View Full Version : few engine option questions

Just a couple of question regarding future options. I have an L76 Thunder, and wanting a bit more power in NA form. When I say a bit more I mean a fair bit more. Its making 250.5rwkw with exhaust and tune.
Now what I was thinking would be cool is an LS7 Conversion. These are a 7ltr 427(ish) motor correct? Even in factory form these motors must have massive torque. How much would be involved in such a conversion? Including cost of motor how much would I be looking at drive away?
Other option is a bit less extreme. Having a 6ltr block means I can easily stroke to 402 correct? And apparently the L76 heads are very good in stock form. Would a 402 stroker kit fit the block without machining? Would simply having a stroker kit like this from C.O.M.E. or simular with the included pistons, rods and such, combined with a decent cam be a good package with standard heads and manifold? Good for maybe 350rwkw? What would I be expecting to pay for such a setup?
I know this info could be obtained from a builder, but when you have a source of info like LS1.com why not use it?

LS7 conversion budget around $30k. 402 budget around $15k. It's not cheap but strokers/big cubes are awesome.
Or can you do a cam job and get 300 odd rwkw for a lot less. How much do you want to spend?

I know a small cam can get 300rwkw... but i want more than that, and streetable so huge cam for an extra 30kw isnt feasable.
I would of thought less than 15k for a 402 stroker if they heads dont need to be touched. the kits are about 2k with most of the short motors internals, stock heads, some valvesprings, a cam, stock manifold. installed and tuned.
Not saying your wrong but I though you could build a motor for 15k including new block.

Depends on the parts you use of course. For example as you say the COME kits are cheap or do you go Lunati which is expensive? There is still a lot of labour, machining, tuning etc. You won't get out of it for under $10k even with a cheap stroker kit.

it depeneds if you can do any machining of building costs myourself as this would reduce costs as well...
if you want streetability id be going for forced induction, a PD blower will give you a better low-end torque increase than a stroker bottom end. factor around $12-13K tops for a PWR kit, fitted and custom tuned with intercooler. cant beat that noise, either! check this thread out: Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=89009)

Sorry, I totally disagree with that statement having owned both. A stroker is more streetable IMO as it is more consistent (heat issues with PD), more reliable, sounds better (although that's subjective). I don't care what anyone says, NOTHING beats a 400+ cube stroker for all round enjoyment.

I would rather the NA combo, because I feel like I could trust it more in terms of reliability. A blown stock motor is only going to last so long, I know some have gone forever without a hitch, but others dont. I dont want an extreem NA Combo. Like I said, 402bottom end and medium cam. Combined with stronger rods/pistons and such aswell as some good valvesprings I would expect better than stock reliability. Is that too much to expect?
What machining would be required for a L76, being the 6ltr block it already has 4"bore so I would of thougth no machining is required, I have probably overlooked something though.
fair enough, youre right about the new bottom end too.

What is a good size cam for a 402 stroker in a L98 .And what is the biggest cam you can go in a streetable form.eg so I can drive it everyday.
