View Full Version : VE manual mods
We had the pleasure of working on Brads VE SS M6 from Echuca. First was a base power run which netted 213.2RWKW. Then on the hoist for a complete HM exhaust including headers, hiflow cats and their "Drone Free" technolgy mufllers. With a CAI and front bar off for the fantastic BRM (Big Rob Mod) air induction system. We complemented these modifications with a new RIP shifter (thanks Phonz and Wayne) from GM Motorsport. After a VCM HP Tuners PCM calibration(tune), the final power figure was 254.5RWKW and plenty of mid range torque. Thanks again to Rob and Graham for the grouse work and Curtis,Tit and Wonky for the support. Cheers Chev:)

As always Chev, a pleasure to watch Big rob and yourself work.
Good figures on the dyno, we all missed out on the sweep on the final number, the 213 start point threw us a bit! 254 nice and solid and consistent!
Got to watch out for them "bongs" on the HM system eh! they are now fitting drug taking devices to the exhaust systems!
Nice to meet Brad, he did have a smile on his dial, impressive power / torque gain and the HM system sounded sweet on the customary drive by!
cheers

Good result Chev. I can certainly vouch for the new HM catback .... sounds fabulous and is truly a no drone system too. Mine has been measured at 90 dB too, yes actually a legal one. Chev, can you comment on the headers and high flow cats ... the kws seem to be there despite the headers having short pipes.
Titanium.... what does your comment mean, re the smell or drugs from the exhaust?? Mine smoked for about 5 minutes when first fired up as the fibreglass in part of the rear mufflers is wrapped in plastic and is burnt off (OHS issue at HM for the handlers, hence no loose fibres are handled). The fancy helmholtz "hotdogs" and similar rear muffler design works a treat to stop the drone.
Whoever said 2.5" systems don't work in VEs ...you were wrong. Great work Chev.

Smell of drugs? never mentioned that.
There a a couple of devices on the sections of pipe leading to the rear mufflers that looked subtle and interesting. When Chev phone HM to enquire what they were, he was advised thay are called bongs.
IMO the short headers and modified standard cats cost about 10 - 13 RWKW, compared to the long 1 5/8" headers around.
Curtis and I running when we were running very similar set ups with 2.5" cat backs, long headers, CAI & tunes were at 265 and 268 RWKW on Chevs dyno.
Yup, 2.5" cat backs are pleanty for VE's with bolt on / in mods.
How does the car feel Brad?

Tit ....bongs, or hotdogs!!! They are actually hotdog in appearance but in reality they are helmhotz reflection chambers. Each "hotdog" is a straight through design, hence no restriction, but there is a small hole into the empty sealed outer cone, hence a pulse is reflected back to the main pipe to cancel out certain frequencies. The "hotdogs" in line are different in size and cancel out different frequencies. This is a better design than the "two in two out" approach of the std system and also the XForce system as there is no restriction in the front section.
A similar pulse reflection chamber is built into the rear mufflers too ...my calcs show the three chambers are tuned for 1200, 1500 and 1800 revs, or there abouts. Old school thinking is to use fibreglass wrapped around a perforated tube to dampen noise. The VE drone is so severe when the triple flow std muffler flow path is reduced to a single pass, that another approach (pulse reflection instead of absorbsion) was needed. HM adopted both in the rear muffler design and it seems to work well.
The HM catback sounds great and gives good power, maybe the headers/cats need more design input, but hard to get a proper length (around 34") in the available space. The XForce headers are also a bit short, so life becomes a compromise if the cat position is to be retained.
What's next guys ....the new Peter Starr inlet manifold looks interesting!!

Hi to All
Gary thanks for the info back on the system fitted last week. We think it's a good result for very much a standard car.
You must have misheard me on the phone last week - the "Bongs" as they were referred to are actually 'Boms", basically, they are very short hot dogs that take up some of the vibration through the system.
The VE system is extremely long - especially compared to the older VT-VZ systems. These little boms help take away some of drone from the pipes.
As for the headers and cats, they are made to fit in exactly the same place as the OE manifolds and cats and hence take a normal system. They will also operate without a "tune", although we do recommend getting a tune once the headers and cats are fitted to get the best results.
As this was a low Km car, we think you will see better results once it has a few more K's on the clock as it frees up a bit.
Anyway - Great job Gary - We hope the customer is happy with the result

Car had done about 13,000 kms ..... not so low I guess, compared to the ones being modded from brand new ....:)

Boms... Bongs, whatever you want to call them, they work great, the new HM system on my car sounds great and has become even deeper over the last few days.
I'm really pleased with the end result, Chev, Rob and Graham did a great job.
Time to start saving for a cam.
Cheers
Brad.
Glad you like it Brad. Was nice to meet you. Very sweet sounding car mate. Thanks to the gang at HM Headers for a grouse exhaust, Phonz at GM motorsport for the RIP and Big Rob for his BRM and Graham for his oustanding welding:bow:Cheers Chev
