I've got a problem with my 05 VZ Commodore, it makes a clicking noise from the rear as i start/stop mainly in traffic situations.
I've noticed the click appearing more on longer trips and it clicks only once on either the start or stop procedure and then its all good until the next start/stop.
I've taken the car to Westfield Auto Holden Dealer for warranty repairs and they couldn't even re-produce the problem apparently.
Was told that they tightened everything just in case and thats about it.
The noise is still there. I hope my explanation makes sense but i'm sorry not to be able to give the exact side of car the click comes from... maybe rear right more likely couldn't say definitely though.
Anyone any idea's what it could be? I'm taking it back to them on next opportunity.
Thanks in advance.

I've got a similar noise in mine, but mines a manual. I'm going to check out my gearbox mount and tailshaft couplings. My clutch is on it's way out too, so it may be my thrust bearing also. Changing between 3 diffs made no difference either.

i have had the same thing in my vy berlina.took it to PT the other day & they said that part of the handbrake assembly had frozen up.seems ok at the moment,so fingers crossed.

Which part of the assembly? At the lever or down the other end? I notice my handbrake needs adjustment at my drivers' side wheel, so maybe it's linked.

at the hub end, in the rear wheel assembly.pretty common apparently.they can freeze up or the spring becomes detached.

Thanks guys,
my initial was that it's the handbrake since when release the handbrake when initialy starting car, i get the same click/thump which i guess is a delayed release from the handbrake or something (so i've been told)
but the same noise is also apparent while driving slow (and i don't use the handbrake then :) )

other possibilites suggested to me were that the sliding part of the caliper is sticking or frozen & the other suggestion was the driveshaft grease had gone hard on that side in the bearing,if that makes sense.i did relube the caliper slides after PT did the h/brake just to make sure.hope this helps

Update on noise.
Well i can definately reproduce it now most of the time, its more like a thud noise from the rear and happens when stop/start and is very noticable in traffic. I can reproduce it by travelling at aroudn 15km/h and slowly slowing down a thud will come from the rear when the car becomes stationary.
The same thud then comes up when I resume driving and its very noticable unfortunately.
Due to time constraints I haven't had the time to get it checked up but finally booked an appointment on 1st Feb. I did take it to Westpoint auto (QLD) twice and both times they could not reproduce the problem so this time round I'll go for a drive with a mechanic.
I'm just hopoing the warranty will cover it...

does it happen when you accelerate and decelrate while still moving?
if it does it may be a loose yoke or some slack in the diff where when the engine drives the wheels the engine makes the drive shaft move to pick up the slack and when you slow down the wheels pick up the slack?
just food for though, maybe check your tailshaft and see if you can twist it?
Cheers

It happens while accelerating/decelerating too but at very slow speed around the 15km/h mark.
I'll check the tailshaft later gotta jack up the car.

Hey mate, yeah i had the same problem with my vx ss. The problem lies with the handbrake being loose. I took mine to a mechanic and he tightened my handbrake from the rear right wheel. The noise went away after that. if you have any other questions give me a yell..

well mine turned out to be the covers that go over the mag wheel nuts.they only have 1 bolt that holds them on & it tends to make them fit just a fraction crooked.took them off & hit the inside of them with the dremel & all gone.
