Im looking to buy a vz ss ute. Is there much of a difference between an ss and a ssz, from what i can tell the ssz has the pod gauges on the dash and cv8 brakes? can anyone tell me more.

You can buy my ss ute if you want...07 model, silver, auto, leather, climate, hardtop, adjustable suspension, cam, , headers, exhaust, cam, 19" BBS challenge wheels, tunes to 275rwkw 18,000 k's...nice car.

If you buy one of the last VZ SS, say late '06 or '07 then you'll get a 6.0L but SSZ are 5.7L. Also the bigger brakes, hard tonneau, thunder badging, leather and climate control as mentioned, it all comes down to personal preference though.
I personally don't see the extra stretch for a Thunder worth it really because mine has body coloured leather, climate and hard cover, the only thing I missed out on was the wheels and brakes but I'd rather have the 6.0L. Like I said though, all personal preference.

Cheers

My mate just got rid of his SSZ, and if i was to buy a vz ute now, i would go for the last of them that came in 6.0lt.....if your not keen on mods the 6.0lt standard has some punch, or basic bolt on's are seeing almost the same numbers, sometimes more (depending on tune) than cammed 5.7's.......you can always upgrade the brakes yourself, Holmart have good kits....and most people change the rims anyway, so the SSZ is a bit of a waste IMO....

Thanks for all the info guys. I spoke to a dealer today and from what he said the ssz was the last of the 5.7's and they specked them up to sell'em.
Apparently the ssz came standard with pod gauges, climate, leather, bigger brakes, 18x8's and a HBD hard top. The thunders were the first with the 6.0 but missed with all the extra's.

The thunders didnt miss anything, the thunders got 18's, leather, hardlid, climate and the 6ltr with bigger brakes aswell (not sure on spec vs ssz though). Only thing SSZ has over Thunder is pod gauges, and given choice of gauges or 6ltr I know what I would choose... errr what I DID choose!

just a quick question about the brakes on the vz ss 6ltr .. is it just the front caliper that they changed or the rotor as well .. and the rears are standard still ?.. ( sizes of the rotors would help .. have tried to look it up but can not find anything)

any help would be great

The SSZ has 320mm front rotors and 290mm rear rotors, and yeah the front caliper is larger than standard SS, still twin piston though. I'd assume the series 2 VZ (6L) would have the same size brakes. The SSZ also has vented rear rotors, i'm pretty sure the earlier ones were solid.

Mate of mine has my old SSZ ute for sale. Black, stock everything. Probably do a deal on the 20" chrome dirty dog wheels too. 40,000 km odd, replaced front rotors recently as they were warped. PM me if you like. In Wollongong.

I think someone may have either mixed up the fact a VZ 5.7 runs a bigger (electronic) throttle body than earlier (cable) models, or that VZ 6.0 use a bigger one than VZ 5.7.
Either that, or someone had too much  one night near you...:jester:

As per VZ Monaro, these used 330mm x 32mm front rotors with bigger C6 Corvette front calipers, rather than 296 x 28mm original, and 286mm x 18mm vented rear rotors, rather than same diameter but 16mm thick solid rotors. The rear calipers are basically the same as the solid ones, but used 1mm thinner pads to make up the difference.
Crewman versions, however, retained the solid rear brakes.
As of 2006 and the 6.0 models, they kept these big brakes, but removed the red coating, reverting to "stock" finish.

I sold it to him 2 years ago, when I got my new VE SSV ute. Probably wants about 23K for it. As I said, PM me if interested.

L98 Thunder is you can afford it mate, no brainer for me tbh

But if you cant, the SSZ was a good run-out deal back in late 2005.

They are the optional HBD brake package. Only HBD's ever came out with the lion logo on the fronts.
