View Full Version : Modifications Voiding Warranty

Hi List,
Does anyone know what modifications would void the warranty on a VE SSV? I am thinking about tune, exhaust and CAI. All seem more of an "enhancement" for the good of mankind rather than significant alterations. :):eyes::)
Cheers

Your best bet is to talk to your dealer.
Some are mod friendly, some aren't - some will even arrange for the mods pre delivery for customers.

I spoke to my Holden dealer in regards to getting an exhaust for my SV6. They said that it is alright but if that modified part leads to another part failing it would not cover it under warranty. As Chops said they also recommended some exhaust shops to go get it done.
Another note, I read my warranty book. It says in there that the exhaust is not covered under warranty because it is a replaceable item on the car over time.

There is no answer you will like because, technically, ANY modifications from standard can void the warranty.
Many dealers will turn a blind eye to various things, within reason, but if a dispute rises, eg: PCM has a "tune" in it and the engine has melted a piston, you will mostly likely have no warranty.
Other examples are headers melting a rack boot, having lowered suspenion and a factory suspension bush has worn, clutch failure from a car with obviously a fair bit more "poke" than stock, and things like that.

This question gets asked all the time on here and I've copied my answer verbatim from another post I did not that long ago.
The following is from Holden's own website (as posted on here already a few times):
"Only Genuine Holden Parts and Accessories and HSVi Enhancements are comprehensively tested by Holden Engineers.
Given this, Holden does not recommend modifying your vehicle from its as built nature using non-Holden approved parts and accessories. Your vehicles integrity, performance and safety may be impaired by modifications using non-Holden approved components. Should you proceed with modifications, your New Vehicle Warranty will not be voided. However, should a problem occur which is attributed to the modificationrs made, any repairs will not be covered by Holden's New Vehicle Warranty."
As Chops said, it depends primarily on the relationship you have with your dealer and also their attitude in general to mods. I know my dealer for example is currently in the process of trialling various exhausts for VE.
Bottom line if worst comes to worst they can only knock you back on warranty if they deem that the failure is due to a modification you have had done. That of course means that potentially anything to do with the driveline is out if you add power eg. CAI, exhaust, extractors, tune etc, though it could be argued if you only did one or two of those that the car should be able to cope.
