As this was deep in the Wagon thread, I thought it significant enough to create its own thread.

HSV Maloo leaked
Glenn Butler, The Sydney Morning Herald, 05/10/07
An embarrassing mistake by an enthusiast magazine has exposed HSV’s all-new Maloo ute, reports GLENN BUTLER.
Top-secret details and pictures of the next HSV Maloo have broken cover a week ahead of their planned release due to an embarrassing gaff by Motor magazine.
The enthusiast motoring publication broke an agreement it had with Holden and its performance partner, HSV, not to publish details of the new HSV Maloo before the opening of the 2007 Sydney motor show on October 11.
While Motor has withheld copies of its November issue from newsstands, it’s understood a mistake in the distribution of the magazine resulted in copies being mailed to subscribers a week early, giving thousands of Australians a sneak peek of the new HSV Maloo.
Pictures of the Maloo - photographed by Helmut Mueller - in the magazine confirm that a leaked computer-generated image published on Drive.com.au last month was on the mark. The Maloo R8 ute is far more visually aggressive than the model it replaces. The front-end treatment is similar to the ClubSport R8 sedan, including the ground-hugging front spoiler, grille, headlights and foglights.
The magazine report confirms that, like most HSVs, the Maloo ute gets its own tail-light treatment, which in this case extends into the tailgate. The tailgate itself is also unique to HSV and is reportedly 15-20 per cent lighter than the Holden equivalent.
Like other HSV models, the Maloo R8 sits on 19-inch alloy wheels; HSV will offer 20-inch wheels and tyres as a cost-option. Mesh vents in the side skirt ahead of the rear wheels are unique to the Maloo, although they are nothing more than cosmetic.
The reports continues: "Maloo also gets a new remote-release hard tonneau and reverse parking sensors, both firsts for an Aussie ute. A full-size spare also remains, protected inside a carrier bolted to the underside of the car."
Maloo designer Julian Quincey told the magazine that HSV was keen pump up the visual aggression this time around.
"We wanted to give the young, outdoors Aussie the absolute pinnacle of the Ute," HSV designer Julian Quincey told the magazine. "We wanted the most bang for buck and the most differentiation from Holden to make sure the guy on the street could recognise this car as an HSV."
The magazine also goes into detail on the Maloo's mechanical package. Underneath the Maloo's bonnet sits the Gen IV 6.0-litre V8 engine as the rest of the HSV range. Its 307kW tune makes this the first Australian ute with more than 300kW, and is 10kW more than the last Maloo. Buyers will have a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, now with the upgraded Sports mode featured on the Holden Commodore Ute.
HSV chief engineer John Clark told the magazine the Maloo's mechanical refinement has been improved.
The report details suspension changes to the Maloo that include revised suspension settings, spring rates up 40 per cent at the front and 50 per cent at the rear over the sedan. Like the VE Ute, the Maloo gets electronic stability control, tuned in this instance to work with the 307kW V8 engine.
Motor magazine says the Maloo R8 ute, which goes on sale this month, will retail for $59,990 in manual guise, $61,990 with the six-speed auto. That's $1860 less than the model it replaces.
The unfortunate leak comes just weeks ahead of HSV’s 20th anniversary, which the company is planning big celebrations for, including a limited-edition model.

I don't mind the rear lights (should look better in real life / hopefully!)
Follows on with HSV cars being different to holdens.
- just remember alot of us whinged over the GTS / Clubsport lights initially but have become used to them (I actually really like them now).

and as xlr8 v8 said, the tail lights in the tailgate look like some lame sticker.
It'll probably grow on me, but initial opinion of the Maloo does nothing for me sorry.

Hey Fellas I posted the pic of the back of the maloo a couple of days ago on the 've maloo page update' page. In actual pictures rather than the one at the start of the thread it looks tough as nails and the back look awesome that pic and the one I posted don't do it justice.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but the whole rear of that is a catastrophy. With those side skirt vents, the whole rear looks like something you would find on a boxy yank tank.

As mentioned above, not a photoshop, these are real shots from the release of the the car contained in the latest Motor. Agree that the colour is terrible and the reflectors in the tail gate don't look the best but overall I reckon it looks horn. In the traditional colours it will look unbelievable on the road.
Unveiled in Motor this month as well is the first official shots of the VE wagon, a Calais V in Evoke (or a similar shade) with new look 20s it looks the absolute business.

Those rear lights look rediculas along with that hardcover. Way to over done imo.
There must be something wrong with me then.
I like it. Further rationalisation of the models, cheaper
Is MRC an option on a UTE?
With the GTS rims I reckon it looks tough and removes the proportion issue I reckon the sport variants of the VE range have.
Look forward to seeing one in the flesh.

yes what is it about black, Im addicted to the colour too, when ever I am asked to choose a colour I just automatically reply, 'black will be fine thanks'

Just about everybody has put a negative slant or comment on the new Maloo R8 and all you are doing is looking at it!
Remote locking hard tonneau, full size spare, cheaper and all you guys can do is whinge.....

The visual lines of the vehicle are awesome, you will all be back here in a few months eating humble pie. :flipoff:

I think a black one would look awsome!! It might just take a little getting use to, but i think allot of people will like it when they see it in the flesh. I wasn't a fan of the E Series HSV lights to when they first came out, now i think there are no lights that would suit the car more.

I can't say.
I think the Ute tailgate is a much cheaper pressing than a liftback or a sedan boot because HSV did nothing with the grange on the back. I would have loved to see the 'ring of LEDs' incorporated into the ute tailights... would have been nice.

Sry if this has been posted before but according to HSV's new cool site and its confiderator you can either have the R8 rims as standard and pay a sum extra for the GTS wheels!
I think thats good to let people pick their choice of wheels as usually the utes are just standard wheels only.
If i was buying one i would get the GTS rims and in red or black as the rea reflecter lights in those colours dont look that bad. It does look s h i t hot from the front and the side angle.

At first i thought it was horrible...but its growing on me! i actually like the rear, something different. Someone should photoshop a black one dumped on its ar$e and tint the rear lights slightly. Cant wait to see one in the flesh!!!

Hey I only just realised that the brake caliper setup on the VE is different to older models:
- VE: Both front and rear calipers behind the axle.
- VT-VZ: Front caliper in front of axle, rear caliper behind the axle.
Anyone know why this is?

I went in to A HSV dealer yesterday to see if they new anymore then the forum does about the remote lid {LOL }spring loaded key activated etc and to have a look at the seats in the R8 as opes to GTS because i dint think $3700 for the PACK is good value
the seats in the maloo LOOK diff on the HSV site to the cluby , or they are described diff aney way ,SO was geting the sales pitch ,and he says how many HSV cars have you i said this will be my third ,and he says DID you now HSV are giving discounts to 3rd time or more Byers ,and my ears pricked up and i said how much and he says it was a HSV thing and they would set the discount ?? ,i though BS so when i got home i rang another salesman who i have been dealing with and he said it was crap and you only get to go on the board a get a couple of free tickets for a couple years and the you have to pay to stay in the club ,AND the other thing the first guy was adamant about was the 427 is going to be a CALLARWAY {don't now how to spell it }built engine{ he new } was his his words ??? has any one heard of this discount ??

They've moved the steering rack in front of the front of axles for the VE (so calipers move the the back) opposed to having it behind. If I remember correctly, it's meant to give the steering a much more positive and direct feeling

^ better, but for the really nice chops (for wallpaper etc) you need at least double that size again - It is a shame that the HSV site doesn't allow you to download high-res versions.
You will have to take heaps of pics of yours when you get it and post them !

I had a good look at a red maloo on saturday. The interior/wheels/brakes/front half look great but what really lets it down is the design and fit of the hardlid. Not only is it overly bulky it hangs over the sides with at least a 10mm gap all round! The rear tail light extentions in the tail gate look like they are a sticker. Poor build quality HSV :limpy:
