View Full Version : Help in Selecting 19's or 20's

Hi All

I was hoping for some experienced views. I have 18's on my VE SV6 which has been lowered with Pedders, still using FE2 shocks.

Was decided on the weekend on getting new rims in a 20 inch with 245/35/20 but am now tossing up whether to get the 19's 245/40/19 instead.

My major concern is by going 20's that the ride will be come very harsh and I do use the car for everyday use with rear passengers 20% of the time.

I'd like to know from anyone who has lowered their cars on the VE and have gone up to either a 19 or 20 inch and what their thoughts are in terms of ride, potholes etc has been and what you would recommend.

Thanks
Eddie

My ride is on 19's front and rear and lowered 2 inches all around with Pedders (still on FE2 shocks). It's definitely not as smooth as from the factory (DER!) but it's still comfortable enough for me. 19's were a good compromise with it being lowered and stiffer suspension the extra bit of rubber you get over 20's is a little forgiving. Some pot holes still make me wince - sometimes feels like I'm going to destroy a rim.

Can't speak for 20's but I'm so happy with my 19's - wouldn't go back that's for sure!

Oh, the 275's on the rear give me more rubber on the road too... It may help a bit with comfort but it's DEFINITELY great for grip!

And personally, I think they look tops too! :D But I'm bias...

sorry to go off topic

BUT what offset are those rims CSP to fit the 275 on the rear?
any guard rolling to fit etc?

BTW Eddie
i would go for the 20" rims
they look better and the ride difference is not that big of a difference going from 19" to 20"
i do have coilovers so i can make it soft if i want but i dont.

it depends on what u like and what u are willing to tolerate...although the ride on 20" is not even something that u need to class as something to tolerate...very comfy for what u would think they would be like

hhhmmmmm this is interesting. imo the ve has really big wheel arches and although i personally dont own one i think that 20s really look the bit on them.

you wont notice much of a difference between 19s an 20s in ride though there may be some

I like that, I'm looking at the GMAX Defiant and would like to get 275.
What tyres do you have one there as it would be good if i could rotate back to back and front to front coz with larger rears you cant go front to back...make sense coz i think i confused myself

I agree the 20's look great but going from 18 to 20 with lowered coils could really change the ride in a big way that why i'm hoping someone can help

I asked for some feedback on wheels not installing a turbo but your joke was appreciated at the time

The 19's will offer a better ride quality than the 20's.

The 19's will offer marginally better "pot hole" protection than the 20's

20's will offer better handling over all.

The price of rubber for 19's and 20's is similar.

20 x 275 x 30's will increase your rolling diameter on the car and give it a taller final gearing (about 4% if you got to 20 x 275 x 30 from 18 x 245 x 45).

The ride quality is all about the side wall height and construction of the brand of tire.

I have the SSV 245 x 45 x 19, had the R8 club sport 275 x 35 x 19's and have the GTS 275 x 30 x 20's. The best ride quality out of the lot was the R8 19's at 275 on the rear and 245 on the front.

I have also only run OEM Bridgestone rubber, and base the above on that experience. Other tire manufactures may present a different ride quality.

Good luck, more than happy for you to have a ride with 19's and 20's on (back to back if you want), lowered with stock shocks and WPP springs. Send me a PM if interested. Would even put them on your car to try.

Cheers

An issue I just learned about from reading a few things on here is going from 18s to 20s robs you of about 20rwkw so you'd assume that would mean your fuel consumption would go up too anyone know if thats true?

Have decided on the 19's rather than 20's, getting them put in on Sat morning. A few people I spoke to said the 20's would be fairly harsh given its also lowered. Oh well, i'm still pretty happy with the 19's, 43mm of lip all round should look ok also.

Doesnt exzctly rob you of kilowatts may slow down your 1/4 times but getting a lower diff ratio will counteract it.. For example just from 3.07 to 3.46 diff ratio would go very close to evening it out..

Eddie

I picked up my car at the dealer - drove it from there to the tyre place and took the 17" Calais wheels off, replaced with a set of 20s and lowered 40mm.

To me the ride is very different but, not harsh and not bone jarring. I would say it compares favourably with the VYII SS with the 18's I had.

Yeah I need to look for large potholes but thats not different to any other tyre. We also have a VE Berlina on softy 17s and you can tell the diff. The trade off in comfort is more than recouped in handling, driveability and style.

I vote for the 20s. I dont think the difference between the two will be noticeable in terms of ride but in terms of looks it will. Go onnnnn - you know you want to.

Look - heres another pic... I have since put the chrome strip on the bottom of the doors and 1/4 panel calais v style....

I.m just going on what I read here cos wonky has 20s

Chev then tweaked the tune a bit and we got 247.1rwkw and torque almost 600! She certainly hustles along now for an A6! :)
I'm told if I put 18's on my reading would be over 260! (not that I'm bothered).

and this too from another part of the forum about another car (couldnt quote it properly cos its from a closed thead)

He has also had it boosted to 14 psi and edited, but his tuner said that his 20" rims are taking about 20rwkw and he also wants to put 22s on it......

For some reason 20's suit VE's like the 19's suited the VT-VZ's much more than any other size. I know you've made your decision Eddie but i think you'll be wishing you put on the 20's in a few months time, just like me when I went the twin 2.5 inch zorst over the twin 3inch.

Cheers- Matt
