Hi Guys,

Sorry to ask such an obvious first time question but I plan to buy one of the above cars early in the new year. I did search for a similar question without luck.

Being the forum to ask, what would be considered a better long term propersition.......

A Calloway 300kw GTS Coupe or the VZ 297 LS2?

Appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers,

Bob.

If your talking about which one will go up in value you have to go with the one with lowest build numbers and that is a GTS. GTO's are a lot more common.Still the VZLS2 GTO is a very nice car, they just dont have the rarety or the same pedigree as a GTS. (will be waiting a loooong time before either increases in value tho)

Do we know exactly how many VZ GTO's were built in all configurations?
Thanks in advance.

Bob.

Welcome Bob, to a sensational forum--you'll learn heaps here.
I've already given you my thoughts on this matter-I'll be interested in others' opinions though.
Cheers, Pickles. (Martin).

GTS LSA

Biased opinion

neither will go up in value

The LS2 GTO Z is the only Coupe with 6 litre engine = damn good

GTS now is really only another GTS since VE made them common an not rare

having said that I think it's what YOU want that counts....good luck with it

The fact that VE gts is basically a clubsport R8 may actually help the value of previous gts's because the previous ones are true top of the range/ stand out vehicles.
A gto in the hsv range at the time would come in at position 3 or 4 from the top I recon.

There was also the GTO LE (100 of) and Signature (70 of) too with the mighty LS2's in them. My GTO LE is one of 25 red ones, they also made 25 yellow and 50 black, and all of them had a stripe package, well before the VE's.
Get a 6 speed whatever you do! (sorry Pickles)
cheers

Holden sticking Monaro GTS badges on 70's Kingswood's hardly made the early GTS coupes worth less....

Thanks Guys, I appreciate your feedback, keep em coming!!!!!

I'm focused on three things.

Long term collectibility

Desirability and durability of the mechanical components

And finally, the enjoyment of driving the car.

Please remember we are only talking about the 2 door Coupes not 4 door sedans.

The 300kw GTS is still the fastest most powerful Holden 2 door ever released in Australia and until they potentially re-release it, it will remain so. The flip side to that is the LS1 motors have a reputation of being unreliable etc etc. The LS2 seems to be a lot better sorted. Prices seem to be much the same so that doesn't come into it that much. I could be swayed either way but I do enjoy owning a flagship model so the only contenders are the Series 2 or 3 VY version of the GTS or the VZ GTO. The 2005 LE in Red with White stripes is pretty cool so one of those within my budget would be a walk up start.

Cheers,

Bob.

GTS Coupe has the "cache" of a special modified engine, whereas the LS2 is a really just a simple "crate" motor (a good one at that, still a crate motor). VZ GTO also has only half a boot, if that matters at all.
Time will often produce better performing vehicles. The reality though is that the C4B engined GTS Coupe had a real "halo" effect at the top of the Monaro/HSV tree, whereas the VZ GTO Coupe is, and always will be, just a nice HSV 2 door, even if it does perform basically as well.

G'day Chris, long time no speak!!
But seriously, yep, most do like the manual version, that's for sure.
But it really is "horses for courses", and we've now done 26ks in just over 18 months, & the auto has worked out well for us.
When are you getting that early Monaro under way?-With the way the values on those cars are going, & if you restore it to original to the same standard as that other "beast" you recently completed, you'll be able to retire on the sale proceeds!
Cheers, Pickles.

Hey Bob, they also had the red leather, senator wheels, bluetooth, carbon fibre dash and console highlights, better brakes, and the build # on the boot and instument display on start up, mines # 003, and has just clocked 3500kms.
Also there is only 12 manuals in red, good luck finding one!
cheers

Sorry Bob for the hijack...Hi Pickles..The "beast" will be for sale shortly, might get the HK into the paintshop then, but looking at doing a pro-street 68 Camaro....got my eyes on one, needs work, 454/t400 for 12k.
cheers

"The fastest"?--Not sure about that one Bob, I believe that an auto VZ GTO Coupe holds that title! (Officially anyway-as far as HSV's concerned)
We've had this discussion before. 297kw vs 300kw--there's nothing in it, if you go on factory figures, & there've certainly been some stock LS2s on this site that have dynoed in excess of GTS.
And if you had them down the 400m, I believe it would come down to the driver.
I actually believe the LS2 would come out on top, with more down low--it's just such a great engine-just goes & goes, & it doesn't have the valve train problems that have beset the C4B engine.
And I wasn't going to get into this discussion!
Cheers, Pickles.

Personally mate if I had 50k to spend on a Coupe that I didn't plan to modify to much it would be a Yellow M6 GTS.
If you could stretch another 10k then a Coupe 4 would be the pick for future resale / collectability.
Only 136 Coupe 4's ever made with many more actual factory enhancements than either the GTO or GTS - but only my opinion.

Having owned a Series 2 GTS Coupe , http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n231/redoctober2d/GTS0022.jpg I believe that the GTS Coupes will become collectible in about 15 years time. The reason for this is the low build numbers and they had different running gear, brakes, wheels, suspension and they were very (and still are) desirable cars......Cheers John

I think both will be pretty cool long term....Athough I'm still not convinced that any of them will see the crazy price hike that some of the Aussie 'muscle' car's are getting now.

If it's return your after, maybe you should dump the 50 gorillas into a good investment....

I think buy what floats your boat, injoy it, and what happens come selling time, so be it...

Good luck,
Ross.
