PART 1/2
WARNING VERY LARGE POST, allow the page to load. I have reduced the image sizes for quicker loading. Full resolution photos are available, just PM me.

DO NOT use the 'quote' facility when replying with comments or we'll end up with several huge pages of photos!! Thanks.

First of all I should mention that this is the H11 50W 6000K HID kit from Gerald (extremely helpful) at GadgetMaster.

Secondly I have not used the relay harness supplied and am running the wires off the standard headlight connectors without a problem. If you want to run the relay I can't help you.

Thirdly it should be noted that in the comparison shots my original headlights already had the H9 mod done to them (use the search button). So these original halogens will be much brighter than the standard H11 bulbs which just makes the final results even more amazing.

Fourth, this post also shows how to install replacement LED style parkers & numberplate lights.

Ok first things first, who wants to see some comparison shots???

Nuff of that, lets look at how it arrived,
___

Ignore everything else, this is the sticker that counts.

Open her up and I found the 2 extra sets of LED lights for the parkers and numberplates inside.

Make sure you check the stickers on the HID bulbs are the right Wattage etc, also double check the Ballasts.

Now take 1 Holden...

And remove the bumper. To do this in the Monaro consisted of three screws above the radiator and 2 screws in the each front wheel cavity. There are a few clips towards the back of the headlights. Gentle persuasion will win out. I also took off the plastic cover over the radiator for easier access (not shown in this photo).

Find the three screws holding the headlights in, and remove the headlights, careful with the headlight and indicator harness.

http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/011%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20035.JPG
Now that we have the headlight assembly out, open up the round plastic low beam cover, remove the H11 globe and look for a good spot to drill a large hole through without hitting any wires.
WARNING: Never touch the glass of the globes. Use a clean rag if you really have to touch/handle them.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/012%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20036.JPG
I used a 7/8” Speedbore bit which was a nice tight fit but a 1”/25.4mm would be easier. If you can manage it would be best to drill upside down so the swarf doesn’t get into the assembly. Drill and file away any rough edges/burrs.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/013%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20037.JPG
Ok now my kit came with a grommet with 4 wires going through it. Two of these wires have thin blade connectors which you can pull back through the grommet. Do this now and run the remaining 2 wires which are connected to the HID globe through the hole and attempt to get the grommet mounted properly.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/014%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20038.JPG
As mentioned earlier a 1” hole would have been a easier job but the 7/8” hole was a nice tight fit.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/015%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20039.JPG
That done now run the 2 bladed wires we had before back through the grommet.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/016%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20017.JPG
The grommet should look like this with the wires through.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/017%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20024.JPG
Go ahead, remove the protection on the HID globe and install the bulb. Never touch the globe parts except the rear.

Now you connect the bladed wires to the original headlight clip. I personally found the clips fitted nice and snug and just used electrical tape to hold them for vibration. Others may want to cut and solder.

TO NOTE: In the Monaro the Red/Blue wire connected to the black wire on the HID kit. The Red/White wire connects to the red wire in the HID kit.

IMPORTANT: If you don’t know the wires are no problem, try one way quickly... if they don’t come on straight away, switch the wires around.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/018%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20025.JPG
Hard bit done.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/019%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20026.JPG
Give them a quick test by plugging the lights back into the headlight wiring harness.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/020%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20028.JPG
While you have the headlights out you might as well do the LED parkers.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/021%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20027.JPG
Remove the Hi-beam plastic cover and remove the Hi-beam lights. The parkers will come out with a bit of perswasion with a flat head screwdriver. Unclip the old bulb.
If your like me and your LED light physically wont fit in the hole then your up for fun and games.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/022%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20040.JPG
If your blessed and have skinny fingers put the LED in through the Hi-Beam bulb hole and use your finger to hit the spot. Sound familiar? I’ve had plenty of practice and nailed it first time... everytime.

If you have chunky fingers, you need to engage the services of your son or local paperboy. Be warned, they may charge ridiculous icecream rates.
___
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/STEAKMAN/023%20Monaro%20V2%2050W%20HID%20Install%20042.JPG
Now that you have the LED in the hole you need to hold it there while you try and get the wiring clip on.

IMPORTANT: LED’s are diodes and a such will only work one way. If your LED’s don’t turn on as per Murphys Law, you need to switch the clip around costing you another icecream.

All done. Now plug the lights in and test the parkers, low beam, hi beam and the indicators because you touched them too remember.

Time to mount the Ballasts. You need to find some foam or packing to stop rattling/vibration. I used some door seal. Did the job nicely. Don’t forget to put some on the side as well.
___

I looked for a spot near the lights. There is a cavity directly underneath which I used.

Mount the Ballasts with some cable ties/silicon/ whatever takes your fancy.

Oh and don’t forget the numberplate LED’s. This is a simple clip job, but once again Murphy’s Law dictates you will be trying all 4 combinations before they are in and working. Here you can see the difference between Original (Left) & LED (right).

Congratulations! Job well done. I had to lower my lights a fair way to stop blinding fellow motorists!
The lights are totally awesome. Don’t you agree? I’m stoked.

Kudos to Haroc for use of his FTP for the images.
Kudos to Funky Munky for orgainising the Group Buy.
Thanks to Scoot1 for his photos and everyone involved for helping out.

Great post Steakman ... a little tip with the parkers, plug them into the harness (while out of the headlight) and then stick the whole thing into the headlight assembly, I always do it this way and it's impossible to loose them in the headlight.

Now I just have to find some time to do both of mine !!!

Unfortunately the parkers were too big and just would not go back into the assembly when I tried, hence the fun and games coming in from the other side. Oh on VY etc the finger trick might not work as they have a separate compartment for the parkers don't they? Somebody can confirm.

Thanks for the comments guys, made the effort worthwhile. Sorry about the spelling, I'm an engineer, nuff said really.:)

Just curious about the foggys, any pics with those on? are they still yellowish compared to the new HID's?

Sorry, didn't have the foggys on due to the fact one is blown and I've been too slack to buy a new one. Mostly because the foggys will be yellowish in comparison. I haven’t decided on getting some "white" ones yet as the yellow ones are suppose to penetrate better in fog... I'm standing on the wall on that one. So maybe one day I might get some white ones one day just to complete the look. :eyes:

He needs to move the pics from Haroc's server to Photobucket or similar so they are there permanently. However, given he hasn't logged on here since mid Dec last year it probably won't happen. :(

Wonder if Haroc still has access to them on a backup or something or if anybody else saved the pics and can post them on Photobucket?

Hackett_R8 also has an installation thread for HIDs, though he went to the trouble of removing the front bar which isn't necessary. It does however make access much easier if you can be bothered.
