Hey guys I was wondering what you think I should go with and I'd especially like to hear from anyone with experience with one or both? I've got a vt ss 5.7 m6 with the following mods: ss inductions air intake and maf sensor, tuned computer, extractors & hi-tech full stainless exhaust.... I'm considering either supercharging/turbo-ing or stroking my car (to either 383 or 402). I was wondering which way i should go and if I go stroked should i spend the extra money and go 402? (I'll also be putting a heavy duty clutch and 3.9 or 4.11 diff either way....and probably cam:))

The thing im learning more is what do you wish to do with the new found power ?
Most people look at how much HP they can get for there buck, and thats a tough thing to overlook. We all want a nice dyno sheet for dollars spent.
So what will be the purpose of the car ?

sounds like a good plan either way.... me personally would love the 402 stroker jus for intimidation when u pull up to the lights... but if u want a sleeper go the turbo or supercharger route JMO

Stroke it and then stuff one of Voodoos superchargers on it:D
Thats what i'm saving to do at the moment:D

For me , I would be looking at cost.
If your engine as low KLMs then a supercharger is the go ( should be some secondhand units around )( place a wanted ad )
If your engine is getting a bit old now , then a stroker rebuild might be the go,
I am currently in the stage where my VY ute as 3000,000 Klms on the clock. The engine is still OK ( pulls like a train ) and the ute is in great shape but a fstandard size forged rebuild and a supercharge is too expensive , so I have opted for a L76 stroker with a smallish cam for my dollars. We will see how it goes. Engine is in the builders at the moment , so hopefully early Feburary I will be loving life.

first of all get rid of the SS inductions gear...its robbing ur car of power!!!
second as Bloo said...what do u want out of the car and what do u want the extra power for?
i have driven a 402, a stock turbo and stock supercharged car and also a 383 with a blower....personally i would love the 383 blown or better yet a 427 blown...but thats a huge cost.
for me and what i want its a well built stroker 383/402/427 torque monster
but its all a personal decision and it really depends like i said
what u want out of the car
what u will use it for
budget
future plans
etc

thats the way I would do it, if you FI and old motor and it lets go its going to hurt your wallet so I would FI a good newish motor or build a good solid stroker if the motors a bit old then as time gos on you may be in a position to FI your strong stroker.Personaly I would love a dirty big stroker for easy power everywhere without the risk of the bang factor.

really depends if you got lowish km's i would go FI but if u got over say 120,000km i would be strengthening your current motor up which would be far more cheaper then strokin it, then FI in time to come, reason in sayin this is becaz say u spend 15k on FI which is ur maximum budget and then few months later down the track your engine gives way what u gona do then.

Hey guys thanks all for the help! At the moment I'm not sure what the use is for.....I've been thinking bout all of this for a while but the opportunity to do it has come up since I lost my license :bawl: Which also makes me want to do this even more-so now so the police have a REAL reason to want to pull me over (instead of just the unwanted p-plate attraction) :eyes:
Which brings me to what I want out of the car....Pretty much low end power. most the time I'd be lucky to even get to 5th atm....I haven't really been thinking bout budget yet. too scary :)
and as for future plans: burnouts.
p.s. car has done 120000 but whole driveline was replaced at 100000

its an open question. Its like asking whats a car cost. You can get cheap ones, expensive ones and expensive cheap ones.
Cheap, Reliable, Quality... pick 2.

I just spent around $12G on a 383 stroker. With all quality internals but by no means the best, plus factor in extras like exhaust upgrades, injectors, clutch and the extra tyres that the torque eats... love that feeling though...
Build a tough N/A motor live with that for a while and then you have a good base for you F/I....

I had G@D Performance price me up a package on a good 383ci stroker capable of pulling about 350rwkw and I think it worked out to be about $15800 on the engine, or you could spend an extra $1500 or so on a 6lt block and go a 402ci or something similar and pull even more at the wheels.

Rip out the LS1 stick it in the shed, buy an L98. A cheap "stroker" conversion and a great platform for future FI, cam or whatever.

Getuted - you say buy an l98 for a cheap stroker ????
How do you work that out
Buy the l98 - $ 5-6000 , then add $15k to stroke it
20k isnt a real cheap stroker is it
I only know as I am in the process of doing this with an L76 for my monaro

Wow to be honest with you I didnt realise it would cost THAT much. On the other hand I knew it wouldn't be cheap. I forgot to mention that I'm a mechanic and I'll be doing it myself, so I don't know how much labour was in the cost of that????

Thats something I hadn't actually put alot of thought into! But it's definetly something to think about! Would it be possible to get it supply only because I'm a mechanic and could do the swap myself?
P.S I work for a holden pd department and we got a couple of VE clubby's or a gts i think? done by you guys and all the boys were extremely impressed with the way they came back! :)

Have just done my own rebuild. I was going to post this elsewhere once i'm totally finished, but I may aswell put it up to give you some ideas.
I ended up buying my parts from the US due to a burgeoning Austalian dollar.
I could have sourced parts cheaper (i.e. through contacts at Rocket Industries) but I went an overseas option.
So I bought:
Diamond Pistons and Rings, Floating Gudgeon pins, K1 Technology (Carrillo) Rods, ARP 2000 Rod Bolts, Clevite 77 Bearings, Cometic Head Gaskets ... basically a good mix of performance gear, without going mental.
I have to admit though, its a hell of a lot more expenisve than just buying a set of SRS Probe pistons and rods from Rocket.
Anyway, I am hoping you get what you pay for.
Customs ****ed me around.
They tried their best to make it take over a month for my parts to arrive (even after I paid Express international shiping).
So all up I've spent $2700.70 on parts - this includes the customs brokerage I had to pay to expidite the process.

http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Seedyrom/pistons2_001.jpg
http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Seedyrom/invoice.jpg
Then add another $600 on angine boring to fit oversize pistons, cleaning and balancing of crank
http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Seedyrom/duncan.jpg
You'll need new coolant and a new harmonic balancer bolt ($40), a small can of hylomar and RTV SensorSafe Gasket maker ($40). I also bought new seals for the front and rear ($100?). My run-in oil is cost $8 on sale :).
And you're looking at about $3500 for a built 346 cu LS1 when swinging the spanners yourself.
To go a stroker (383 or 408) would have only been another $1000 on top of that for an eagle forged stroker crank.
Why didn't I?
The 346 and Gen-T suits my purposes. If I went stroker, my cam might be considered small, though I think it would have worked well. I just don't have the experience to make that call yet.
I was also worried that my Gen-T turbo would have run out of puff with a stroker.
The main reason I left it stock cubes with forced induction is that its a great daily driver as is.
Quiet, unassuming, and friggen quick.
I'm not out to do smoke shows or sit at the lights rocking and bringing attention to myself.
Hell, I even have fake LPG gas stickers on my number plates :)
Your call ... though from what i've heard, strokers are great.
But I've only ever been in the old aussie 5L strokers, so can't really comment.
(They are awesome if you were wondering)
also, don't forget that my bargain basement price, also includes everything falling on my own head when things go wrong, and the fact that my car has been off the road forever ;)

By the sounds of it you haven't had the pleasure of even a nice head/cam 346 LS1? You might not need to spend the dollars on a stroker or FI once you have sampled a nicely setup LS1, probably making, say, another 80-90rwkw more than you have now.
Sonny's option does sound tempting. Who needs a 383 when you can slot an L76 in with a nice cam for that sort of money and still make bulk HP?
