whatever the case it was a comfortable trip on some pretty rough roads today!
