just after a temporary fix ( when i say temp i mean about 6 months- 1 year ) to make the ve sound a bit tougher, got a qoute for a 2 1/2 inch cat back system, not after any power just some noice at this stage obviously until i can get a full system, cai, and a tune. Is this a good option how much will it help?? any thoughts

Cat back is a fair place to start and when you say temp why would you be taking it off..? I assume your talking about a 6 banger, in which case yes you would notice a nice difference in note like double the volume at least, depending on what brand you got..Might notice 1-2 ponies as well.

save your dollars for a full system. IMO the standard SS makes decent cabin noise for a stocker.
or you could get out the angle grinder

Mate.
Just bolt on some end cans if you can pick them up, add a nice note, no drone and sound sweet when you bury the jandal.
Powersound, xforce it does not matter, they still open up the note just enough and bolt up to the OEM catback.
Have tried it and it is sweet.
