As title says, drive did a performance comparison between a Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Tarago V6 and a Falcon XT, 400m times are interesting to say the least. 400m were run at WSID
http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=44733
The first battle ground was ''Wicked Wednesday'', a weekly event for enthusiasts at the Western Sydney International Dragway, Sydney's purpose-built drag strip next to Eastern Creek Raceway.
The dash to 60ft (18.3m), a guide to initial acceleration, confirmed this. The Porsche got off the line better, hitting 60ft in 2.251sec, compared with 2.314 for the Tarago on its fastest run. The Tarago wasn't helped by the initial wheel-spin as the front wheels struggled to launch it. But by the 330ft (100m)mark, the Tarago was on top and from then on it was no contest. The Toyota clocked a fastest time of 14.993sec, compared with 15.456sec for the Porsche - half a second difference. Terminal speed in the Tarago was 149.61kmh, compared with 141.85kmh for the Porsche.
Two possible conclusions could be drawn: either the Cayenne is a very slow Porsche or the Tarago is a very quick people-mover. There's truth in both statements. Byway of comparison, the Tarago was as quick as a 1985 Brock VK Group A SS Commodore at its peak.
The Falcon has a huge weight advantage here, more than half a tonne lighter. But the Porsche retains an edge through all-wheel drive, although the rear-drive Falcon should launch better than the front-drive Tarago. The Falcon's quickest time to 60ft is 2.165, about one-tenth better than the Cayenne. By 330ft, it's three-tenths quicker and its fastest time is 14.593secs, almost a second quicker. Terminal speed was 154.32km/h.
Quick times for a people mover and Falcon

A bog stock Falcon does a 14.6 quarter these days? That doesn't sound right...
I hired a previous-model Tarago for a couple of days last year, and the one thing I didn't really want it to do was go any faster - not considering the way it handled!

Interesting... those time do seem a little quick for sixes in heavy cars. My old man actually has a Brock VK Group A SS and I don't see a FWD tarago being able to match it down the quarter:hmmm:

stop watch timing again ???
The falcon is a 6-speed auto. Might explain a bit.
Also, from the article:
Tonight was a quiet, if not slow, night at the drag strip. A chill in the air and looming rain clouds had turned a lot of punters away.
keywords: Chill and night.
Good effort for the XT though, they should've thrown an omega or SV6 in there too for good measure.

I don't care how much power a Falcon XT or Tarago has I would not want either of them. I'd be more than happy to pay the premium for the slower Porsche rather than drive a POS Falcon XT.

You'd seriously spend more money to buy the worst Porsche ever built? I'd rather have the Falcon and the smug self-satisfaction that comes with not wasting money...

people dont buy a cayenne for its performance down a drag strip, and im sure most people that buy them are more than happy with them.

yeah for sure, because everybody who has worked hard and made a bit of coin over the years is an idiot.....
damn those people for building a nice lifestyle for themselves.

What? It's got nothing to do with working hard and building a nice lifestyle, and everything to do with them making an exceptionally poor car buying choice. There are much, much better cars available for Cayenne money - or you could buy the almost identical VW Touareg, for less!

what if they just like that particular car more than any others, they might like the styling more than any other. (even if it does have a lot in common with the VW)
you could argue the same thing about your SS, you could get an Omega which is pretty much the same car, except for a different engine, body kit, suspension and so on . except it would be what, 30, 40% less cash.
I agree it wouldn't be my choice of car, in fact far from it, but my point is their opinion on what is the best car for THEM is just as valid as yours. their choice doesn't make them an idiot

Meh. When it comes down to it I don't really care what anyone else buys, but that doesn't mean I won't think they've bought a crap car. And I reserve the right to think that someone who deliberately bought a crap car is an idiot :)
And this is where I will leave this discussion, as I don't want to get into a long debate about this.

thats cool, but i think anyone that judges someone to be an idiot based purely on the car they choose to buy (especially when it is something as succesful as the cayenne which has sold great throughout Europe) is an idiot, and i have the right to think that.

You don't happen to own one of these slugs do you ;)
Yes, but that doesn't mean they're not idiots :)
And it doesn't mean that they are.
Why would you spend more money on an SS over a (What was) an SV8? or a V8 executive? Answer: Because you want to. End of story. Doesn't mean that the SV8, Exec, or SS owners are idiot's.

Cars should not be judged on their time down the quarter mile strip when they are a POS such as a Falcon XT or Tarago. These cars are both so boring to drive that no amount of mumbo can make them entertaining. If anything, power just turns them into death traps given their poor handling and crap brakes.
THe Porsche is all class with exotic 4WD styling, nice detailing and great build quality. Marco might call me an idiot, but I think those who cling to their value-for-money argument in relation to this comparison are nieve.

Bit of a stupid, pointless review !
Why would you buy a Cayenne, a Range Rover, a ML or X5 ?
Because of the perceived status this will give you. It's all about the image/badge in this bracket of cars. (who really takes them on dirt daily?!)
Your rich mates would think less of you if you turned up in a humble Landcruiser / Pajero / Patrol etc.
Are they idiots for buying these Prestige SUV's ? (I think they are but that's my opion)
In the end It's their money so they can waste it how they want.
On a side note : That XT Falcon is quicker than / as quick as the legendary GTHO !!! and gives a 10.9ltr per 100klm fuel use !!!!
How much were those GTHO's going for again !! :stick:

You just contadicted yourself in one breath ,the Tarago and Falc are POS, but in the next breath your banging about the Porsches nice detailing etc, so you base purchases purely on form not function ???
Your telling us that the Porsche would not be a boring drive?? , being slower than a Tarago and with similar dynamics as the Falcon. Why would it be better to drive then ???
You put up a fantastic argument there:rofl:

dont like SUV's either, but people buy BMW SUVs etc for the same reason as the sedans, whilst some buy them for the image most dont, and yes a landcruiser (although "humble" also cost a lot of coin) will do the job, you cant even begin to compare them on the road. the landcruiser drives like a truck
the simple fact is these SUVs are good quality cars that are nice try drive, have sh*t loads of room, and people like the look of them
an epica etc does the same job as BMW sedans etc, the BMWs cost a sh*t load more, but they are also a lot nicer so people are happy to pay the cash for them, and good on them just because people can afford nice cars it doesnt make them "rich people just buying for the image"
i could use the same arguments about an SS etc.....there are plenty of cars that get you from point A-B a lot cheaper, so do you guys just buy them for the image? and whilst you might say "i love the V8 and love the feeling of driving them" but surely an SV8 does the job for much less!

Whilst I agree on the "spend your money anyway you like especially if you have sh*t loads of it" idea, I do still believe it's all based on image.
(chrism697 you sound slightly defensive about "rich" people)
I think dealerships and customer service probably plays a huge part aswell. You get treated very well / have a nice coffee or lunch / at a Mercedes service centre etc - More the "LIFESTYLE" side of it. Look at a BMW, MERCEDES or AUDI dealership - very different look and feel to a Holden dealership.
Toyota make more reliable cars than any of the germans - why don't you see many rich people in toyota's ? - you see them in a Lexus instead (image / badge)
Why would you buy an SS over a V8 Executive - image mainly
There is nothing wrong with buying a car mainly for it's image - but there is something wrong when you can't admit it :)

Im not being defensive as such, (for the record im certainly not rich although i hope to be in a situation in the future, to buy cars of similar values). but i just think most people buy prestige cars for a few reasons and yes image can be one of them, but i dont think its in a snobby "look how much money i have" sort of way. (well most of the time anyway)
i know why i buy the cars i do (currently have an SS ute), i buy cars that when i look at them they make me smile and say "man that looks amazing" when i drive them i get that feeling of "oh yeah i feel good right now" and when i sit in them i like to look around at the cabin without saying "sh*t that gap between the trim plate and the console is big" and "i cant believe that part is already falling off".....and at the end of the day i think european cars are fantastic at ticking all of those boxes, my car ticks all of those boxes and im wrapped with it, there are plenty of foreign cars that i think put bigger ticks in those boxes and with some luck and hard work i hope to be in one down the track (im still pretty young) if not its not the end of the world
i didnt mean to have a crack at anyone in particular, but i just see it on the forums a little that some people seem to think that anyone in a car up around the 200k mark is a arrogant prick (just have a took at the "why do people in crap cars take on people in good cars" thread or whatever it was called

Yeah good post - I know where your coming from now.
 ""sh*t that gap between the trim plate and the console is big" and "i cant believe that part is already falling off"..." - That cracked me up, cause it's mainly true ! (that's called character! and Aussie cars seem to have heaps of it!!)
""man that looks amazing" when i drive them i get that feeling of "oh yeah i feel good right now" - That's partly what I mean by "image"
Some of the people in $200+K cars are knobs but not because they choose an expensive car. But I admit that it is easier to just he think "wanker" rather than well done on a nice car.
Good luck on your dream car - I'll have the new RS6 Wagon please.

haha thats true, but how old is a GTHO again??
fast in their day but nowadays they are slugs - I remember having a 2L 93 pulsar with 105kw, it used to haul ass and i never lost a traffic light GP... we still have one in our family and its a slow POS now, todays everyday cars are just so much faster !!
my mate had a white VK SS non-group A which we all thought was the fastest thing on the road - i pulled up next to a VL SS the other week that sounded bombed off its tits and walked it piece of piss in my stock phoon..
i think its great that stock everyday average cars of today are beating legendary 'supercars' like the GTHO... imagine in another 20-30yrs when the soccer mom cars are beating todays Typhoons/VE GTS's etc !!!!!!

Nope! A valid point is the performance is 1/4 mile related...pitch them against each other in a 60-100 or 100-160 and then some stopping tests and see how the results fair!!!!:)
Who buys a car without considering the public perception or at least what we personally believe the perception to be!!!No matter what the budget!!

Its like all Euros if you get the base models expect other cheaper brands to be an equal. Also the big 4WD is 2.2 tonnes, so if it orginally was meant to be a performance vehicle it would not weight that.
