No mates rates, no prep work done by yourself ... just pleb pricing.
How much would it cost to paint a car (a good job).
Obviously there's some big factors, such as metallic paint, harlequin paint, solids, kandys, pearls etc.
After seeying SSWMD's Kandy Apple Red Ute, I started thinking about how much it would cost for a good respray.
do you remove your interior and bake it? Or let it air dry?
Can anyone provide some info on what it would cost to get your car (sedan) done? (and have the obvious little nicks and blemishes attended to).
Cheers,
Seedy

i would imagine around the $4-5K mark for normal paint, $3-3.5K for the actual painting and the rest proabably with prep work depending on the condition of the body, but for something in candy apple red which would be like a 3 stage pearl which is a ton more effort i would imagine your lookin at prolly more than double the normal price. Then there is the factor of if you get the engine removed for painting the engine bay etc. I think it would bake for a small amount of time until it flashes off and then would air-dry, being summer it usually is ok with that.

It'll cost $6 - $10k Seedy
And the worst part is that unless you do the super-grouse job by removing engine, painting inside door-jambs, boot etc it's a sure way to reduce it's value by a similar amount. Short answer is - don't

I had a full respray on my VX GTS and it was 6k just the exterior areas, no interior of doors or engine bay etc. Same color with the two tone and only very minor repairs like stone chips. You may need to add to the cost new windscreen, head lights, fog lights as replacing them do make a fair difference too. Well to a 6 year old car anyway.

Seedy, for candy on a full sized sedan as a complete colour change with interior out - I am assuming also engine out - you would be looking at around $15K.
Durability of finish would require a baked enamel.
Candy historically required about 10-15 coats of lacquer over base to get the depth of "wet look", which is what accounts for the mucho $$'s.
Unless your car is going to be wrapped in cotton wool and never driven, I'd say steer clear of a candy job, as it requires a pretty skilled operator, and insurance companies are not that fond of the high $$'s to colour match and repair these types of paint jobs on daily drivers.
If you're serious though, give House of Kolour a call and discuss your options with them - they are No 1 on the custom car circuit for crazy-assed paint jobs.

cool thread! i too have thought about a full respray, but mainly due to the dodgy repair work and the poor painting effort!! then i started to think maybe just a clear coat (over blood orange) with a 'silver/purple' type flake through it. But i think i might be over spending money on this car now, i think i just want a new one to start all over again :bawl:

i think a good spray job without engine bay is worth $5-6g's, you can get some pretty good colours these days without going candy. candy starting at about 10 i heard, but like said is only good if your never gonna drive it cos if you get a scratch apparently you have to respray the whole car as you cant colour match it. also baremetal resprays are more $$$ ontop of a standard job but probably alot nicer finish. than you can get the good old respray the same colour and just do the outside for like $2-3g's. or you could be dodgy and change the colour only on the outside which is terrible for like $2-3g's awsell. but yeah decent spray job i say $5-6 grand.

Am doing a full respray on mine early next year and including gutting the car fully (engine, interior, suspension etc) and rebuilding, it's going to cost $17K (maybe a little more depending if I want some flake added)

I've seen cars with a basic job, rub back and respray/clear coat come up f'n awesome. some may shudder at the thought of this but the end result come out very well and good for a car that needs a bit more than a 'good' cut & polish.

well i wonder how many ppl here have had there cars painted. Ive had probley 15 or more cars painted.
Now most resprays cost around $3500 with out a colour change.
The cost of respraying increases greatly when you need to do a colour change.
This you can expect to bring it nearly double and depending on where you take the vehicle.
I would expect that like everything you can have a a cheaper job or a better job and i would just go to places to see the quailtiy of the work.
The quailty of the work really comes down to the last %15 of the job making sure its put back together..
If you were in melb i could recommend 3-5 places to get it done but in sydney i have no idea sorry..

Yeah I agree with Nick with the putting back of the parts. I had my wagon resprayed (not a colour change, it was botanica mica) and there were broken clips from the door trims , the rear windscreen wiper wasn't put on properly (I found that out the hard way when I put it on and the wiper just went straight down the tailgate, scratching the sh*t out of it. Cost me $4200. Apart from that I was happy with the paintjob though.

For a good spray job on the outside only can easily run upto 5 to 6 grand. If you are thinking of changing colours you would need to strip the car right out to do a proper job and depending where you go to have it done this could easily run into 10 or even upto 15 grand. I would suggest you shop around and look at the work coming out of various shops very closely as when the paint job is fresh it always looks much better than it does after a couple of years even when always looked after.
Good Luck with it.

My Boyfriend is a car spraypainter and he would charge around 4,000 for a full respray and repair which is inside and outside with all repairs done aswell....he would bake the doors bumper boot lid guards bonnet and basically nething that can be bolted off the car first then he would do the door jams and the shell of the car baked in the oven second plus that would include a cut and polish aswell...dont get ripped off...i have been ripped off the people whom put my diff in my ss said it was a single spinner me not knowing any different got ripped a lsd diff for a single spinner as u can imagine me boyfriend was a very angry person at me...so yeah i personally wouldnt pay morethan that for a basic change of colour, for a candy colour u'd be lookin at the 6-8k mark
I think it comes down to the shop itself for the price. How busy they are at the time and even the mood of the person quoting. They may even base their quote on their idea of how much they reckon you can afford. Ive seen excellent cheap jobs and some crappy expensive jobs. Find someone who is recommended by someone you trust, then see if you like their work.
