View Full Version : VR GTS Offered to me. Cheap?
Hi,
This is my first post that actually counts, so bear with me.
I have just had a VR GTS 215 Manual offered to me for 15k. It's 02/05 model, Genuine 103000k's very original, unmodified, books, elderly owner, never been flogged. No real options to speak of. I have driven the car, it feels like new, very tight in the body, smooth with no rattles or squeaks. Definatley one of the better cars of this era that I have looked at.
There seems to be heaps of these for sale, with not many of them selling.I initially thought that 15k was cheap for this car, but now I am not so sure. The car would be a daily driver.
Any Thoughts?

The interior looks in incredible condition fromo the small amount I can see. Would I buy it? Probably, but I'd do it up!!
Front outside needs a respray but it all looks very straight.
I still struggle with the Pre VT2 GTS's only having Air Con!!
Still very tempting though...
I have always wanted one of these, especially in sherbrooke green
if it suits your purposes go for it

Looks incredible but its a real shame you want to turn it into a daily driver...this thing needs to be locked up in storage and brought out on the sunniest Sundays only. Love it.

Looks nice and if it is unmolested, yeah... why not buy it.
I had the opportunity to buy a VSII GTS back in 2001 but chose not to because of insurance costs. I was moving up from a VK 5.0L and was very impressed by the torque and feel of the car.
Oh well, Coulda, woulda, shoulda:bawl:
Seedyrom, thanks for posting the pics!
Yep, the interior is in excellent condition, it's a bloody great car. I'm not exactly sure why i am procrastinating. I guess I just don't want to do my nuts on yet another car.
Caprice270, I do struggle with the notion of it being my daily driver, as I would hate for a car like that to go backwards in condition. Although, I would not clock up too many k's driving to work as it's only a 5k round trip.

If you're wanting a level headed answer on whether you should or shouldn't, you're asking the wrong bunch of guys. :)
DO IT!!!!!!! :D
I cant believe its in that condition seeing as though it gets driven on dirt!

Check out AAMI with their Flexi Premiums (I think a few Insurers do it now).
If you are a sensible driver, the extra cost of the Excess should not bother you.
Just got my Renewal for mine from AAMI. $462 with additional excess of $1550.
Makes sense, but make sure the car is secure from Theft etc. My house is a fortress, so if they get mine, I have bigger problems.
Should you get the car.............YES!!

That insurance is just ridiculous I agree try somebody else. That car is in fantastic condition and I agree with everybody here in saying buy it! 5k to work I would get a pushbike for crying out loud! I cycle 20km (return) everyday so that my clubby doesn't have to be parked in the street and sit in peak hour traffic everyday!

Give CGU a call for your insurance, they are $1000 cheaper than RACV for my next car, with a better policy, and lower excess too!

Mate that is a awesome buy, i'd pick it up before anyone else does. Getting to be a rare car these days, and one that has been that well looked after would be an excellent buy.

Before you leap, are you certain that it's a genuine GTS? I could be wrong - and hope that I am - but I don't remember any of the HSV cars ever wearing the "Series II" badge that run of the mill Commodores got. It makes me a little suspicious.

i think your right on that one.
btw grab the VIN and ring HSV...they will tell you whether its original and all.
i did this when i was looking at a VTII GTS 300 limited edition.
got everything from build date, build number, etc
plus pull the front seat back and open the little carpet flap...underneath will be the VIN stamped. make sure it matches the one on the window

It has certainly got the hydraulic clutch setup that is unique to the HSV strokers.
Good thinking, I will ring HSV today. I'm pretty sure it's genuine, but thanks for alerting me.
I did the Vic Roads check yesterday, and the car has finance on it, so I will have to confront the owner with that today. He didn't tell me. I know he paid 38k for the car and he is in a sticky situation so hopefully that won't turn into a problem.
It's a hard decision for me as my last car of 10 years was a HG Kingswood!
I appreciate all of your encouragement. Thanks.
Just called HSV, they say that there were no series 2 VR GTS, although they are going to confirm this for me. This car is #265, one of the last of the VR's. Could it be possible a few series 2 were slipped in at the end?
Nothings ever bloody easy. I have to make up my mind today as the car will be heading to Bundaberg tomorrow if I don't want it! arghhh!

the series II badge could have been put on by the owner or a previous one
if HSV say the VIN is a authentic GTS and the VIN in the window matches the one stamped under the front seat then its at the very least 99% chance of being genuine

Insurance is a killer with older HSV's, as they are the thieves target unfortunately. Good luck with the purchase.

Done the right things mate. I got caught up in the excitement and forgot the rules with second hand HSV's or any cars. Check the numbers and encumberances (sp?). The only thing I noticed was the weird colour of the GTS stitching in the seats
Hope it all goes well. :driving:
Not gonna do it!
Bit of a shame, but there are too many anomalies, owners finance issues, uncertainty of the car, pressure to do a deal today, bugger it. I don't need the hassle.
I will still be on the lookout for a good VR VS VT GTS though. My time will come.
Thanks for all the input.
Cheers

Looks very nice to me as well.
This is the car that we picked up a cpl of weeks ago.
This was a 2 owner. Full service history. Done 0,000 klms in the last 3 yrs.
It is a VR Senator 215i A4. Totally std. even still has the original exhaust on her.
All works perfectly. Even the climate control A/C
And i recon it drives better than our previously owned VY SS M6
Have a look at this thread with the pics i took.

Bit of a bugger mate, but yeah, it's not as though it's the only one in the country or anything - hang in there for one that feels right.

I'm impressed, the guy from HSV actually got back to me and was quite interested in what I was up to. He confirmed that there were no series 2 GTS VR's!

I reckon get it. It looks clean and in immaculate condition for its age. The front bar is in need of a spray to remove the stone chips, but that can be done for under $250 and it will be well worth it.

Was this just GTS models? A mate of mine had a Series 2 VR Clubsport with Series II badges. Was certified genuine by HSV too.
Seems a lot of work went into it for a mock up!

No Series 2 VR GTSs? WTF
Mate of mine owned one from new - dont always listen to what HSV says
VR/VS GTSs are impossible to fake as they have the L in the vin, the only other one to have it is a 215 Senator
6H8VRK19LSL123456
If that first L isnt there then it's not a factory 5.7 stroker

Most cars have finance owing on them - I wouldn't let that effect your decision, you just make one cheque out to the finance company and the balance to the seller.

I was led to believe that the senator sig was converted to manual by the selling dealer(going on memory here)

Having only seen it in the photos posted, yet knowing that there were VR II GTS produced, I think that the person you spoke to at HSV may have been mistaken. I am sure that a close inspection of this one will reveal that it is what it appears to be.
As for the encumbrance, pay the finance company out and the change goes to the seller, then title lawfully passes to you. Of course, ensure that both parties fulfill their obligations to you, so that there are no hassles later on.
It still looks like a great buy.
Cheers,
Macca
