I went to barbeque on the weekend and as usual the conversation amongst the guys turned to Cars. Most of the Guys are either Falcon men or Commodore men (Majority were Commodore men of course).

After much discussion there seemed to be an agreement that the New Mazda 6 (due in Feb-Mar08) and to a lesser extent the new Mondeo will take sales off the Commodore and Falcon.

They are both bigger than the models they replace and are not that much smaller than a Commodore/Falcon.

I stand to be corrected but we seem to think that when comparing the soon to be released Mazda 6 Luxury with a Commodore SV6 (They are both about the same price) the Mazda seems better value.

Commodore SV6 Advantage:

Power (195kw vs 125kw)
More Space

Mazda 6 Advantage:

Leather seats
Climate Control
Curtain airbags
LCD Display (similar to SSV)
Xenon headlights
Superior fuel economy (8.4l/100km vs 11l/100km)
Japanese quality
Keyless entry
Keyless ignition
Front parking sensors
Rear parking sensors

Some may think the Calais would be a better comparison but the Calais is at least another $5k more and still does not have all the features of the Mazda.

I really hope Holden has something up there sleave for the release of the VF in the next year or so or we may see there sales dropping further especially if Fuel prices keep rising.

What do you guys think?

still not in the same class.

gotta make it apples with apples.

mazda 6
Accord Euro (140kw new model out in jul 08)
Mondeo
VW Jetta
Passat
Subaru Liberty

These are all in the same class.

If ur thinkin SV6 u gotta look at
New falcon (08)
Mitubishi 380
New 2008 V6 Accord 208kw V6 standard (march 08)
Toyota aurion

Don't forget that is the current pricing, not the pricing of the new vehicles and also don't forget about import tariffs. I think they will be at the higher end and mazda's don't have enough appeal to take sales away from commodore or falcon owners.

Also most SV6's are fleet cars anyway, i would prefer a commodore i don't have to pay for over a mazda.

Mondeo's are crap, end of story.

Thats true but if you have $40k to spend then the customer would look at both cars and pick the one he thinks is better value.

Although they are not the same class in size they are in price.

Can you tow a boat or caravan with a (front drive) aurion or mazda6? Then I don't think we'll ever say goodbye to commodores and falcons.

Must admit, looking at the photos of that white Mazda 6 in Friday's Herald Sun car guide it is a pretty classy looking unit, I will give it a serious look next year. Got a great write up as well.

good point indeed! most of the med cars can tow 1500kg with a trailer with brakes! I wouldnt want to tow much with a fwd car!

Yep, the new Mondeo is a very big car, almost the same size as a Commodore or Falcon. I think there will be a lot of people who look at cars like that and the Mazda 6 and who aren't really "car people" who will decide to buy it simply because you get almost as much space, probably more equipment, and save on fuel.

You'd be amazed what people will cross-shop when buying a new car. A girl I work with just bought a Rav4 after considering a Mazda 3 or a Liberty as her other two options. another guy I bought with bought a Mazda CX-7 after also considering a Prius. I don't think it's really the case anymore where people go "right, I'm going to buy a medium sedan" and then look around to see who sells one. Heck, the only other car I briefly considered when getting my SS was the Mazda 6 MPS...

Looking at getting one for the mrs but the turbodiesel model and we like what we see.
As I will be getting a VE SS-V wagon next year she is getting a new Mondeo (if she likes it after a test drive) to replace her 99 Camry.

Nope, don't think so, pricing is up on Ford's website if your interested, top of the range XR5 is just over $40K, with the base model costing a smidgen under $30K, and another 2 models in between these price limits.

Personally, I think they are an exeptional car and it won't take long for them to prove themselves over here.
