Hi All,
I live in Victoria & occasionally go into the Vic Roads website seeing what custom plates are available-most good ones are taken but a couple are available... Any stories of big dollars paid as I can see a potential earner here if there's a market. They cost up to $495 so you'd want to be fairly confident of selling, maybe some people have some ebay stories? Any comments appreciated!

A plate is only worth as much as someone is willig to pay for it.
If you get a combo that a lot of people will want, you can get some decent $$ as they outbid each other, but don't rely on it for an income stream

Yeah, tend to agree. If you got in early and got the really good ones you could have made a pretty buck or two but now, not much chance. I knew the guy with the plates CAMARO (on his Camaro of course) and going back at least 15 years he was offered $10,000 for them!
I have LS2V8 and SVEE8 for sale and the price just keeps coming down and down....... Didn't expect a lot of interest for SVEE8 but thought LS2V8 might be sought after for a HSV now that I'm not allowed to get a VE Senator...... :toetap:

I dunno about Vic roads but in NSW custom plates cost you stupid dollars to get them ... and even stupider dollars per year to keep them.
Even personalised plates with basic letter/number combinations attract an annual fee - friggen rort IMO. :flipoff:
If you are thinking of making a return on number plates ... forget it, the odds on getting back what it costs you to A. get them & B. Keep them is VERY unlikely.

In VIC you pay once and you keep em. I think the figure is actually similar to the price per annum in NSW. I've picked out a set for when I go to N.T but I'm keeping it to myself and a select few mates until I get them.

you bet your arse theres money to be made, i hered a story once of when custom plates first came out, some clever bastard bought the plates "BITTER" with white letters on a green background, and what state was he from??? VICTORIA!!! therefore, what did the plates read???
VIC BITTER
apparently VB bought the plates off this bloke for an absolute mint and im not too sure wether they were used on the promo car or the company owners personal car, but still, pretty good story if you ask me, cheers

Nice story, I wonder if its true.
If it is, CUB are idiots.
As stated in another thread of a similar vane to this one (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=567103&postcount=7)
About 15 years ago, at a trade show, my mothers manager (NSW Sales Manager of then Dulux Autocolor) was approached by someone.
"I have the numberplate DULUX. I'll sell it to you for $20,000" said the guy
The manager replies with "How about you sell it to me for $500? otherwise I'll have a memo sent out to all reps and stores across the state tomorrow saying not to buy the plates if anyone tries to sell it to you"
The deal was done for $500.

If it's true, I'd say the main difference would have been that CUB saw he had the plates and made an offer, whereas the DULUX guy tried to "hold them for ransom" so to speak

When the Vic plates first came out the only colour combo was blue background with white lettering and it stayed that way for a long while.
Don't mean to sound BITTER mate but I say BOOOLSHIIIIT to ya story.

reminds me of an old VH wagon i see in my area sometimes...white letters on a green background COLDVB.. gotta love that.
i think there is money in a clever numberplate but some people shoot themselves in the foot by asking too much to begin with... look in the trading post for examples.. there were a couple of FPV combinations in there a few weeks back for 10g... who would pay that? maybe if the right buyer came along they could have made a tidy profit maybe 1500 or something but 10g? for myself to pay 10g for a number plate it would have to be really unique or very meaningful to me. not just your average run of the mill SIKHSV and the likes of that

Well I just bit the bullet & bought the Vic plate V8MAN, thought there was NO WAY IN HELL that wouldn't have been snapped up so there you go. Whether I get a quid out of it or not, point is, if you keep trying combos occasionally you might get something you really want!
Cheers,
Tim

Isn't DULUX a registered trade mark?
I wonder how that would play into all this if it went to court?

About 10 years ago, my brother had an LX SS hatchback, and he bought the LXSS numberplate over here in WA for about $200 I think.
He sold the car with the plate attached and the right to the plates, next guy ruined the car, sold it without the plates and was trying to sell the plates for $4000. Last I heard, he still has them, serves him right for being so bloody gready.:flipoff:
I personally don't agree with people profiteering from the sale of an item which always remains the property of the government anyway. If the plates are not on a car over here, they must be stored at a licencing centre/shire office. I had my plates off my car while changing vehicles and had to hand them in for storage.
If you have bought plates just so someone who really wants them cant have them for a reasonable price, I hope you get stuck with them. Sorry for the rant.:soap:
