I know that looked like a question mark, but I have already paid my deposit. So, in light of that, do others that spend 50/50 in traffic (Adelaide, so not too bad) with this cam find it lumy enough. I am not chasing power or dyno rights (although I will give it a run on Brads Hub Dyno in Jan to get a comparison if it is in by then) just want it to sound like my 5.0 1978 LX Torry I had as a kid for 13 years.
Flame away, advice, experience, recomendations, future costs etc
Brad, I will go for the $45 option and fix u up this Thurs, can u PM me EFT details or PM me so I can pay over phone. I really enjoyed the last dyno day you had even though it is on the other side of the world to me.

I run it in my ss, which is the daily driver for the mrs. We have had no issues and on the odd occaision i get to pilot the ol girl at willowbank. It has a nice little shake while at the lights but isnt really excessive, alot of people coment on the sound of it at servos (which will be a more frequent visit if installed). We decided to keep the cam and add heads in early 08 instead of a bigger stick

If you're not chasing power or dyno rights then I don't think this cam is for you. You just want a tough idle and it to sound good?
The *right* much smaller cam can sound just as tough and drive 200 times better and use lots less fuel. My 21x/220 sounds very tough, but it is an aggressive high lift and low LSA cam. You'd think it was a much bigger cam listening to it.

also drews wagon is a sex litre so the smaller will sound better in that, im not sure what motor is in the vz cv8, my old man has a 232/234 in a WH 5.7 and sounds tough dual 3", 1 3/4 pacies, high flow 3" cats (290rwkw+) 600+nm @ 2000rpm but gotta be to the floor in a auto for the power to really come on, it doesnt have the torque on demand like M6 my ute feels to have more torque only 250rwkw and 520nm

Fitzy,
sorry mate i dont checkout every thread, as i simply dont have time, next time shoot me a pm, or just simply give me a call.
as written previously in this thread, not always a huge cam is better. For example a 110 will be much rougher at idle and more agreesive power and torque curve than a 114, which will have a softer idle, power and torque curve. As this is the effect of the compression ratio and cylinder pressure working in conjunction.
Good luck in what ever decision u may choose. Here is a grind i installed last week on a ute as a daily driver......235/239 on a 112.

Shane, thats pretty good fuel economy mate. What were you getting before ?
I am averaging about 17 L per 100klms now, before I put the cam in. But my average weekly speed is only about 40 kmh.
I think I might need a fuel tanker !

I was doing about the same, once HRT8 dropped a new tune in her I get 14 L/100km's with avg speed of 38km/h which I think is fantastic economy and I don't drive it like a granny all day long. Highway I see 8L/100 km easy. Be interesting to see how much mine changes once the stick I got goes in.

It varied but pre cam days i would see about 12 to 14L depending how i drove it.
with the 222/224 i was at around 15 to 17L
I can't tell you what my average speed was.. the way i measure fuel economy is full filled tank driven to empty line and filled again to full take total Lites used and total kl ms traveled and work it out from there. I don't know if other people do it this way or just realy on there computer read out's.

I go off the readouts. Prob not the best thing to do though I suppose.
Mine tells me I am very low on fuel after using 60 litres, which is about 350 kms. I think my fuel usage went up a bit after the MAFless tune and OTRCAI.
Will get back with some figures after next Sunday. I am like a kid waiting outside a sweet shop for it to open.

Crusty don't take this as a personal attack please, but i find it extremely difficult to believe people getting a true average fuel economy of 7 to 8 l per 100..
One of our members in Mackay likes to claim he can drive from Mackay to Brisbane on 1 tank of fuel... 1000klms on what 60 or 70 litres of fuel... out of stroked (hahahha) h/c manual clubsport..
The best i have ever got is about 570klm with the distance to empty showing 0klms left... and that was when the car was unopened and mafless tunned..
The latest four cylinder petrols get that type of economy...

Half of my run into work is on the expressway (Adelaide version anyway).
I can stick on the cruise control at 105 kmph and average between 7-8 L per 100 klms. But it is only for about 15 kms, the rest is city driving in traffic.
Its just the stop - start, 1st and 2nd gears that kill my economy. The only reason my overall average is down is due to the section of the expressway that I am on each day.

570??? wow thats shockingly bad, I have personally got 800 km's from a tank and that was with some town driving but mostly 100 km/h stuff. City only driving I get 400 out of 60 litres avg speed of 38km/h.

Are these figure via the computer or Receive docket from cashier at petrol station and write exact klms traveled for that fuel and then worked out manually...
Not having a go, struggle to understand this kind of economy out of a v8 modern or not and maybe because i have tried my hardest on trips from Brisbane to Sydney and Brisbane to Mackay and so on to achieve these figures and never come close to some of the claims that others make..
I may be way out of touch and am very happy to be corrected :)

There is a very big difference in tunes, HRT8 tuned in some lean cruise points for my car at various speeds, I drove to the speed I would normally cruise on and he dialled in a commanded lean AFR so she just sips away at the fuel, economy improved dramatically after the tune. I drove to the outlaws for christmas which is a 150km round trip and the fuel gauge barely moved and it showed an instant between 7.5 and 8.4 l/100km while set on cruise for the duration, that trip was done just after I filled up so now that I've driving in town for a bit the avg has come up however I've already travelled 300 km's on this tank and its just hit 1/2 tank on the needle so instead of getting 400 km's i'll probably see more like 500-550 just by making a 150 km trip on the Highway.

My average fuel economy over the last 18 months/69 refills is 12.65l/100kms (I keep a spreadsheet and use the dockets). My trip computer is always within 1l/100kms of the measured.
I can easily average under 10l/100kms on the hwy, but I can also easily average over 20l/100kms around town if I put one up it..

My Dad's Statesman is almost always in the high8s/100km on the F3 at 110km over the Hornsby to Newcastle Stretch. The same car has a 212 218 115 cam and would run 12.8/110 with the stock converter/3.07s and be as quiet as a luxury car should.
Back to the thread - a 232 234 112 with the same gearing and setup would most likely be in the 11s/100km at the same speed - same tuner etc.
My car now with 224/228 114, Dart 225s , 4400 converter would be in the high 10s with 4.11s but would drop in to the high 9s/100km if it had 3.73 diff gears. Stock it couldnt go under 11

Okay, cam in ! Drove it last night for 5 mins with a base cam tune. I only stalled it once (pussy with the clutch till I can afford a new one, I think). Have to wait till the tune is finalised until I get it back.
First impression were that it seemed to climb the rpm's a bit slower than pre-cam, but the tq makes the difference on the speedo. Something I will have to get used to. I suppose before it was like revving out a 249 rwkw motor then stepping into your mums ford laser that revs quickly to 5000rpms but not going anywhere fast. Mind you, my tuner drives my car better than I do and he sat my 110kg ass well back in the seat 1st - 2nd.
He had it on the dyno today (39c in Adelaide) and she got 1rwkw more than I asked for with my hard earned money. And yes I know dyno's dont represent strip times but it is all we have at the moment in SA.
I hope to make it to Brad's dyno day on the 13th to confirm the # on a diferent dyno.
I will keep this thread open until I get her back and post up a nice sound/video file, then the mods can close it.
Funny how the same cam in similar cars (from actualy standing behind them) can sound so different. One of my concerns was the 232/234 would sound to nasty for a daily, but it is music to my ears (so far) !
Cheers fella's

Did Brad do the install and tune? What did she pull mate and what dyno?
Before and after figures would be good.
I know what you are saying about slower revving with the cam, mine used

Not Brad, but want to take down to his next dyno day to see the improvements on the same Hub machine that I reached 239.5 on last time.
Have bolted on a OTRCAI and had MafLess tuned since then, for a consistant (3 dyno's across Adelaide, all independant just so I know the number is real) 249-250.
The cam has added a bit to that. I am like a kid waiting to open his Xmas present. Hope to have back tomorrow arvo after another cold start test and some final jigging with the 'return to idle'.
Brads dyno was about 10 rwkw over what Hendrick's was last time, so I might have to look for one of those VE GTS badges on ebay to hang from my mirror to go along with the many fluffy dice my wifes friends bought me for XMAS !
And I am Irish 'for fuk sake'.

Dont know if we spoke (voice) prior to the day, but I just checked back through the forum and it was you that had a few photo's of my car and a vid (in QT), it is still my ringvideo if someone calls me. Cheers.
I went on Zac's cruise, was bloody great. Met a few lads. All know more about cars than me. Popped in at Parafield to listen to a few cams.
Obviously the LSA on each is the difference (sorry I am an accountant) and I think mine is a 112, but for all I know it isnt !! So yours would idle lumpie than mine !
How does it go getting back to idle (electronic TB) ?

I dont have electronic t/b, but no probs with idle just the same.
Did have a few teeting probs when the cam first went in, but all
good now. Yes 110 is a little lumpier than 112.

I may be way out of touch and am very happy to be corrected :)
man im reading these figures and in SHOCK!?!? 20bucks of juice gives me about 100kms... IF THAT mabye 80 a full tank im lucky to get 300ks out of, all city driving... and giving it a bit of stick here and there :P well mostly there and there :P

it definitely comes down to the tuning mate.
a sedan has a i think a 75-80litre tank, so i would image getting 450-500km's should be quite easy to do with a small mid range cam like a 224/228.
as a bit of a comparison, my 402 with lumpy 235/245 cam gets 360km city cycle from the 65litre tank and just over 650km's on the highway.

Sounds tuff as Fitzy I love the sound of the chirping happy birds getting shattered by the rumble of a good V8...

Didnt find this thread the other day when cam searching ,sounds like we are heading down the right track though. Catchya at the dyno day fitzy.I wont have the cam in this run but It pulls some reasonable numbers anyway. I think Im also chasing the old cammed up note of my 76 lx torana that I wrote off 20 years ago aswell.

I have a 232/242 Comp Cam sitting in my room! What springs are you guys using? I also have a 3600rpm stall to go in and have my eye on a very tough auto!
Should be exciting, and I'll post results when it's all done.
