hey need help on what road bike to get
Ive always had trail bikes, but have also had an 88 gsxr1100 and a 94 zzr600
I want a road bike
Im thinking of an r6 or r1 but also the cbr range
I have a bad right wrist, so i dont want to be too leaned over on my wrists,
would a litre type bike be too much for someone who has done maybe 2000kms on jap bikes
my last bike was a harley softail
thanks

Mate..i own a custom softail and have owned a couple of R1's including kevin curtain ex race r1 and it went like stink and had the wow factor but was ****#in uncomfortable to ride.
Brother has a busa (turbo upgrade) and it shits on r1 for comfort...it is a pleasure to ride
He reckons he's on a cbr in the new year (with a turbo upgrade):)

hey
i didnt like the weight of the harley and i missed the speed my zzr600 had
i dont wanna go over a litre motor or 200kg max dry weight as the heaver i go , then less comfortable i will be at lower speeds

What the hell is that bike its not a CBR1000R.....?????? Looks tough kinda like the naked bikes that kawasaki have the Z1000 and the like...
If you dont want the pressure on the wrists a supersport style bike isnt really for you. Maybe look at a more tourer style or Naked bike more of an upright position on the bike.

For about $8000 you should be able to get yourself a ZZR1100 or even an early CBR1100XX Blackbird, both very nice, comfortable and powerful bikes.

Hi
Would you know of any Vtwins that are similar to a zzr1100 or blackbird?

how do the litre v twins go in comparison to other bikes like zx9, r1 , 900rr ect

They go alright, just look at the likes of Ducati 1098's and Aprilia RSV's, V-twins are extremely torquey compared to 4cyl litre bike but don't make as much hp or rev as high, personally I just got myself an '07 Kawasaki ZX-14 and love it, previously had a ZX-12R and haven't looked back since trading in on the 14.

V twins have more low down torque, good for punching out the corners. Not much of a top end, but hey, who wants to race around at break neck speed all the time ....
SNAKE1978

so 0-120 speeds are close between a vtwin litre bike and a 4cyl?
also
not haven riiden much in the way of jap bikes, how long does it take to get used to that leaning forward feel
sorta to me doesnt seem as safe and stable as when ya back and weights on your bum, is it something u get used to?

Yeah, I like it too! I've had enough of balls-out crotch rockets. Next time I'll be going for a street-fighter/cafe racer style thing like that.
V-twins are extremely torquey compared to 4cyl litre bike but don't make as much hp or rev as high.
Not true for my TLR, it had the same redline as the Fireblade of the time and was as quick in a straight line and had an incredible top end but little torque down low. It actually was annoying in that regard.
I think a lot of people are starting to realise that the all-out sportsbikes are marketing over practicality. For example, the R6 quotes good peak power but needs its tits revved off to make it. The most fun bike I ever rode was a V-twin (with the TLS motor) Cagiva Raptor. Short gearing, 'sit up and beg' riding position (comfortable). Bloody fantastic street bike.

Sporty & comfortable.. I would definitely be looking at something like a Z750 or Z1000 fantastic bikes.
Ducati Monster is not my preference but could be had for that budget if you were italian vtwin inclined.
Insurance on nakeds often cheaper too.

Not as much top end but much more bottom end.You wont get the topend rush of the the 4 if thats what u like! Do a few mods and will run 10s on the quarter all day. I have a VTR1000 02 with high rise pipes, k and n, and jet kit, goes pretty good, lighter than a SV1000/TLR1000 also. I paid $8000 for it.
If I went a 4 cylinder I would go CBR1000 but you are lookin over$10K for an '04 model. A 929 or a 954RR(nice) would be sweet. They are a less wristy then the other litre bikes and more comfortable on the road.
Put it this way. An average rider on a good twin will stay with a R1 on a drag race from the lights not a problem. Much easier to get away quickly on a twin. At 200km/h he will start to pull past you.....
cheers

Hi
To Hymey: Does your quote above include the Ducati Monster? If so how does the Ducati smaller v twin engine compare to the larger v twin? What I am saying is I would love a new Ducati Monster with a 695 and beat an R1 at the lights.....this couldn't be so?

given your budget and your wrist factor ther are a couple of bikes that often get forgotten in the mix.
I would hunt around for a YZF1000 or YZF600, they are the sports tourers from Yamaha along similiar lines to the zzr.
they are comfy to ride and will give you the thrills that you chase.

im only guessing that my wrist would be a factor
i owned a 1988 zzr1100 about 5 yrs ago. It was my 1st road bike and seemed ok, a little sore in the wrist after half hr or so.
since then i had a zzr600 which was fine..
so perhaps now i might be ok, id have to do a test ride and see.
theres alot out there like the yzf, cbr, gsxf, fz6, vfr etc that offer a bit more comfort than say an r1
basically i doubt ill do any rides over an hr each way.. however where i live the rides can be bendy ( dorrigo mountain) so im willing to sacrifice some top end , to have a lighter bike 200kg or less to make the trips a bit more fun .

Snake,
Make no mistake, the current gen Supersport bikes are a world away from the ZZR600, or any 1990's or 1980's Jap supersports.
I have an '00 ZZR600 and an '06 ZX6R and the difference between the two is like night and day. I use the ZZR for commuting and the ZX for fun/trackdays. There is a yawning generational gap between the two and of you jump back onto a modern bike now thinking not much has changed then you have a problem.
The ZZR1100/Blackbird/Thunderace will suit you perfectly provided that you give them the respect they deserve and be aware of your capabilities. Not trying to talk you down or anything but a lot of guys these days get back onto the bikes after a hiatus of 10-15 years, thinking not much has changed and next thing you know they have put themselves into a tree because they overestimated their skill and underestimated the bikes' potential.
Get back onto something modest and after a year or two start thinking about getting yourself a ball tearer :)

so in your opinion would a 955i daytona or an r6 be ok?
955i being a triple , will have more useable power and the r6 , being a 600 wont have that front wheel up in every gear

The R6 is a much more hardkore supersports than the 955. And it will still be a little ball tearer. Plenty of current gen R6's used for racing in Australia.
I think the question you need to answer is: what do you want to do with your bike? Commuting? Weekend fun/scratching only? Trackdays? A bit of all three or just a mixture of two? Because one bike will excel in one area and be woeful in others. The R6 is an awesome track bike but I wouldn't like to commute on one. The Blackbird would be great for commuting and a bit of weekend fun but shithouse for trackdays.
The 955 would probably be a better all rounder, depending on your intended use.

i havent actually been off bikes for a while
i sold my harley last week
b4 that i had a ktm300 and b4 that a zzr600
in the past 10 yrs, i havent gone more than 3 months without a bike of some sort
most of my rising will be to and from work - 45kms ( 30 mins) each way
yes id like to use it once a month maybe on a weekend fun thing, but even so, the ride would only be a max 45 mins each way
im not too concerned about a bike having too much power, for example the r6, however im pretty tall and dont wanna look like a pumpkin on a pea too much
as much as i like the 600's i cant help but feel they are more a bike for some1 under 6 foot and 80kg or less..
in saying all that,, i dont ride to get from a - b, i have a car for that, ,, i ride for fun mostly,, thats why i like that jap bike rush you get.

Go the Daytona, they're a lot better for cruising commuting than a supersport 600, and as you already pointed out a lot more useable power.
Not to mention the sweet sweet sound of the triple!!! That alone makes it worthwhile.

I rode a 955i daytona last night, and it was kinda front heavy. Upright position though, for both the rider and a pillion (if you have one), so good on long rides.
Otherwise I might suggest an SV650 for commuting, very comfortable, great power down low where you would use it, and the beautiful sound of a V Twin mmmmmmmm
I own an 03 R6, and the power is also quite down low, but I'm not sure you would be terribly comfortable coming from a Harley, and it might put too much pressure on your wrist with such an aggressive riding position to it.

My Bro has an 02 ( I think ) R6 & I was surprised at the power it has for a 600 but do agree on the comfort as far as the wrists are concerned !
I've always been a lover of the V Twin since riding a VTR 1000 a few years back . To me the V twin is just a torque box & had more than enough to pick the front wheel up on excess of 100 kph under hard acceleration in 3rd . Like a dirt bike on the road :smilesandbanana:
snake1978, I was in the same boat to speak. Trail bike man going to a road bike. I chose the Yamaha fz1 naked bike. It's basically an R1 with dirt bike handle bars which makes you sit alittle more up right and is really comfortable.
The FZ1N is quick as well, 140+k's an hour in first gear and pulls in every gear
