Hi, brand new member
Can anybody tell me the history of the 4L60E trans ie models that used this trans.

It's been used in every Holden auto model VR-VZ (except VZ Calais V6 and SV6 auto). VE uses it in the Omega with recalibrated shift points etc. HSV uses the stronger 4L65E which can handle more torque. The 4L60E is the electronic version of the TH700 which first appeared in the VN. The TH700 transmission is sourced from America where I believe it was first used in the 87 Corvette.

Thanks Alister, I tried to find it on the net but I didn't have any luck.
Much Appreciated.

I don't think its a bad trans, a little weak for the LS1/L76 (which pushes it near its maximum safe torque capacity) but other than that its great. Factory shift points are never that good so it really shines after an edit :)

I think the TH 700R4 started on F/Y(firebird/camaro/corvette) body GM cars in 1982 and was renamed 4L60 at some point in the late 80s. The 4L60E started on F/Y body's and commodores in 1993, and was used in GM NA cars from 1994 onwards (eg. LT1 Impala SS).

Just for the record prior to the later model VZ's with the 4L65 Auto. From Aug 2004 to Dec 2005 VZ's 4L60 had a new torque converter with 13 times greater electronic smarts, plus a new hydraulic controller aimer at delivering smoother, less shocking shifts than previous models.

Sorry if posted elsewere

Until I read this I thought they were all the same. Happy I found it actually:)

I thought the V6 Commodores had the 4L40E and only the 5.0 and 5.7 V8s had the 4L60E. The Tahoe, Suburban 1500, Yukon, Silverado/Sierra 1500/ Hummer H3 all used the 4L60E

Nah champ, V6 and 5.0L, 5.7L, 6.0L V8 Commodores both used the 4L60E which is really not the right trans to use for the LS1/L76. All the other cars you mentioned use the tougher, heavier 4L80E. The 4L60E would shit itself in the Suburban.

Only the Suburban 2500, Sierra 2500/3500, Silverado 2500/3500 had the 4L80E (usually fitted with the Vortec 7.4L V8 or 6.5L V8 diesel) obviously before they used the Allison for the Duramax, and now they have the 6L80E for the Vortec 6L V8. I just did a quick google search and was right about the 1500 half-ton trucks http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/pts/438490355.html

They are the ones with the 6 lug wheels, 5.7 V8 etc. The ones with the 4L80E had the 8 lug wheels, and 11.5 inch diff
