I have a VX SS II and over the last week i have noticed a burning plastic smell thats terrible and also a sound that i can only describe as a metal fan hitting another peice of metal over and over. Im not sure if the sound has anything to do with piston slap as i can find a thread on what it sounds like.

Any ideas?

have a look under the car to make sure no plastic bags have got caught up and melted onto your exhaust system ... long shot but its happened to my old mans car ... took at least a week for it to go away completely.

Might be the cause of the sound if its flapping round continually while you are driving.

Or it could actually be something mechanical ...

I did look in the engine bay and as best i could under today for any platic bags or anything melted on but i couldnt see. The sounds wouldn't be that because its a tinny metal sound

Hi Tirone,

was the car running when you looked under the bonnet?

Did you remove the radiator shroud?

have you looked at where your exhaust comes out, as if you have lost one of the rubber hangers your exhaust may be touching your bumper.

no, i will check these tomorrow, the cars going in for a service in a week or two so i thought i would just try and get an idea of what the problem was before they tell me my engines gone or something.

just another thought as to the metal noise,

You may want to check the exhaust and the stearing rack clearance as it may be melting the rubber boots.

My extractors were hitting the protective metal covers at wot and i was told my car was pinging by some people but we bent them back into place and no more noise.

You should be able to check this by going full lock in bothe directions and shining a torch/light in if doing at night.

Just another thought as i only fixed my noise last weekend

Piston slap and burning plastic smell?
NO CHANCE.
Start with the basics as described in the above posts, then get more technical, rather than starting with a highly technical issue and having to backtrack to the basics...

I agree, piston slap is only cold and you can't smell it.
Check to see if your cooling fans are hitting anything.

So Have you had any luck finding out what it was?

I'll agree with that. Same thing happened to my old Torana, the plastic that held the fan in broke and it offset the fan which when the fan was running it would rub on the shroud and create a loud slapping noise whilst smelling of burning plastic due to rubing on the shroud. Depending of how fast you were travelling also as it would make more noise at higher km/h due to more air pushing fan around whilst drving at speed. But then again are the fans metal or plastic?
