View Full Version : Difference between VU and VY utes
Just a quick question that I couldn't find the answer for with a search. Other than the obvious internal and external styling changes, what were the major changes between the VU and VY utes.
I am in the market for an SS ute of the VU/VY era and wanted to know what I'd be missing out on in the VU.

6 stacker CD, the revised engine which hopefully shouldnt have oil consumption problems even though i would have thought most of the VUs would be fixed by now anyway. Other than outside body panels and a whole interior re-fit they are basically the same, obviously they are rated at 235KW rather than 225KW not sure whether that is to do with exhaust or tune or something else but if you have mods planned it wont make any difference anyway. i cant think of any other differences.

catback exhausts are different, CAI's are a bit different from memory too.
Interior electrics are different.

Strut tower brace on SII's and revised PCV system on SII VY's.

Front Panels
Dash and Centre Console
More power in stock form, once tuned no difference
6 Stacker CD in VY, single in VU
To drive they are exactly the same, I do think the VY dash has much better fitment and feels and looks better built than the VT/X/U dash however.
Thanks for the help guys. I will be chucking on a simple cat back exhaust and getting a tune so hopefully power wise there wont be too much difference. The 6 stacker CD doesn't phase me much either as I will be moving my car-pc over to the ute once I get it. In that respect the VU might actually be better as the double din opening is a lot more mod friendly than the custom molding I would have to do in the VY.
What about the trip computer etc, more features on the VY I'm taking it?

I dont think either have the 3 window trip computer standard, i know my VU SS only had average fuel, distance left, trip counter, maybe something else but not even as much as my old VN Calais.
My mates VY SS has the 3 window computer with heaps of stuff, but others i have seen dont.
Also the double din is just as easy in the vy to accept aftermarker units, there are special panels available that sit around an aftermarket unit to fit it properly in the slightly larger than double din hole... if that makes sense. Bottom line doesnt need custom work.

Did the VU SS come with an electric drivers seat standard like the VY?

yeah it did . The two are very similar spec wise , but the VY seems more current inside and out ,and with better general build, fit and finish .definately worth the extra spend imo

just hold the up and down arrows on the trip computer while starting and the VU will have plenty more options available, could have been what your mate had done on his VY ?? :xmas:

for the difference in dollars I'd say take the VU, IMO the sharper angles did not suit the overall shape of the utes.
drivetrain wise aside from the 10kw extra (which I cant feel between the two) are identical. Early VY had the VU taillights (not clear). Interior the VY seats less comfy and cabin looks silly with the VT -> doorcards.
If you find a VU try and get a series 2, it will have the ls6 manifold.
good luck with whatever you purchase.

nah my mate had the extra screens under the temp and fuel gauge... so 3 screens total for trip computer.

Well I currently have a deposit down on a VY SS so I will more than likely end up with it. Just waiting to see if the repairs to a bump on the front bar and some tailgate dings get fixed to a decent standard before taking the plunge.
Will be my first Holden since my 1981 Gemini :) (Hopefully it will go a bit quicker).

you'll be happy with it mate! I think the LS1 has a bit more go than the 1600 4banger in the geminis :)

The VU's get better mirrors too, thats one of the biggest let downs with the VY's - the piss poor half painted mirrors.
What about tub liners and soft tonneau covers? They'd be the same between the two wouldn't they? The VY I have my eye on doesn't have a tub liner so I'd be in the market for one if I end up getting it.

VU - VZ shared the same rear end, only change was front end and interior, plus rear pods cosmetics wise. I say go for the lid, the soft tonneu covers go off after awhile and the clip system looses its grip.
the only change was the maloos, the lid had different shape due to the sailplane.

One of the reason I am buying a ute over a sedan is so that I can cart the dog around with me places. Don't think he would like it under the hard tonneau cover too much :)
Well took the plunge and bought the VY SS today. Looking forward to when I actually get it but it might not be until around new years it looks like :(

yeah the dogs never seem to like the lids. I no longer have my dog so not really a problem. My advice though is to goto clark rubber and get a mat to sit on the tray/trayliner as the dogs wont be able to stand up when your moving.

I have a Mammoth Mat in mine and reckon it's the bees knees . using a flat piece of rubber or old carpet is a bad idea as they don't breathe & trap moisture .The woven rubber mats are far better ,and really grippy . Definitely worth the $$ imo.

why the delay???
I am salary sacrificing it so it requires a bit of paperwork to get pushed around before the dealership gets their money. Unfortunately my work has shut down until new years so the paperwork will just sit on someone's desk until then :(
Bummer. Just confirmed that the leasing company and dealership are both good to go in terms of giving me the ute but because my actual work has shut down until the 2nd of Jan I wont be getting my ute till then :(
PS Sorry for the seemingly pointless post but this is my 10th post so no I can put a wanted to buy ad up for a new exhaust and soft cover.

I have a soft cover off a VY SS Ute, I had 2 Covers and kept one after selling the ute, yours for $100 if you want it, I also have rear springs, and Front Springs and Struts which only ever did 3000k's before i lowrered it.
PM me if you are interested.
