The other day I went to this crappy tyre shop and was asking about rims and stuff. He told me that the side walls of 22s crack due to not having the correct load rating.

Is this right? I was only killing time so I wont go there to buy rims from the shop, but it has me thinking

Perhaps with the wrong air pressure they might.. or maybe the brand of tyre may have something to do with it.. Needless to say, there are quite a few vehicles (Hummers, Hilux's, Navara's etc) getting around with 24' rims, and dont seem to have any issues...

Surely if people are getting around with 24's with no issues, then 22's you would assume would fair better.. That was my point, if you read my post correctly... :flipoff:

My last set of 19's cracked badly around the sidewalls and they were only 19's but I put it down to a sh1t tyre (Wanlis).Hummers etc also have a larger profile SUV 22" etc tyre so the more sidewall is a bonus.I wouldn't want the ride od a 22" tyre with very little sidewall.

Definitely sounds like some dodgy brand if the tyre sidewalls started to crack !

FWIW- They not only have 24" but you can get 26", 28" and 30" rims in the US now. Think the 30" are something like $30,000 a set ! Kerb a wheel and you would have to take out a new mortgage !!!

He was trying to tell me that people with 22s dont really drive on them that much. He also treated me like I was an idiot who just wanted big rims. He carried on about coils overs, much taller they were then my 18s and they would rub.

Too often people treat you like a muppet because they assume you dont know stuff about cars! It really pisses me off.

Instead of carrying on he should of just said, sorry cant help you. Some people should just stick to putting tyres on standard cars

Ummmm...but he's right. To fit 22's, you'll definately need coil-overs because the wheel + tire WILL be too large and WILL rub on your struts (and on your gaurds).

To fit 22's to a VT-VZ and have it anywhere even remotely close to low will require coil overs and serious guard work to make them fit. Also, you'll need to find tires that will fit AND be correctly load rated for a commodore (ie. 91+).

In conclusion, just get 20's like i did.

Were you seriously considering 22's for your VY or were you just curious & asking him some general questions about rims ? Either way it sounds like he was a complete tool so saves you having to go back to that shop !

Just to give you an idea of what you're in for with 22's, the most easily available load rated 22" tyre is a 255/30/22. Now, the largest OEM size tire fitted to the VT-VZ series was a 245/35/19. Here's some specs:

245/35/19:

Sidewall: 86mm
Diameter: 655mm
Circumference: 205cm

Compare this to a 255/30/22:

Sidewall: 76mm
Diameter: 711mm
Circumference: 223cm

This raises two point:

1. Good luck making them fit
2. Using a 255/30/22, you're increasing the rolling diameter by 56mm over the largest size factory fitted to your series. Legally you're allowed to increase by a maximum of 15mm, so you're increasing it almost 4 times the allowable amount.

The smallest 22" tire that is produced in the world is a 235/30/22 which is still increasing diameter by over 40mm.

Or, you could get a nice set of 20's. I chose to run 245/30/20's which fit absolutely perfectly (They are 1.4% taller then the stock 19's) and diameter is exactly the same.

iv got a vy maloo with 20`s runnin 225/35/20 tyres.

never had a problem with the side wall. then again the tread only lasts 10 - 20,000.

ls1 + ute + sideways = no tyres.

my mate`s dad has 22`s on a supercharged ve maloo thats a daily driver and had no problems with side wall crackin.

i think if you get cheap tyres, dont expect too much!

just remember you get wat you pay for!

So you were just in there killing time, holding him up from customers that might have been there to buy?
Sounds like he found a good answer to get you out the shop and stop wasting his time...

I'm serious about 22s and I wont be returning. He had never even heard of Verde rims. His answer was, you get them from tempe

Ok, well then you'll also "seriously" get defected by the cops, over and over. It's not hard for them. If they're in a bad mood, they walk up to your car, read the tyre size off your sidewall and there you go, instant defect.

VE's are fine to run 22's, VT-VZ cannot legally run 22's. Period.

I understand that I cant legally put them on my car. I'm not saying you are wrong, why are you getting so wound up about this?

Its not your car, so why do you care? The question was about side walls cracking not whether or not they can be put on legally or not!

Thankyou for your knowledge of the VIC Roads!
