View Full Version : Stall Converter in a daily driver?

I've been reading up and trying to understand the idea behind stall converters after untying my head from the knots of numbers and diff ratios I summized that they are only good for standing starts. If this is correct would it be worthwhile chucking a 2200 on a daily driver or would the money be better spent elsewhere. I'm trying to (slowly) build a sleeper so I'm looking for performance without noise or visible mods. The transmission seemed like an obvious place to start as I can't see the cops ripping out my auto at an RBT any time soon.
Would it be better to use one in conjunction with a 3.47 diff or 3.9 or will I end up just spinning my wheels every time the lights turn green. Are there any other options for tightening up the auto box on a VX SSII?

Cheers in advance...merry christmas!

Stall converter's are used to make an Auto more drivable when you have something like a big cam installed, otherwise it will surge something fierce unlike a manual where you can control the clutch/rpm's as you drive around carparks.

I have a 2800rpm stall converter in my XR6T. On the street it didnt feel too different from the standard converter. Mine only slips when your on the brakes and loading it up. Otherwise it drives pretty much normal on light throttle openings. If you in performance drive (tiptronic) and in say 3rd gear driving at around 50km/h and load it up, this is where the car pulls much better, or 4th gear on freeway etc. But then again, you could always just kick it down a gear.

All in all, Id say diff gears will be better, I reckon in your auto go 3.73 and it will smoke most cars off the line (and thereafter) without the converter.

years ago I had a VS V8 Auto with 3.9 gears in it. I used to tear away from other 5.0V8's People couldnt work out why. Then when they noticed mine always changed up earlier they picked them.

A 2800 stall and some 3.9's would be a great improvement over stock and would net a larger gain down the 1/4 than just diff gears alone (you probably won't notice the 2800 much either). It will also smooth out the gear changes, so you won't be snapping sideways as much when you hit 2nd.

If you want to take off quickly from a standing start without smoking the tyres you can always feed the throttle and then floor it (kinda feels like a slingshot and you get used to it after a while).

Higher Stall Converters are also great whilst moving as they allow your engine to get to the power zone a hell of a lot quicker and they also provide shift extension when changing gears.

I also wouldn't go any bigger than a 3000 if it's a daily driver, it'll feel like a pain in the arse until you get used to the 'loooseness' and it will cost you alot more in fuel if you do any city driving. Good luck!

what looseness do you refer to ? Mine doesnt feel loose at all, if anything I would describe it as tighter. the car feels more responsive reven just chugging around, more throttle response.

Ever driven a car with a stallie higher than 2800? You'll know what i mean pretty quickly!!

I probably have not driven a car with a bigger stally than that. So describe what you mean looseness? You do mean tap throttle and baaahhhhhhh!!! Noisy? Or lack of instant response? lazy feeling?

Me thinks you shoul be getting in on our group buy ......

Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=88216)

Start with the diff gears 3.9's and if you need more punch maybe look at a converter.

cheers - Matthew

My own experience with stalls is quite the opposite ,while big stalls suit big cams, imo 2800 to 3K stalls should be made mandatory in all Commodore 8's, if for no other reason than outright safety.
Unless provoked they offer superior traction capabilities, on both wet and dry roads, when coupled with diff gears the resulting near full second off your 1/4 mile time is but an added bonus imho

I've currently got one unopened VY Calais sitting in the driveway....Mafless / 3K stall and 3.7 diff gears......prossibly one of the nicest driving VY's I've driven...an I've had a few ;).....along with Converters....2800 / 3000 /3600/ 4000 / 4600 / 5000 and a couple of 6000rpm jobs

why does such a stall 2800-3000 make it safer? more tractable?

Does a stall converter make you lose RWKW?

drove around with a 4500rpm Stall in my old VL Calais Turbo. used to work a treat with the GT35/40R! not too hard on the street, but then again, was never really on boost unless i was giving it assholes!

Kinda hard to describe, it smoothes things out between gear changes (great in the wet at part throttle), if you drive sedately enough it also gets off the line alot more smootly. Of course if you just floor it off the line everytime it'll stall up and smoke the tyres. More noticable as the stall speed gets higher.

A little bit, but they multiply torque.

Do a quick search for some more info, there are some really detailed threads about hi-stall converters on here.
