My ve gts has 1100klms on the clock and is using 20-21 litres per 100klms mostly driving in the burbs, does this seem a lot? My vz maloo had a tune and the same kind of use would use 14-15 litres per 100klms. Seems a huge difference. Is this simply a case of heavier car/tight new motor or is my car running rich for some reason?

Sounds like the engine is still very tight but after a few thousand k's it should run in nicely. Also do more highway runs when you can or chuck it on a rolling road (dyno) to speed up the running in. If I recall correctly after 20,000k's the ecu releases the full potential of the engine. Although I might be wrong cos I forget. :-)

mate get some highway k's up & give it a floggin, dont thrash it just give it a work out, they luv it. mines got 12.300k's gets about 15,16 round town, last trip to rosebud & back with 4 wheels in boot averaged 11.1 for whole day, just dont baby it

I average about 11.1 after 40000. Freeway running at or near speed limit gets me around 9.4

With the SS i get 17-18lts/100km around the city. If I baby it and not drive hard at all I get 15-16 around the city.

On the highway i get 11-12.

Just for comparison purposes, I've done 15000Km in my VE now, and of that 4500Km was from Brisbane to Melbourne and back, averaged 10.7 Litres/100km on that trip.

Don't mind me, I'm just jealous...

But I'd be more worried about depreciation !! Assuming a 65K-odd car drops 10K, maybe 15K in the first year (?), that's like $200-300/week.

So if you're using $8 to $10 bucks worth of fuel more than you thought, per 100k's, unless you're doing 2000-3000k's a week, the 'ol depreciation is costing you faaaaaar more.

I wouldn't sweat it for those few bucks on that basis. Go enjoy !!!

It's like worrying about a mozzie while a shark bites off your leg.

Doesnt the GTS have the LS2 motor? Wont be as economical as the L98 I would think.

I get 10.4 if I'm on the freeway and 11 around town. The key is to use the torque and shift to the right gear at around 2,000rpm. I've got nearly 20,000k's on her now.

If you feel the need to thrash it every now and then, you'll get higher figures.

07 ve ss manual stock.
i get about 16l/100 around town or so just depends who drives it, if its me it goes up. after just doing a round trip of 2800klm to melbourne and back the trip down averaged about 10.5l/100 all 114kph in nsw then 104kph in vic which is about a third of the total distance. While down there i threw the car on the dyno for a few runs to try some settings but no real tuning. For the return trip i put in a starting mafless tune im working on and made the trip back to nsw at 104kph and about 9.7l/100, then once in nsw i bumped up to 114kph and about 10.5l/100 for the overall after the 900+klm trip home. the car was loaded with myself, partner, two kids and a boot full of luggage.
The mafless tune i installed had not had any tweaking of the afr's and bye no means was anywhere near spot on at any point of the ve table so i doubt it was any better but at full throttle where it made more power and earlier in the entire rev range. Once tuned in i see no reason why it wont be running in the high 8's or low 9's at 100kph or in the 9's at 110-120pkh.
In my maloo befor i turbo'd it there was about .7l to 1.2l/100klm difference between 105 and 115kph.

Sounds a big jump, as though your motor is still tight. I had 3 LS1s before this L98 and even though it's now done over 8,000km and should be fairly loose I find it tends to be about 1 l per 100km worse on fuel around town for the same average speeds. However, on cruise on freeway it's about the same. All readings with tune/exhaust/air.

If you are refering to my car wonky it is a dead stock car that had its 3k service done befor we left. the city consumption was based off what i had seen once while i was driving it, i tend to drive it quite hard in the first couple of gears, its hard not to when your used to a turbo'd ls1. i asked my wife last night but she said she never changes the display form the speedo function. when she gets here soon ill check the readings again.

Take note of your average speed for the economy figures, makes for better comparison with others.
I'm on 38-39km/hr and getting 15.5l/100km. Have 21,000km up exhaust, CAI, tune.

It will slowly get better and better ... mine was around 18-19 when new ... now it is possible to get 12s in traffic and 9-10 on the freeway as an average if you drive nice ... I have seen as low as 7.5/100 holding 100km/h on a flat bit of freeway with a full car ... it is quite strange but I cannot replicate this always ... sometimes its low and sometimes its higher (8.5-9) ... same conditions or better ... why is this?

The are some pretty extreme differences in some figures being offered in a couple of posts here. Anyone claiming (and believing it!) that they get 9-10-11 litres per 100km in traffic obviously have a different type of "traffic" offered in Sydney.

Even though the Holden/HSV fuel readout is relatively dodgy in terms of being a scientific method to get fuel consumption averages....at least reading out the average speed with the fuel consumption average is valuable as a comparison tool. Although highway fuel consumption in manual v8's in 6th gear is actually quite good......

Fudging the figures is easy. Here's how to impress your sceptical V8 hating wife. Flog the car around town, drive it like you stole it.....the readout goes off the charts....Park the car, reset the fuel consumption readout. She drives 2km down the road for milk and marvels how the big v8 manages to "only average" less than 12L/100. You boast that buying a big v8 was the smartest environmental acquisition since selling the Prius....(although she'll wonder why she's filling the tank up every three days!!) ha ha ha ha. Because the fuel consumption readout only averages across a ten minute or so time frame...short spurts of fuel guzzling acceleration isn't effectively accounted for....yet the fuel bowser doesn't tell lies.

So before you guys marvel how your 18,00Kg 6.0 litre VE V8 is averaging PRIUS like figures around town...think again, Mr. Holden has calibrated the fuel consumption readout to make you a happy customer....

Keep driving happy customers

FWIW

07 VE SS-V M6 6,000kms, 3" catback

Around town (mainly Sydney peak hour): 14.5 - 15.5L/100kms

Freeway / Country roads (110 6th gear): 10L/100kms

I don't think I am a particularly hard driver. Tend to take it out to around 3,000-3,500rpm when accelerating and then cruise in 4th, 5th or 6th. The heel/toe blipping the throttle going down the gears is probably my downfall - love the sound too much !!!!! :yup:

Hmmm, 650 kays travelled.. 10.5 litres /100km on the readout out and about 68 litres of fuel - mean that Mr Holden is not lying...

And yes, that is with an SSV, 6ltr with Sunroof and DVD and a boot full of clubs and clothes weighing it down... And 18,700 on the clock.. Manual...

Juduscious use of the throttle and highway running can get some amazing figures in these V8's.. I have been down as low as 8's on a highway run - but overtaking kills that....

 mine too... Love to blip and change back.. It matches engine speed to road speed, so it's a smoother downchange.

Thought I'd add my piece - VE SS Auto; CAI; 30,000km on clock. Highway low 9's; around Brisbane 14-18

Thanks for everyone's feedback on fuel consumption, I wasn't asking how to acheive low fuel usage though just wondering if 21 litres per 100k seems over the top. I wouldn't care if I used 30 litres per 100k as long as the figure was in line with other users. I think I will just put it down to new motor as I first thought. Seems no one is aware of any specific issue with ve hsvs. As far as babying my car to acheive low fuel use HELL NO!!! Like the dude said near the start of the thread about shark something or other

That is roughly the difference I have noticed with the VE over the VY but as I now do more short city trips and find it takes longer to get a decent reading when I do a 100K+ KM on a highway/toll way runs. Then again the VE is an Auto where as the VY was a manual.

As long as you enjoy it while you’re burning the fuel up I figure who really cares. After all it is one of the only remaining vices I still have. I must admit I give the VE a squirt more frequently than the VY. There is just something about the VE that makes me do it……… honest officer :nyuk::nyuk::nyuk:

Does seem a tad on the high side but is dependent on how you drive it. What is the average speed? I have heads and cam and 4200 converter and use that around the suburbs and I'm not driving with fuel consumption in mind. Freeway around 11-12L/100km. Town more like 18-20L/100 - very rarely see worse than this.

This was some time ago, just after i got off a freeway. Was actually a bit lower before i took pic, with speeds around 110 and not really driving for economy, Have noticed that I am generally getting better economy these days.

city driving avg speed 38-40KPH avg fuel 14.5L/100K

by the pump and odo reading and a calculator 14.4L/100K

as for 7l/100K press ther reset in 6th on the freeway doing 100 or so and sure it will read 7 for a few k's but that isnt real world test, if you want to impress people with your fuel figures get a 4 cyl turbo diesel , but if you buy a 6ltr who cares about its economy

Well my SSV M6 has done 5000k now and i get an average in Brisbane of between 14.4 - 15 and that has been over the last month since i last reset it. WHen it was new though it was always in the 16-18 mark.

My figure was gained by resetting computer near Bulli Tops on an uphill run. The picture was taken when I pulled up at Albion Park Shops. My usual average is 11.1 but I dont travel in city traffic. On a drive to Newcastle I got 8.4 on the freeway between Sydney and Newcastle with an average speed a bit over 110. I dont drive for economy, I drive to enjoy.
