Some people will probably claim to know this already, but, I didn't :)
This is from an email that I received last week, read on....
The Worlds Best Kept Auto Secret
I have been driving (legally) for over a decade. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dash that was staring me right in the face the whole time. I didn't and I bet you probably haven't either.
Quick question, what side of your car is your gas tank? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away. My solution is to uncofortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. If you don't do this in your own car you definetly have done it in a borrowed or rental car.
Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury.
If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo above). It is that simple!
I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated!
Why don't the dealers share such importnant information with car buyers? I don't understand why this isn't in the drivers ed manual? I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me? The only possible explantion can be that all these people probably don't even know!
Go out and share the worlds best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept secret.

Some cars (such as the wifes euro) has a gas pump, and an arrow that points to the side that the fuel tank is located...

Someone sent that to me last week too, so I went and checked a few cars. Simple answer, NOT TRUE. Nice idea though.

ya bunch of gumbies
when you pull into the petrol station, pop the fuel door latch.
Use your side mirrors to see which side it appears in

Sorry Seedy, there's no remote fuel latch on the VE. You have to get out of the car and press the flap to pop it open.

Which cars did it not work for? I have only looked at our Impreza
and it works for that.

Thats low-tech
Do you use a key to unlock the cap?
What stops someone syphoning your fuel?

The fuel flap locks when the doors are locked. Amazing what technology can do these days :)
It's actually really well done. Go check a VE out one day
BTW the story is just silly. Of couse it's going to be right approx 50% of the time.

Captiva and Rodeo to mention two.
Interestingly the Barina Sedan and Captiva have an arrow pointing to which side the fuel flap is, so the fuel bowser handle theory doesn't apply. No doubt by coincidence it will apply to some vehicles, just not all.
All of my cars have arrows. (Except for my Mini - that has a tank of each side)
Captiva and Rodeo to mention two.
Our rodeo here at work has an arrow too.

And believe it or not, if you are on the wrong side of the bowser, the hose actually reaches over the car... wow!

I laugh when I see people waiting in line because they don't realise this. there have been a few times when I've driven in to a petrol station, straight past 3 or 4 cars waiting to use "the pump on the correct side". I stop, pull the nozzle over to the tank and then just hold the hose off the car. Funny thing is looking at the people still waiting in line and seeing the dirty looks they give me.

I have two simple solutions to this no doubt perplexing problem for some people:
1. When you fill up your car carefully note which side of the car you are on. In some cars you will be on the right hand side, on others the left. No matter which side you are on, REMEMBER THAT SIDE. That will be the side you need to fill up on next time around.
2. Regardless, as already mentioned, the beauty of petrol pumps is they are fitted with hoses. These magical attachments are long enough to reach to the other side of typical vehicles. Bingo! Your car will drink its fill and you won't have to listen to stupid e-mail crap like this.
Had to dramatise it a little :)

Many years ago, Shell gave out small shell stickers and the idea was to stick one onto the inside of the windscreen, either at the bottom right or bottom left depending on which side the filler is. Then, if you forget, a quick glance was all that was needed.

You obviously only drive the one car, some people are in and out
of different cars all the time. No one said you had to read the
crap I posted, you chose to ;)
I knew the good people of this forum would let me know in a blink
it is was true or not, saved me going for a walk and checking all
the different work cars lol.

otherwise in most cars the exhaust is on the opposite side to the fuel filler, but still i have no touble remembering what side the filler is on once i know the car, if its not mine tho, it can be a hassle and an idea like this would be great.

i noticed the exhaust was always opposite until Holden brought out dual systems, and most small mitusbishi's have the exhaust on the same side, like Mirages etc.
