Howdy,
Over the past few months my gearbox has been playing up! 3rd and 4th were the first to let go, which I noticed after a few runs at the drags when the box started slipping into 3rd (Still leading me to 13.4 with a crappy box!) The box held on like this for a while and the car could still be driven in a sensible manner, which led me to continue to do so. Over time, the box wouldn't select 'D' but would only take off when put back into '1', then select 'D' once I was going. The car stayed like this for a little while with 1st and 2nd both holding on strongly, but yesterday, a shift into 2nd at higher revs seen the box go 'bang' in traffic.
Unfortunately, the only gear my car will select now is reverse!
First of all, I had the box checked out/ diagnostic system plugged in when it first started not selecting 'D' as there was some thought that it could have been electrical/ computer related, but there was no engine light on the dash, and no codes came up through the diagnostic system, which led us to think that it was simply mechanical. Would you's agree with this statement?
Obviously now, I am after a new box, but I am undecided as to wether I should go with..
a) The 4L65E as I have a 3600rpm stall sitting under my bed to suit a 4L60E box, unfortunately it never made it to installment time! Will this fit into a 465LE box?
b) The 4L60E and 4L65E boxes are both $1721 from the holden shop in Townsville. These boxes are re-manufactured with a 2 year warranty, but are obviously not brand new. This price includes freight.
c) I do like to give my car a good squirt here and there, so would it be worth going with alot stronger box? My friend obtained a 465LE from Craigs Automatics in Sydney for $3600ish that's been abesolutely beefed up and another mate went with a box from Gilroys Automatics in Toowoomba for around the same price which is rated to 900-1000HP. Should I be looking at an option like this, so that I hopefully never have to get another box while I have the car? Would a modified/ strengthened 4L60E even be a good option? OR, would a brand new, standard 4L65E be suffice for the job I am looking for it to do?
I have money for any of the options, I just want to try and replace it fast!
Thanks in advance for any of your advice/ opinions!
Jason.
