They do have Air con and P/Steering etc

The Barina is due for a face lift yearly this year so it may pay to hold off a wee bit longer

Yes, Barinas now come with air, p/steer, p/windows, front air bags as standard. The only 3 factory option are:

*Automatic
*Metalic paint
*'Power pack' which is ABS with 15" alloy wheels (4).

Regarding the current special, check this link:

Hope it helps

Without wanting to start something like on another rebadged Daewoo thread at the moment, thiunk twice before buying one. It is a good price for a new car drive away but do some research on how safe they are and weather you want your son sitting in the passesnger seat. They are the last "100% daewoo" car left in the holden range and are a very old design and have one of the worst crash safety records of any new car on the Australian market.

But if the price is right and thats all that counts, buy it.

Go read the ANCAP crash test report for it, then have a think about whether you still want to buy one of these appalling little tin cans.

There's plenty of competition in that market segment and nearly all of it is better.

Having said that, it will still be better and safer than an old Laser.

she got her prices mixed up $13.990 is better for her,she looked at a hyundai but did'nt like it, does'nt want another f7rd,
I havnt really took much notice of little cars for safety is there a stand out model that is actually safe for a good price. unfortunatly some small cars dont have the luxury of air bags & side curtains like the VE's.
I might cruise a few yards for comparison & check out there safety records, but you all know what some girls are like, if they like something there is no stopping them, she wants what ever she gets lowered with some mags & tint,

bloody hell the barina does'nt look too safe does it, went and looked at the hyundai's same deal $13.990 drive away 5 year warranty, factory mags looked crap $850, tint $350, interior looked cheap but overall it did seem the better deal.
cant get a black one for 5 weeks, but ran out of time to look at what mazda has to offer so maybe tomorrow.

can anyone else comment on other brands

What about a Mazda 2? Just took one for a test drive today and they handle great and do go too bad either.

Depends what model. They start at 16.5K and go up to about 23K with all the extras. I think the auto version is about 1.5K more though.

From the workshop perspective, very little at all is going wrong with them, as they are a proven design.
Yes, some new small cars are newer and "better", but at $13990 driveaway, she should get a number of years out of it, if that's the plan (?), and a fair few girls seen to think they look "cute" (one of their most important decisions!)

the mazda might be a bit pricey for her once she blings it up, the barina with XU4 options is looking favorable, the hyundai bling package was'nt as good cheap arse 14 inch wheels, & real poofy seats she did not like it at all, but I will check out the mazda tomorrow, I like this part kicking tyres & bartering. had to laugh when I told her they would only give 200 to 500 bucks for her laser the look on her face was so funny,

I think a Mazda 2, or a Toyota Yaris, would be much better proposition, but I think you would need at least another $3 or $4K. If $14,000 as a drive away price is pretty much the limit, and the Getz is out, there's not a lot of options left (Kia Rio maybe - 4 doors for same money, but 1.4). What else, unless you go near new, maybe the previous Barina is a good choice. I think the new Mazda 2 is probably the pick in this class, but I suspect your probably looking at nearer $18,000 drive away.

yeh thats the trouble she has set a limit so my hands are tied but I will still check out the mazda, the getz looked too cheap inside thats what turned her off that one, she has plenty of time so we can keep looking at a few more, but maybe she might have to go up a couple of grand which might give her more options

I think my missus has her heart set on a mazda 2 genki (the one with mags and bodykit) in green. It's looks better than alot of the other small cars around though.

checked out the mazda2 (neo) today thats there cheapest car $20.200 drive away with option 1 safety pack, very nice neat little car, I was very impressed with it, with the pack it was definatly a much safer car.
the only fault I thought was the boot was a bit small, but I know b4 I tell her it will be $5 grand more than what she wants to spend, which makes it very hard to get some one into a safe good looking car, but you cant push people into a car they cant afford

planetdavo
15-01-2008, 04:59 PM
Yep. The $5000 extra in this price range is around 1/3 more expensive than the optioned Barina, a fairly significant amount!
Start spending that for the 2, and suddenly a low spec Corolla class car isn't that much extra, for a physically bigger, probably safer again car.
One has to stop somewhere.

Could also check out VW Polo - I am sure I have seen them $16990 drive away. Comes down to the budget in the end. If the budgets set at $14K drive away, you probably have only 3 choices in new cars.

i know its a ford but we got a fiesta, manual, five door for the mrs and bubbs to drive round in and they are a great little car:)we have done 50000 kms and no problems what so ever, no rattles ect, we tested the mazda 2, jazz, getz, barina, and the yaris and in our opinion the fiesta was the much better car of the lot :hide: shame bout the badge but credit where credit is due, very impressive for a small car.

blackbettyhsv
15-01-2008, 07:29 PM
thats fair enough mate she does'nt care about what badge is on the front, as long as it looks good reliable cheep to run, which most are.
what is the price for one of those

redvxr8clubby
15-01-2008, 07:55 PM
$15,990 drive away for a five door being advertised (normal rrp the five door is $500 more that 3 door).

You have 3 options at 13,990 drive away

Holden Barina 1.6ltr
Hyundai Getz 1.3ltr
Kio Rio 1.4ltr

All Korean made, run on the smell of an oily rag and do the job of a city run-about from A to B

They are what they are.

From all reports the Barina hasn't got any reliability issues and certainly no re-calls.

Maybe Korean is better built than the critics would have us believe ?

DEFINITELY this forums ignorant "they're all korean sh!t" critics anyway!
The current range kills Commodore for reliability, and has done so since they swapped over from euro range.

Mate at the moment you can get a getz for $9,990 for the current model just an earlier make...
either that or an I30...probably best small car on the market right now if you ask me.

if your heart is set on a barina, at least look at a low kms previous model barina, the last of the eurpean built one, my parants had one, was a very impressive car compared to the korean barina. the old barina can be around the same price as a new korean one, but it's worth it

Cheers

well she done the deal wednesday new barina black manual. they went to a local f&rd dealer & back to the getz, the cheapest mazda 2 was $20.450 too dear for her, but all along she liked the barina, she was shocked when they would only give her $400 for her laser, they would sell it to the wreckers because they are unsafe to sell back to the public. so for sales on the window.
they are throwing in mats headlight covers & full tank of fuel, trying to get some tint as well. they had a demo there but it never had enough K's on it to do a good deal,

Except that the Jazz will shortly be replaced by a new model, and is well behind the Mazda 2 these days (as you'd expect, it's nearly five years old).

I'd still rather have one than a TK Barina though :spew:

So after reading poor crash testing results she still bought the vehicle? I would have went second hand and got either the previous Barina or Ford Fiesta, both are euro designs and safe!

I dont understand why you would go brand new when stuff all goes wrong with the small cars as they are so basic!

Ah well each to their own, I cant talk my car is a death trap too.

DEFINITELY this forums ignorant "they're all korean sh!t" critics anyway!

Reliabilty of it is just a small factor. They just are not engineered right. They have improved but theres still a lot of new dated Korean cars being sold.

Hope she enjoys it - wow, the 2 is pricey little thing isn't it.

Yep just like the Fiesta! It doesnt take much to get it to the 20 mark either.

what do you do when someone has there mind made up, she did spent time looking at other models, but when you set a limit your options are reduced some what. if the hyundia had nicer interior she might have looked at it but it also had a very small boot just like the mazda 2, hondas are like mercs services are expensive, fiesta did nothing for her didnt even test drive that one, end of the day it is safer than what she has now 2 air bags are better than none, & she brought what was in her budget not over spending like some do to be better than veronica across the street,I noticed in fridays car guide a dealer in the city offering 6 years warranty on the barina, might ask the question monday if our bloke can do that as well.
thanks for all the advice it was a bit of a eye opener for us on small car prices
