View Full Version : Buy a VY CV8 Monaro or a VY Clubsport?

Ok I have around $35,000 to spend on my new ride, I was gonna get a VE SS Ute or Sedan helped by finance or a loan but I rather not and just buy a car out right. I will be trading in my ss and I have $23,000 saved. I have always wanted a CV8 Monaro, ive been wanting one for years but I also love a VY Clubsport, I know the HSV comes with better options but the insurance would be a killer and im thinking the monaro would be cheaper in insurance?
What would you do if you were in my situation?

Monaro all the way....
I'm guessing you will probably end up modifying the car in some way so in terms of power/drive ability they should be about the same. I prefer the lines of the Monaro. Depending on how long you keep it I'm guessing the Monaro will be worth alot more too.

Yeah I will be doing it up and keeping it for a few years plus it's gonna be manual so its gonna be so much better to drive then my current ss. I love the look of a nice monaro with vx gts rims :xmas:

Yep, another vote here from the Monaro.
Its a difficult decision, given the extra goodies that come with the clubby (specially an R8) like brakes, suspension and decent alloys.
For my money though, there is nothing like the classic coupe shape. Throw on some nice alloys, or even leave the standard jobbies and spend the cash on the motor and suspension. Either way, resale will probably be better down the track (if thats important to you) and at the end of the day they arent building any more...
Enjoy dude

Dane,
you can answer your own question about insurance with 5 mins on an insurance companies website.
Personally I think Monaros/HSV Coupes are a cracker of an investment. I can't see them losing as much value as an HSV.
(Especially since there is no direct replacement)

Sorry guys! VY clubsport is better you can fit 4 people in comfort!!! Plus better brakes suspension and diff ratios etc. You don't have to spend lots on them. Used to have series 1 clubsport manual with exhaust and edit and went great. Insurance was only $1100 a year for a 31 year old.

How often you you need to get people in the back seat (Monaro's are not easy to get into the back), will you need the port hole through the seat/how much do you intend to modify (considering the HSV has a number of the usual mods already done)?
Also, yeah the insurance....
I'm with AAMI, over 30, $802 a year insurance. They wont insure ANYONE under 30, so definitely do your homework BEFORE buying (as you are doing here).
Both cars are obviously very desirable (particularly) for a 21 yo male, but the ongoing costs are definitely something to be prepared for at your age.

I have a wife and 2 kids that regularly use the GTO, stock with 3.73 gears, brakes and suspension and pay less than $1100 insurance (even with a 408 stroker in it now)
No way i'd swap a Monaro/GTO for a clubby

If the choice is between those two , you obviously can live with a coupe therefore easy - get the munro (or a SS ute / Maloo ). The only reason you would get a sedan is if you need one !

Having owned both a 2003 Y-Series R8 and a 2003 Monaro CV8 I always preferred the Monaro (why I have always kept it and not sold it).
I think the Monaro is better for the following reasons (personal opinion):
- Coupe look/shape
- Better spec'ed inside
- Handles better
- Lower standard height
- More comfortable
- Monaro with PBR performance brakes had a better/more progressive feel than the HSV Premiums on the R8 (cheap upgrade)
- Better resale
- Still gets lots of comments/compliments that the Clubby never got
- My Monaro insurance is $400/yr and the Clubby was $850/yr
- I always thought the Clubby body kit was a bit "try hard" and I hated the way bits fell off (ie. the lower front bar grills, common problem)

Monaro...........
The bodykits on the VY/Z Clubbies don't impress me where as the coupe had the soft flowing lines throughout the entire model run.
And check the insurance before purchase. It will be expensive either way. AAMI does cheap policies with a VERY expensive excess option but I don't know at what age this kicks in. The best of luck.....

It's a personal preference thing when choosing car.
I personally prefer the coupe shape over th 4 door,
the resale will be better than a 4 door.
Plenty of room in a coupe and the rear seats are comfy so I am told
Handles nicely and has better body lines
Trust me you will be noticed more the Monaro
a bit of motoring nostalgia with a monaro.
You will have to way up the insurance cost though,
I am a wee little older than you:jester: and my insurance for the GTO is $850 p.a ( Ithink about $100 less for me if mine was a monaro)
It sounds like Voodoo is selling his GTO for under $40,000 going by his post and that has a 408 and is Twin screw super charged too,Has all the mods already done for you,

Hey Cashie that's very cheep insurance for the CV8!
I got a very good deal on our Turbo Territory Ghia with 20" chromies, but was unable to use the same insurer for our CV8.
CV8 is insured with over $30,000.00 of upgrades/modifications. To get it insured at an agreed amount I was happy with we had to stay with Shannons.

There is NO choice to be made.
Unless you're prepared to go for a 6 litre LS2 powered "VZ" Series Clubsport, you HAVE to go with a Coupe.
The Coupe is a classic, no two ways about it, it will be a better bet than a 4 door any day, (unless it's family transport!).
However, if you're prepared to "move up" from a VY to a VZ Clubsport, then an additional "set of numbers", ------ some would say, "a beautiful set of numbers"------ come into play,----- & alter the equation somewhat.
Cheers Pickles.

Ultimately, it depends upon what YOU want - as always. If you do not regularly carry passengers, then the coupe. If you have a young family (baby seats, etc) then it will be impractical and a chore to get them in and out.
Personally, I'd be looking for a nice GTO, as it will have the best of both things you are currently seeking - if a coupe is practical for you.

Monaro ...
Any bogon can throw on some terrible, aftermarket fibreglass add-ons to a stock Commodore and it will "look"(?!) like a HSV .. which in my opinion only seems to degrade the brand - i.e. in this case imitation is NOT flattery.
No bogon can make his 4-door look like a 2-door. :)

I would go the Monaro over the VY clubby as I prefer the VX shape that the Monaro still has over the sharper VY/VZ lines.
But at the end of the day which do you like?? make a choice that you believe in, not what others say.

Vote for the Monaro here.
For me though there is no substitute for the looks, style and power.
I love my car and never grow tired of it's looks or how it feels to drive.
On the insurance side let me say, yeah AAMI and even Suncorp refused to insure me when I got my first monaro at 23. I ended up with RACQ, and with rating 2 ended up paying close to $2000 a year to insure the car.
It has now come down to a much more resonable level, about $800. Probably still expensive, but here is a lesson for the other insurer's, I'm looking at you AAMI. I will never ever use there insurance or any of the other companies that refused me at 23. And I would recommend that to anyone else here. These companies need to realise that we all grow up and some of us have long memories.

The monaro for sure as I have had both. Although monaro is turbo charged. In saying that, the monaro standard brakes were ordinary, and it was a bit of a sailing boat / more comfortable of a ride and the seats in the R8 vy11 clubsport were quite a bit harder. So after fitting new brakes / suspension / new rims / guages, I would chose the monaro hands down..lol.

Hmmm I have been put in a situation, one of the lebo semi-trailer truck drivers at work said I could buy his vy clubsport for $25,000 :1peek: . It has a full exhaust system, 3000rpm stall converter all done from CSV performance (i think that's the shop). He said it's a legit ride I can get a rev check done and even an nrma inspection done and it's gonna come up perfect.
It's silver, original wheels, sounds horn and goes horn as we kinda had some fun :eyes:. The only problem is that he is lebonese, lol. I would love to buy it, drive it for a while and then sell it for 30grand and get the monaro. The reason he is selling it is because he is going over seas in 3 weeks for a few months and need;s all the money he can get. Couple of mates at work said he is a real bad c#nt not someone that you want on your bad side. So in kinda worried he will flog the money off me or some shit, it sounds to good to be true.

I went through this exact same dilemma 18 months ago and picked the Clubby, why? Because the Monaro is less practical in the long run, the clubby has 4 doors and better brake package and overall seems to get more looks than a monaro does.
My partners sister has a Monaro and she wished she didn't get it now as she is sick of having 2 doors and putting up with very slow moving seats. You will pay more for a Monaro than a Clubby of similar age yet the clubby will have been a more expensive car to start with.
I still feel I made the right choice, there is also something about owning a HSV instead of a Holden.

That's the same as saying a Monaro is a 2 door commodore, they both have good and bad points (I love the raked back windscreen in the Monaro) but I don't think the Monaro is "out there" enough for me, I like the in your face looks the Clubby has.

Well im in a hard decision.
Looked at two monaros yesterday, A 2004 V2 Series 3 Maronne Red CV8 R Monaro with 55,000ks on the clock and OldManMunro's 2002 VX Devil Yellow Monaro with 67,000ks on the clock.
CV8 R = Sunroof, Nicer inside, the R, Can get rid of my ss asap with a trade in for 12g. Stock as a rock. Can get it next saturday!
CV8= Devil Yellow, Highly modded, Sounds great, alot of power, though oldmanmunro still not sure if he is selling it and I gotta try and get rid of my ss which could take a month.
I am really stuck in trying to decide which one. I really like the CV8 R with the sunroof and newer inside with the extra goodies and all of that which I could get this saturday for 25g in cash and my ss.
But I really like the yellow one because of it's power and sound which I could get around 37g but oldmanmunro could decide not to sell it and I might not be able to get ride of my ss for a while.
What would you do?
CV8 R or CV8?

Depends if you want a hassle free transaction... And by that mean you don't have to worry about selling your car private, which sometimes can be a real pain in the arse. I think the CV8-R's were limited numbers aswell wern't they? Might hold it's value abit more aswell in the long run.
Plus sunroof =)
But at the end of the day it's up to you mate, You are going to have to drive it everyday. I personally love the new dash look in the CV8-R's.

Yeah well I do want to get rid of the ss asap and it's always a pain in the ass to sell privately. And there was only 150 CV8 R's in Manual made so thats a bonues and yes the sunroof would be great for beautiful days like today. And I also love the dash in the CV8 R it's more newer and feels totally different to my ss :smilesandbanana:. But the yellow one has had all the work done to it but it's 2002 and similar dash as mine but the yellow one is not %100 for sale and gotta try and get rid of the ss, hmmm look's like im leaving towards the CV8 R!

I think a lot of future buyers also will be looking for the vy interior so the resale on them will be better even more for a R model. Selling your car private is a pain. Can't remember what that colour is though any one got a pick(must be rare)!

OR, advertise your SS for 12g's and speak to oldmanmunro to see if he is ready now, or not. If so, that'd be my pick - the yellow munros look hot and a modded one - with KNOWN history is a bonus.
I would reckon that for 12g, your car would go quickly.
If oldmanmunro doesn't wish to sell, then your choice will be easy - the CV8-R.
Cheers and good luck with the decisions,

Well yeah I have always wanted a yellow one and with the mods munro has done to it, it's everything that I want. But I have always wanted the newer inside and the sunroof is a bonus but I could always get a sunroof put in the yellow one and upgrade the dash to a vy and still save money on mods. Hmmm I suppose it is up to munro if he wants to sell his or not when im ready.

Dane, make sure youv'e got the insurance thing checked out before you buy. Your 21 so HSV and insurance probably is too hard. If you can get insurance on the Monaro OK, it would make more sense than a HSV version. Logic says resale of a Monaro should be better than a VY Clubby, so again the Monaro does make a lot of sense. I like the VX Clubby more so than the the VY - I think if I was to upgrade it would be 6 litres for me so VZ Clubby would be my thinking, but 6 litres of Monaro would be nice - I like those bright yellow GTO's though - but out of my price range.

It's going to take me a few weeks to sort out what I want and need to do. In the long term you may be better off with the newer ones. A 6ltr or a GTO or even the R would be a better investment as they are (a) newer, and (b) rarer so more collectable.
It's a big investment, so be sure that what you buy is what you really want in the long term. A Modified CV8 will aways be a CV8. Don't think that buying a modified car is the end to it. Modifications are like a compulsion. Start with what I've got, and you'll be looking to stroke it, F/I or something else.
I was talking about getting a bigger car, but yesterday proved that my wife's Bora was up to job I had in mind for the bigger car. Less motivation for me to sell.
Ended up needing a new tyre as the sidewall was torn in the pothole.

Bloody potholes aye!
I called the dealer today and said look mate whats the best deal you can do for me with the CV8 R, he was like your car and 27. I said I would give you 26 and my car whenever your ready and he replied with "gotta speak to the boss i'll call you back". One hour later he rings back saying "look mate the boss wants 28 but I can get it down to 27 if you really want and I was like well i'll get back to you". I called him an hour later saying "ok 27 and my car" and he replied "I let the boss know and ill call you back".
He called me back saying "look the boss wants 28 and you want 27 how bout we meet at 27,500 as im sure he wouldn't say no to that", "you wanted 12 for your car and you got it, thats 2g off the monaro straight up and we did have it advertised for 45 to start with". I replied "look seriously mate all I can afford is 27 but see what your boss says". He ring's back "mate bring your car in tomorrow so the boss can look over your car and see where we stand at".
So now im starting to think f@ck it because I will go there and they will be like "well mate your car is only worth 10 the best we can do is 28". And I looked on redbook and the trade in for my model car is 12,000 to 14,00 so there a load of crap about it only being worth 10 whocares if its an x cop car. So im now starting to think just sell it privately for 13,500 ono and look for another car. It's just to much of a hassle to deal with this mob.

Yeah I know but the bad thing is I really want the car but yeah im just gonna tell him, look mate I can only afford 25-26 no more then that otherwise I wont have enough for insurance, etc. He reckons some guy is coming in with one of those honda 2000 cars to trade in but will hold onto the monaro for me, so he is full of shit.

Yep good advice.
Just say 25k. Dont give them a range and hopefully they will counter back with 26 like u want.
Give them the above reasons and tell them the car is not the colour you would prefer anyway and you would rather wait for a yellow one to come up in your price range.
Dont get sucked in. You have had the SS for years now so a month or so more wont kill you.
Also if you can sell your SS private. Just put 14 or something on it.
Dealers would probably prefer you paying totally in cash rather than trading in another V8 as I imagine they are hard to shift with fuel prices rising all the time.
Cash has a lot of bargaining power!
Dont compromise and settle on the 'next best thing' for slightly more than your comfortable
Patience is the name of the game :)

Dane, I realise you want to get rid of your auto SS, but just remember it is a buyer's market. Go in hard and strong for what YOU reckon is a fair changeover. If they don't come to the party, walk away. As stated, there are plenty of V8s sitting in yards now that petrol has gone up some more, so my advice would be to bargain hard and sit them out. They HAVE to sell the car, you do NOT have to buy it.
Cheers and good luck,

WOOOOHOOOO I now own a 2004 CV8 R Six Speeed Holden Monaro and I ****ing love it. I gotta get use to this manual buisness asap, I am so use to automatic and just smashing down the go pedal and taking off, haha. I already got young female teenager's yelling out of taxi's telling me to goto the clubs there going to. I already got Modded VY HSV Clubsports trying to race me showing off with the chicks he has, to bad I can't really drive manual, hahaha.
I got it for 26 and my car, Just Car Insurances covered me for $2000 a year with the highest ****ing excess in the world. $3200 if I make a claim and $3600 if my car get's stolen. I can't believe how high the excess is so hopefully I never make a claim, lol. I remember my mum when she had the ss under her name it was $3500 a year with $500 excess. Part from the insurance side of things I love my monaro and the next thing to do is the darkest legal tints for $350 from where I bought it, good price or not?
Lower it in the back end a touch and a exhaust, otr and mafless tune and I am sure I will be more then happy for a few months. How it is is gonna keep me happy for a month untill I get the funds together for mods part from the tints as that needs to be done asap.

Yeah goodbye automatic and hellopw manual and yeah ****ing oatht they are damn fun to drive. I love the changing gears and hearing the light roar of the car, I think it has a tiny exhaust but nothing big. Yep for sure a Sureflow 3.5" loud is on it's way as I love to hear the real v8 during the gear changing.
When I looked at oldmanmunro's car he had a dual exhaust and that sounded real sweet but he said to a scale to 0 to 10 he got 3 so it's not even that loud but it sounded sweet. So a loud is gonna be a killer, hehehe.
