View Full Version : Would you stop driving cause of FUEL Cost??

This is pretty basic. And really only to the guys/girls that drive there cars everyday.

With fuel prices going up & getting close to $100 to fill up.
If & when fuel goes up over the $2.00lts mark for 98 fuel.
Would you stop driving your car to work & during the week??
And only drive it on the weekends?? Have a smaller car for day to day

Its a bit different to the guys that work away. As they would only drive there
cars when they are back home. So they might only be driving them around
1week in every month. Depends on what rooster you are on..

With the extra financial pressure of interest rates & day to day living.
Having $100 - $150 a week for fuel might be a tight squeeze on the budget..

We have got 2 LS1 powered cars. Our fuel bill for the week can range from
$175 - $250 a week... And its not going to get any better..

Will be interested in peoples thoughts..

well i was thinking about selling my deadly treadley not so long ago but the way things are going i might have to keep it for going to uni and back etc. My car is only a V6 but i am lucky to see 460-480KM to a tank of 98 and last time i filled up it hit $95 and hadn't even clicked yet! not good for a uni student.....

I remember it was supposed to hit $2.00 before Christmas last year....then it went down.

Thats not to say it is going to go down this time, just an observation.

dont really have a choice. people will still need to get to work and public transportation for a lot of people is not available.

If you are worried about the cost of fuel I think a second car would be counter productive.
The extra costs would probably be more than fuel use of the V8

Rough figures only

Extra rego $10/week
Insurance $10/week
Repayments $50/week

Would want to be economical to outweigh the added cost of an extra vehicle.

I'd reduce spending in other areas like alcohol, take away food etc. Unless public transport is improved it's pretty hard to get to work. Personally, if I caught public transport to work it would take 2 - 2.5hrs each way. That's 4 - 5 hours each day. Currently by car it's 1.5 hours each day.

I'm surprised that the governments are expanding our road system and talking about putting tunnels and not investing in public transport.

The way fuel is at the moment I would start catching the train to work if I had to drive my car to work everyday.

Lucky for me I have a company vehicle too which I fill up 2 times a week. Get around 550-600 k's out of a tank. Its a V6. Now if I was doing that in my car I'd be filling up more than 2 times a week I'd imagine. Plus I'd be putting in 98RON priced fuel not 91RON priced fuel. Yaiiiicks!!!

So yeah train for me, as much as it would suck.

I remember many years ago the same fear was had about hitting the $1.00 mark. I think people will just make adjustments here and there if it is absolutly necessary to drive to work.

pete there is another thread here about fuel price increase and selling our v8s
http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=88134&highlight=time+sell+V8

and i will drive my V8 to work all day everyday no matter the price of fuel.
granted its on a novated lease but the maintenance and fuel comes out post tax so its still hitting my back pocket.

love it too much to even think of putting it as a weekend car.
if anything i would buy a 4wd to tow jetski instead of using old mans but they drink more than my car unless its diesel

Id stop driving to work if public transport was an option, but melbournes public transport is WAY over its limit during normal peak hours (i dont care what the pollies say, it is) and even then it would mean 2 trains and a bus, which is way too much time to an already long trip (50min drive)

currently i wouldnt stop driving at all, it is expensive, but you've gotta use it.
untill i can produce my own fuel somehow i'll keep driving everyday.

just try and cut down on random pointless driving adventures

The Coupe 4 averages about 20 - 22L / 100km ... way too much, so it stays in the garage now and I drive an SS-V instead, it averages a much better 16L / 100km.

:D

Yes ... I'm being a smart arse. No ... I wouldn't stop driving, I don't care how much fuel is.

I actually try and fill up on the most expensive day and the most expensive petrol station I can find with the SSV. then again, I am not paying for the fuel, so it doesn't matter.

love the company fuel card...

haha yes, i am in the exact same boat... company fuel card FTW! I guess for a lot of people it is not only the increasing pressure on petrol prices... its the double whammy with the way that interest rates have been going of late... throw in the fact that the average house price in Perth is now near on half a millon $$$'s... it just really licks arse trying to get you foot in the independence door...

/end rant

I honestly believe that fuel prices now influence numbers on cruises / socials etc. all of a sudden you have to contemplate is it really worth the $50  it hasnt stopped myself to date...

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but over here I pay £1.09 a litre for 98 RON fuel. That's $2.52 in your money. I don't know if your litres are different to ours (like the US is) but it's still quite high, I think you'll agree. Especially since I only get 15mpg. :)

not becuase of fuel prices, but recently ive moved within riding idstance of work. so i ride on my pushy. its about a 10minute ride. spend longer than that waiting for the bastard of a 308 in my ute to warm up before it will drive.

so it hasnt really slowed down or affected my driving on the weekends beacsue im saving nearly 100 / week beacsue i dont have a drive like i used to (30min each way)

Forget fuel prices! With Labor ratifying Kyoto, I wouldn't be surprised to see emission based taxes on the agenda within 12 - 24 months. I work for an Irish company so have a lot of contact with people in Dublin. They just introduced a tax over there that costs 2000 Euro (that's over AUD$3000!!!) per year if you own a V8. Apparently they're not the first country in the UK/Europe to do so...

I'm happy to pay whatever is necessary for fuel. We've had it easy for far too long with fuel prices. But these sort of taxes are rediculous! I'd pay up though... I'm one of the lucky ones - not affected overly by increases in living expenses. But the working class will struggle, and that's sad!

I also had a thought about the govenment doing something like that as well.

But it might be based on the official fuel usage figures..
No tax to cars that use under 10lt per 100klms
Tax a certain % for cars that are between 10 - 14 ltrs per 100klms
And a higher tax to cars that use over 14lts per 100klms..

With all the talk around with greenhouse gasses, somehow they will think it will help. :vpo:

We done a round trip yesterday of around 200ks. Which worked out at around
$50 of fuel. In half a day ! Payed $1.54lt for 98
For that i could get that for a whole week of driving...
But it wouldnt be as enjoyable as driving the R8...

Please tell me how this is going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wouldn't it be more productive to put a levy on cars that emit the highest level of gases? Such as 4.8L Patrols and V8 Landcruisers.

I read somewhere when the 6.0L came out that it used less fuel and put out less emissions than an ecotec V6!!! So let's just wait and see who gets slugged with the tax, cos I bet it won't be V6's.

Proberly it wont...
But we are talking about a Government department that will come up with a policy here...

And more than likely the tax will be on the vehicle rego..
Either way we will be slugged

With regards to registration...

I am one person with two cars.

Only registered to me. I am the only driver of both, EVER.

As it is impossible to drive two cars at once, how is it justified that I must pay two full registration amounts? Nobody has ever been able to clearly explain this. Registration should be PERSON based with nominated cars assigned to them. I know there's a logistical nightmare of not being able to necessarily proove both your cars weren't on the road at the same time, but my point is still valid.
