On my GTS the leather steering wheel on just about warn through where I put my right hand when driving. The rest of it is fine. I use armorall wipes/leather wipes on the rest of the car interior but you can not use it on steering wheels.

Is there a product you can use that is not sticky or slippery that does the same job as armorall type products to stop it happening again?

The other thing is I do race the car on the circuit and I was wondering if I get it wrapped professionally with Suede.

I presume the after market steering wheels like the one below are really illegal and not airbag compliant. This is just a sample one after a two minute search.

you can try leather conditioners, they arent greasy once theyve sat for a while. try 303 aerospace protectant, gives a nice finish and has no silicone, which is what makes armorall so slippery and greasy. but with anything let it sit overnight before you drive it, otherwise the product will be on your hands instead of doing its job. but neither of these will stop it wearing, only slow it down.

having it wrapped in suede will render it illegal/unroadworthy, as will replacing it with a non-airbag wheel. plus youll have a dash light on from the moment you disconnect the airbag wiring. any auto trimmer will be able to rewrap it for you, with stock or coloured leather, or you can buy a new one from places like emtech, holmart, american autos etc.

I went to a shop today and he said he can wrap the existing wheel with suede quite easily. Have to take the wheel off but that is no biggie.

Other than the legal side of things why would suede be an issue. I felt the material today and it seemed fine to have on the wheel. Not much different to other products.
Why would it be illegal as you can go and buy those covers from shops that you slip over the wheel. They should be illegal as most of the time they half come off while driving.

Anyone actually put suede onto their steering wheel before.
The bloke said he can pack it with materials to make it a good size for my hands so it is really comfy.

im not sure to be honest, especially as it gives a better grip than leather or vinyl. i just remember reading that it is against ADRs for a registered car.

I got the price back from the bloke doing the steering wheel cover replacement job in black suede leather. $190. Not too bad I thought as it will be custom stitching.
I will post some picks up when it is done. Be about mid Jan as he is flat out.

That way I do not need to care about looking after it. I contacted the local Motor vehicle registry and their records do not say anything about suede leather not being allowed. It is only leather just like what is on there now. Just a different finish.

It should be good for the circuit anyhow.

Thanks for the feedback on the care products.
