View Full Version : Bloody clutch noise?

We recently had a problem with a customers new clutch that was really pissing us off. After hearing the noise, the gearbox came out to replace the slave/thrust bearing. Gave the car back to the customer and after driving approx 30k the noise was back:confused:. I rang Pete from Tex and described the noise. He hadn't heard of this noise, but to his professional credit, sent me down another X grip clutch. Fitted the new X grip and sent the customer on his way again. The customer rang me again and apologised as the noise was back!!!!!!!. Crieky. Big Rob and myself ripped out the box again whilst the customer and girlfriend were relaxing in the office. What we found were unusual marks on the inside diameter of the sinted brass spigot bush(the old school 308 holden engine one). We fitted a genuine Holden roller tyre spigot bearing, refitted the fantastic Tex clutch/gearbox and gave it back to the customer. After a week of driving=no noise=Bloody grouse. Thanks again to Pete from Textralia and the cusomer for being so understanding. Cheers all. Chev

You've got to love it when the back yard boys do "make shift" repairs. It leaves a wonderful surprise for anyone one trying to do the right thing later on. Great work there Gary, as usual you and Bog Rob have shown your commitment to the customer. Keep it up, and don't worry... the footy season starts soon....

Hey swing. No back yard boys here. I fitted the brass sinted spigot bush. Have been for years. I reckon its been a change in the manufacture of the bush. I won't be fitting any of those spigot bushes any more. By the way its Big Rob:rofl:

Ahh I see.... that makes it much more of a pain then...

The last time I used a sintered bush was in the 186 in the Landy. But that car made so much noise I had to got one of those flashing aerials for the mobile so I know when it was ringing . The last spigot bearing I used was for the Toyota 5 speed conversion in the FB, mounted to the 138 grey motor.

What was the noise and when did it happen? My car makes a noise at idle when not in gear (a rattle). It goes away as soon as the clutch is pushed in I was told by the guys that put my clutch in that it is normal. Doesn't sound normal to me. Could my problem be the same bearing?

Spigot bearing noise will only appear when the clutch is pressed IN not the other way around. Without actually hearing your noise it's pretty hard to tell what is going on, but all Holden M6 boxes have input shaft bearing noise. It's loud enough to hear when the car is idling and in neutral when the radio is off. This noise will stop as you push the clutch in as the input shaft stops rotating. Providing it's not overly loud, it's nothing to worry about.

Mine's the same.. has done it for ages.. at first i thought it was the stuffed clutch but i've since had a Tex put in and a new slave cylinder.. still got the noise.. i've learnt to live with it but if anyone comes up with a fix I would definately like to get rid of it.

Is this a noise while the pedal is already completely compressed or it is made while the clutch is being pushed in? Mine makes a noise when being pushed in and it kinda sounds like a dodgy spring or something although nobody has found the problem when I gave them the car.

I need a new clutch now anyway hehe.

OK, here's the rough breakdown.....

soft grumble when in neutral clutch all the way out.

Input shaft bearing noise. This is normal, but not if it's excessively loud.

( In neutral with the clutch out, the input shaft is spinning at the same RPM as the engine. This also spins the input shaft bearing which is where the noise comes from. If you push in the clutch, the pressure is released from the pressure plate and the input shaft stops turning, so the sound will stop. You only notice it when sitting at the lifts as the other road noises usually drown out this sound.)

squeal, grind, grumble as the clutch is pressed in. Usually also felt through the pedal.

Worn throwout bearing. Not normal.

( As you press the clutch in, the first point of contact is the throwout bearing and the pressure plate levers / springs. The throwout bearing must rotate freely so as not to wear the pressure plate, but also transfer the pressure to "release the clutch. If it is faulty, it will make noise either from within it's own bearing surfaces or once it's seized, where it's spinning against the pressure plate.)

uneven low pitched whine / squawk sound as the clutch is released in gear. May also be noise when the clutch is held to the floor.

Spigot bush / bearing. Not normal.

( as the clutch is released, you have the maximum loading on the spigot bush / bearing. Once the input shaft is turning at the same speed at the crank, there is no movement at the spigot, so no noise. When the car is stationary and the clutch pressed in there may be some noise if the input shaft is not rotating )

There are many other noises, but these are probably the most common. Remember that all sound is produced by movement between 2 objects, so if something sounds wrong, look at what parts are moving.

I probably should point out that I don't actually work at Chevs so can't speak for them in any way. Top blokes though, always willing to help out where they can.

I did contradict my self a bit, didn't I.......

In post "6" I really should have said that spigot noise will only occur when there is movement between the spigot and the bush / bearing. This normally occurs when the clutch is IN or just as the clutch is being released.

Thanks Swingtan, your explination makes sense.. mine seems to have gotten louder over time though.. maybe the bearing is on it's way out.. i'm guessing that means the box has to be pulled to bits..

With all Gear box noises, the first thing I'd do is check the oil level. If it's been a while since it's been checked, it could be low, or if it's never been checked the oil is probably long over due for replacement.
