As from June 08 a new regulation will apply in New Zealand with regard to car noise regulation. The regulation is primarily targetting ricers but I know that cars with modified exhausts will get caught up in it as well.
The regulation covers all cars imported after June 08 which will require to meet 90db if the car is less than 20 yrs old or 95db if older.
From my observation during testing last year, most typical LSx big bore systems came in at 100db.
This means that effectively any car fitted with a modified exhaust will require a test to be performed at around $175 minimum in order for a warrant of fitness to be issued. A sticker is applied to the exhaust to say its compliant.
Personally, it does not worry me as my R8 has a stock system and it tested at about 89db in that same test, so it's a matter for other NZ Holden enthusiasts to be concerned about.
My Corvette has side pipes which are shockingly noisy at 104db so I need to do something about those.

Your corvette and any of us with noisy exhausts now should be if it only applies to cars coming in after Jun 08

Sorry, I should have added that if you present a car for a WOF and it has a modified exhaust it will be judged upon a comparison of whether it is equal or less than a standard noise from that make and model car. If the WOF tester deems that it does not meet that criteria, you will be green stickered to have a noise test done by a LVVTA member and if it complies, great. If not, you will have to change it until it does comply. 90db is not very loud, I assure you. Those old standard exhausts I have stashed in the rafters may have a market after all.
What are the AUS noise levels?

Passed you in the weekend Thumper, I was heading out of NP just North of Urenui. Were you on a run, lots of other vettes, then a few minutes later a few stangs?
I'm also keen to know what the level is in Aus as I have been thinking about changing my VE exhaust (when the drone issue is finally fully sorted).

Pretty sure most/all states are 90dB.
Measuring methods/rpm/location vary state to state.

Yeah, we were on our annual whitebait run to mokau. Weather was ok on the way up but deteriated on the way back.
Here's the LTSA link http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/rules/q-and-a/vehicle-equipment-amendment-2007.html
Once again, it's the ricers that have stuffed it up for everyone.

Corvette with side pipes .. nice. Only thing better would be if it was a chrome-bumper model!! :)

Someone made a valid comment in the paper the other day: there are bikes out there, primarily Harleys, which are a lot noisier AND annoyingly so, than cars. The whining noise generated by ricies with their funnel exhaust are more distracting than loud....

It's a lot eaiser to change a Harley exhaust for rego than a car exhaust. That's why there are so many loud Harleys around :)
It cost me $100 for a stock cat back system, $50 to change it and another $50 to change it again:1peek:
PS: I never did take the stock cat back system home from the exhaust shop with me.
