How do you know the difference between a 253, 308 or 350?

I have a motor but was wondering if there are any numbers which will indicate the type of engine I have.

there should be a stamp on the block near where the heads bolt on, should say the size

The only thing I can see is H17

what colour is it?

red motor

number on the back of block near the heads is 3970010 & K6
number on the side of block is H 17

found the statesman prefix of 11 followed by the QU which is for 350 chev.

the 350 doesnt look anything like a 253 or 308 if its holden it will have 308 stamped on the block inbetween the welch plugs.passengers side.
