Hey fella's

Well the VE demon's finally got the better of me a few weeks back so
we sold the VY SS and now I'm the owner of a brand spankin new
VE SS, my first ever new car, and I gota say its faaaaaarking awesome :)

Not long after I had my appendix removed (great fun) and with countless
hours at home with nothing to do but scratching my balls and surfing
the net (ls1.com) I started researching mods to crank up the LS2.

I thought I'd return the favour to everyone that posted their VE
results by posting my own results. What mods I chose, why I chose
them, how much they cost me and most importantly how much
power they made. Hopefully I can make someone else's decision
easier in the future.
Anyway here's a few pics

To start with I had the car dyno'd at the shop doing the tune,
it churned out an almighty 216rwkw at the wheels, a touch low I think
but the car had only done 600k's at that stage so it may just have
needed a bit more of a flogging to loosen up. That was the easy part :burnout:

First step was the exhaust. Bloody hell - how hard was it to sift
through all the info on here and make a decision? Bloody hard.
Not easy for someone that's relatively new to LS1's/LS2's.
Anyhow after countless hours of research and visits to exhaust
shops I decided to go with the 4 into 1 non ceramic coated
pacemakers. Mainly because of their good rep, but also because
I had pacies on the VY SS which had to be one of the sweetest
sounding exhaust's I ever heard.
I decided to go with the 4 into 1 pacemakers instead of the
shorter pacies that fitted up to the original cats mainly on the
exhaust shops advise, while I was there he was fitting a new
system to a VE so had the old stock VE exhaust manifold and
cats on the ground and explained how the airflow was restricted
with a shorter header setup... anyway it made sense to me.
The pacemakers set me back $1040 fitted which I thought was reasonable. :)

I guess the majority of forum members would already know this,
but for those of you that don't these headers didn't allow me
to keep the original cats because of their length (I think that's
right, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). So aftermarket cats
were also on the menu. I went with magnaflow cats because
that's what my exhaust shop were supplying and the price was
reasonable, $250 each.

With the replacement of the cats came the O2 sensor issue,
I wasn't too worried about it because the car was getting a
tune the following week so would have the problem edited out,
that's if it ever arose. I'm told that on some VE's the 02 sensor
will trip immediately after the new exhaust is installed, on others
in can take weeks or even months, again feel free to correct me
if I'm mistaken. Anyway after a week of driving the engine light
didnt make an appearance.

I chose an Xforce 2.5" mild steel catback next for a few reasons,
I contacted a few forum members with a similar setup who replied
with good results (thanks Curtis & SS Enforcer). I also did some
research on old posts and found Xforce to be a popular choice,
that ontop of everyone saying how sweet the sound was.
There also bloody good value, I picked up mine for $700 from
ebay, couldnt go wrong with that!. Except that there was a
bloody chip out of one of the exhaust tips which I only noticed
when I got home. I decided not to go with the stainless steel
purely because of price, I was on an extremely strict budget,
women just don't understand the importance of performance..
need I say more.
And I can also confirm on the drone issue that they are %95
drone free, only a slight noise at around 1600-1700rpm while cruising.

After the exhaust was fitted we did another dyno run for 238rwkw,
an improvement of 22rwkw from stock.

Next was the cold air intake, my tuner was supplying this for
$320 which consisted of your basic pvc pipe and pod filter setup.
I chose not to go with the alluminium pipe incase any heat build
up in the aluminium pipe took away from its performance.
This CAI was chosen again based on price, it's a basic setup
that still yields results and as mentioned earlier, I had a budget
to adhere to.

Last but not least the tune, set me back $880, I left it with the
bloke for a whole day and had it dyno'd the final time for 255rwkw.
I must admit I was hoping for around 260rwkw but the car was
down on kw to start with, possibly due to it being so new, I also
have to take into consideration that every dyno is different.
Whats 255kw on his Dyno could be 265 at another shop down
the road, all in all I was impressed with the performance of the car.
It pulls like buggery.

Most importantly my brother-in-laws XR6T is 254rwkw so I'm
ahead by 1rwkw :flipoff:
I chose this tuner after asking around and a few shops, checking
out there website and speaking with the bloke, all seemed well
and he delivered. Even loaned me his work ute to get to and from
home while he had the SS at the shop!

All in all these were my results.

Stock 216rwkw
Exhaust 238rwkw
CAI & Tune 255rwkw

Total price
Exhaust $2300
CAI $320
Tune $880
$3500 for a gain of 39 rwkw
89 dollars a kw :smilesandbanana:

Overall the SS is a beast and I'd recommend these mods to
anyone. If I could do things over I would have fitted a 3 inch
cat back because I reckon the 2.5" xforce cat back is too quiet
for my liking. I would also have waited for an OTRCAI to be
released instead of my pod filter before I had it tuned, just food
for thought for anyone looking at VE mods, from what I know an
OTRCAI should be available from Marrano's in Sydney towards
the end of December. Depending on price I will look at ordering one.

Hopefully some new VE owners find will this info usefull, see you on the road! :driving:

Good write up and explanation of your mods and reasons! :) (One minor flaw, your motor isn't an LS2, it's a L98. :D)

Great write up.

Did you have to modify the cat back to fit up to the longer pacies and new cats?

Cheers

Yup cat back had to be chopped a little to fit, the shop I went to were doing that with all the xforce catbacks they were installing so they knew what they were doing :)

Thanks for the Thread, it was great to see one as concise about a subject that I and I am sure many others are very interested in. It makes the whole picture for me much clearer.

I was interested to read about CAI. I didn't realise that OTR's weren't available for VE's yet? Does anyone know if we can expect to see much difference in rwkw between a pod and otr?

It was also interesting to see that for the most part it doesn't seem to make much difference in rwkw which exhaust combo is fitted. Is this a fair statement or am I being delusional?.....wouldn't be the first time! :)

Cheers

OTR's are available from Russo's (Mickve swears by it), and 12th or 19th December from Marranos

very nice write up ... and informative for a newbie like me ... THANK YOU

is it possible to do these mods to my VE SV6 ?

if yes ... anyone done them by any chance and what additional performance was gained ?

Also, does anyone know a decent place in Sydney that will do these ?

cheers!

Thanks for the post, It's very interesting to see what others do and why. I just wished that I had read this before doing mine.

Well done, car looks great also!

Im sure you could do most of these to an SV6, but I have no clue if the price you pay would be worth the extra performance, or what that extra performance would be. Get a V8 :burnout:

If your in Sydney the best bet would be to contact Marano's.

Great clean looking ride you got there RB.

You should see if you can post up a sound file of the exhaust of yours - I'm sure there's alot of VE owners wanting to hear these cheaper exhaust setups.

Just thought I would add my VE SS mods on a budget story here too, seeing as its General Automotive.

I had a very small budget for my mods and had to choose wisely. In the end I went for a Chipmaster CAI, Lukey 2.5" M/S Cat Back, and Chipmaster Retune. I purchased the CAI from a member here and fitted it myself. I was amazed at the improvement in sound - the induction roar is terrific, but I couldn't feel any difference to the car.

Next was the exhaust. I originally went for a modified 2.5" Lukey System. It had the original Middle section with custom Lukey Hotdogs on the rear. It was very loud and very droney. I put up with it for a few days but in the end it was ruining the car, not improving it. So I took it back to the guy that did it, who guaranteed that there would be no drone. He promptly replaced them with the original Lukey Rear mufflers which have much bigger cans, but appear to maintain a straight through design. The note is vastly improved, with a BMW-esque hard edge to the sound at full noise, and bugger all when driving normally. There is a slight drone at around 1700rpm at full throttle, but its normally not a problem to drop it back a couple when full throttle is needed. The Exhaust set me back $950 with some lovely stainless tips. I hope to get a better video up at a later date but this is best I could do for now.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j184/gonadman2/th_MOV011.jpg (http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j184/gonadman2/?action=view&current=MOV011.flv)

Finally I opted for a PCM Retune at Chipmaster. Dan seems to know his shit, and having been in another Chipmaster tuned car, I decided on him to do the retune. Dan seemed a little disappointed with the fact that I had gone with a 2.5" 'zorst, but mentioned that once the tune was complete I would be able to modify the system for more power without the need for a retune. ie 3" Exhaust with Hi-Flow Cats and Extractors, should see another 10-15RwkW on top of my 2.5" system.

I (regrettably) didn't get a stock dyno run before the Exhaust and CAI, so the base run included those mods already done. I had 214RwkW @4800rpm before the tune. I have seen a stock car make 207RwkW on Dans dyno so I picked up at least 5-10RwkW with the exhaust/CAI but this is speculative. Dan picked up another 22RwkW to push that figure up to 236RwkW, but peak power doesn't tell the whole story. The car is much quicker everywhere - throttle response has improved, even driving below 2000rpm the car feels like it has a bigger motor in it!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j184/gonadman2/P1070520Custom.jpg

To Summarise:
CAI: $300
Exhaust: $950
Retune: $800

So for a grand total of $2050 I had a vastly better car than the one Holden had sent me. I could not believe how much difference doing these mods 'on the cheap' have made. I'm sure that if I had spent $750 on a OTRCAI, and $3.5-$4k on an Exhaust (conservative estimate here) I would have got the 250-260RwkW others have got. That would have pushed the mods up over $5k for a return of maybe 15-25RwkW. I can certainly see and feel more Value in what I have done.

I hope this inspires someone else out there to modify their VE's, I was quite apprehensive at first - with the prices people are charging for VE mods it looked like I was going to be keeping this car stock. After sifting through a lot of crap and having a bit of a dip I was able to get my car where I want it, without having to spend shitloads of money.

He's my story boys, Pacemaker (shorty headers) standard cats D@T 21/2" s/steel system , 4" cold air with K@N pod and edit from Tuna. Before edit with mods 252kwrw after 270kwrw. Engine felt more lively after edit and fuel economy acually improved(edit done at 4000kms). Only regret is exhaust drones on higway at 115kmh. Have recorded on trip from adelaide to barossa 8.9L/100kms(6sp Manual)
