The first Commodore we were lucky enough to get in SA was the VX series, there are a few about, we had one for 3 years and now my mate has bought one.

Claimed power was 225kW at the fly but I have never seen a VX in South Africa put this power out, all have exceeded this in same cases massively and on a lot of differant dynos.

My old VX put out 279kW at the fly(dynoed at 33 000kms) but then it was suffering badly when I sold it at 100 000 km's, lot of rattle at high RPM.

Friends VX with 125 000km's on the dyno did 264 kW at the fly on one dyno, 252 kW at the fly on another. Revs sweetly to the limiter.

Both cars are stockish, no edit, mine had fliter exhaust, no cats and a UNICHIP(yeh I know got it with it so), Mate has removed the gause around the MAF, also exahust and filter, both were/are A4's.

Didnt take my car to strip but he was run 13.9 in his car....

Maybe the power outputs were conservative or South African spec cars received some "tuning"

Thought what interesting is that both cars in POWER mode emit a lot of black smoke....which doesnt happen in normal mode, anyone want to hazard why?

When you say dyno you obviously mean engine dyno as you are quoting figures 'at the flywheel' which means engines would have had to be removed from car.
If they were on a chassis dyno, they are very happy figures for stock engines!

Black smoke means very rich AFR's.

I would expect lower power figures in South Africa due to the higher altitudes. Maybe Holden has tried to offset this by boosting the power of the cars sent over there?

Was wondering the same thing, especially as all the VX's seems to run very rich at high revs, perhaps a method of compensating for thinner air....

Happy dyno and a std VX tune does go very rich after 4000 rpm

How did you work out the engine output? Multiply by 40% drive train loss??

thats a bit much. Maybe 25%

Stock they punch out around 180rwkw.

40% drive train loss??

My Alloytec V6 is 35% loss.

My last VX SS A4 also did 13.9 down the 1/4 when it was completely stock with 70k on it so id guess thats about normal ?
