There seems to be a few discussions happening on a number of threads about Peter Starr's twin screw Whipples. So I don't get "accused" of starting yet another thread about my car.....FFS ;).............. I thought I'd start this one and ask those of you out there who have or had Whipples, or know people who have had them, whether or not you/they have had problems; and if so, what were/are they? Or were the problems related to Peter Starr's non existant after sales service?
I don't expect to get alot of feedback with this one, but am just curious of any dramas people have had with them.
My experience
I've done over 50,000kms with my 2.3ltr and am still on my 1st belt and she hasn't skipped a beat once! I live in Darwin where you won't find air temps or engine temps any higher in Australia and have driven her right across our countries HUGE open lands where I've also had her at speeds of over 300km/h!! :)

Wassup mate? Im actually keen to hear feedback. Not alot is said about Whipples though I know a few very powerful and quick machines that use them.
PS Ive heard of STARR's crappy service

It was tongue in cheek mate to a previous thread with Scotty.
There is nothing wrong with the Whipples as we all know - just look a little further into where the problems were .....search button mate or maybe even a google.

Never had a issue with mine or any I have fitted to customers cars , I have owned 4 whipple systems myself and keep going back to them over other options.
The only issue is belts same as with any belt driven blower , but setup properly they give trouble free service.
Starr had a few issues with staff from what I could see when I did contract tuning for them and poor organisation .

Mate, I take everything with a pinch of salt.... could you imagine what the world would be like if everything said was taken seriously??!!
I just hope my new 3.3ltr gives me as many "hastle free" kms that the 2.3ltr gave me!
Dan - Can you explain why you keep going back to the Whipple systems please?

Bottom end GRUNT , nothing compares on a daily driver , if I was after top end power then a Vortech or turbo would be my choice but as I rarely see over 4000rpm in normal driving the Vortech or turbo doesnt cut it.

Are they prone to more belt issues than other blowers?

Don't worry simon, Ive got a source for a VE PWR OTRCAI for your new car, don't worry about whipples :jester:

No , any supercharger that doesnt have the belt aligned properly or tensioned properly will have belt issues due to the load required drive the supercharger , the problem comes when that load changes with throttle changes , a rev limit or on/off/on/off throttle application will always stress a belt , have a look at a nitro or top alchol car what happens to the belt if the car is pedalled to much.
I have done 40k trouble free on my original belt , changed ro a new configuration for the look as much as relaibility.
I like the uncluttered look of my new system

As Delco has pointed out I don't think belt issues are especailly related to just Whipple superchargers. I have a slightly different set up than the average being that my 2.3ltr unit is inverted on a BOSS GT:1peek:, however some inital belt issues when changing to a higher boost application where sorted quickly with the addition of a sliding idler pulley developed by Yella Terra and a blue racing belt. The sliding idlier pulley can be mounted and adjusted to tighten the belt rap around the main blower pulley. I'm not sure if this concept is required, or can be engineered for the LS1, LS2 & L98 engines. Heat is also the enemy of any supercharged application but the Whipple has proven to be reliable and reasonably consistant so far. Mine get used on a daily basis as my company vehicle and does a mixture of city and interstate driving in SA weather conditions.

Hey Dan the new setup looks heaps neater. Why would they not have a belt system similar from the supplied kit? I take it you dont have slippage issues? Im not sure what boost you run, but could that setup be a problem with high boost applications?
Cheers

Have run it up to 15 psi without issues , bonnet clearance is the reason the Starr kit was like it was but since the 3.3L already comes through the bonnet by 5mm a bit more at the front for the drive is not a issue.

whatabout a turbo system setup for daily drivability? smaller exhaust housings can mean boost coming on scary early and in more daily driven rev ranges.. wouldnt that destroy the PD ?

Looks good gets rid of the remote drive and has a clutch like affect and looks alot more simply engineered and neater, "should have been like this on day one"
I had a 2.4 Starr autorotor setup for a few years and im sure everone that has had one would agree that they suffer from under bonnet temps and can feel doughy on a hot day and violent on a cool day.and no that the autorotor is a more efficient S/C than the whipple.
I would say after seeing all turbo systems , and other superchargers they would have to be the best Forced Induction full stop ,but only when the engines built heads are done and it's making 400+rwkw's so on a warm day when you loose 50kw's it's still a wonderfull thing to have, but i dont think there for the HP Hero crowd either. and the whine from a PD is priceless.
$$$ for $$$ on a standard engine turbo's are the best maybe then a vortech type setup or any with a front mount intercooler.

So where are we up to Scotty,
Is your car engineered yet ? You were going to post up an engineering report after teh Summernats.
How did you go at Summernats ? You have been unusually quiet

Whipple problems anyone ?
I had a problem last weekend at Hidden Valley Raceway whilst doing lap sprints. The outer ring came off the blower pulley (this also happened on my 2.3ltr Whipple) so the belt slips straight off! Below are some photos of the standard pulley and a pulley which we fabricated up during the week and is a single solid piece of polished aluminium. It works a treat and looks much better than the standard one in my opinion!
Dam funny
