Hi all,
I was tossing around the idea of buying a VS GTS-R HRT optimised version as an investment car. To be locked up untill a few years down the track. For anyone that has done this before i was wondering how it worked out for you whether good or bad. Did you get a return, was it too much hassle. Also brings up the point if the GTS-R is a good investment car. Ive noticed they have gone from around 75k to around 70k in a year, will it continue. If anyone has some thoughts would be good to hear them.

Id be looking at more "racetrack pedigree" cars than that like a Walkinshaw or VN SS Group A.
IMHO, that is necessary for long term (20yrs+) desirability.
Look at XR-on GTs, GTHO, HK-HG Monaros, XU1s, SLR5000, A9X, VK Group A.... they all have one thing in common :)

I have a Ferrari 328 GTB I am planning on selling in the near future. Got it from my dad about 6 or 7 years ago and drive it very rarely. I hope to get around 100k for it when I do decide to sell. Turns a lot of heads and is an extremely nice drive.

I have looked at the idea for some time this is what I came up with
PRO'S:you get to own your peice of history and its nice to look at and MAY go up in value.
CON'S:Theft , insurance/rego etc ,you should drive it occasionaly to keeps the oils going round ,storage, if you are financing then work out the total amout you pay back over the 5 year loan and add the other costs to that and the car may be worth less than what you have paid out.
I would think as an investment your money would be better in a good managed share fund you would probably make more money and have the advantage to sell off part of it if you need some money and it can pay dividends.
Although I would still love a Walky tucked away if I do it it will be for the love of the car but not entirely as an investment.
Cars I can see doing well
Walky
VS GTSR
VN Grp A
VL Grp A
VK Grp A Formula blue
any of the old brocks etc
Good luck just do your sums and see if its worth it to you.

I was looking at a VN GRP A in Unique Cars today for $70K as an investment......... you can write off depreciation through a company and be CGT exempt when it becomes time to sell.
Downside is I need to build a garage at the office so I have somewhere to store it.

I remember reading once a well known, successful stock broker (I believe it was anyway) saying that cars do not make a good investment, because you cannot reliably predict the future value, and there is too much risk of something happening to them...eg: rusting out, garage burns down, rats eat them, theft etc.
Some of the recent values being paid are really just a blip on the radar due to a booming economy, leaving some people with a shedload of cash. When the market drops, those cars will drop a lot in value.
If you want a good investment, get a balanced portfolio of shares, cash and property, either directly yourself or through a managed fund, as you will get both capital growth and dividends.

Good luck mate - your accountant must like pushing his { your } luck.
How can you write it off through a company and then expect to pay no CGT.

Exactly mate - as soon as things take a dive the first things that get off loaded are the toys.......:bawl::bawl::bawl:
I still think that the VN Group A is the sleeper in the current market - and there are very few coming on the market.
2-3 years ago you couldn't get 30K for a low km car.

???? How do you claim depreciation on a vehicle that old & even if you did, isn't the idea for the value to appreciate.... good luck with your tax office audit:)

Things to consider with buying a car as an investment are:
1. Is the gain taxable?
2. Is interest on loan deducible?
3. Are other costs such as storage, servicing and insurance deductible?
4. How much it will be worth in the future?
5. How do the numbers stack up compared to other investments?
6. Is the purchase about money or lifestyle? If it’s about money check other investment choices.
7. Its best not let a car sit around for long periods of time. Cars need to be driven occasionally.
For 1, 2 , 3 I would assume no.

I've got some from the Classic Adelaide Rally where my dad drove it. Bad wear and tear those hilly climbs are. Did a lot of damage.
Will post them as soon as I can find them.

Anyone reckon VE Walkinshaw enhanced car like the one in SC would appreciate, or would it have to be race proven first. I can just imagine people buying a VE giving it to Walkinshaw then putting it in the garage for 20years.
Including myself...

 hardly wot you would call a collectors item, there are only 10s of thousands of them which could be given to walkinshaw, they wont exactly be unique.....
