Ive been attending this event for fifteen years. Missed it once. The first time i took my HK GTS, i picked up Top Street Machine Overall. Definately THE best cruising event of the year.
One of the members in our club noticed this on the website (http://www.pokerrun.summersun.net.au/index.html):
Cut-off date for Australian vehicles introduced for the 2008 Big Al’s Poker Run
After much deliberation, the organising committee of Big Al’s Poker Run have decided to limit entries of future events to cars manufactured in Australia prior to January 1st, 1978. This cut-off date will also include Japanese and European cars, while cars of US manufacture will not be restricted.
The decision to create a cut-off date has not been taken lightly, as there have been no restrictions on the type of car that can enter since the inception of the Poker Run in 1981.
Due to the steady growth of the event — from a little over 50 cars at the inaugural to over 700 in recent years — and the demand on resources and the restricted space available at venues, the need to limit the number of cars has been deemed necessary.
Always intended as an event for hot rods and cars of American origin, it is hoped that the creation of a cut-off date will attract more of these cars back to the event. The pre-’78 cut-off will still allow the classic Aussie muscle cars and cruisers that have always been a part of the Poker Run.
Holdens up to WB, Toranas up to LX and Geminis up to TD will ensure that those of you that love your Monaros, SLR/5000s and hot four Holdens won’t be disappointed.
For the Blue Oval fans, Falcons up to XC and Fairlanes and LTDs up to ZH and Cortinas up to TE will still be able to enjoy Perth’s biggest cruise, while Mopar fans will be happy to hear that the last of the Aussie-built Valiants — the CM — will also be welcome.
No LS1's invited thanks!!!

On an LS1 forum? A forum were many people find out about cruises, and may not know we are no longer allowed to enter and bring our cars to this event?
Where would you suggest I point out that this event is not allowing LS1's... the Ford forums? Im not running the event, just pissed off i cant take my car, as im sure many others will be too.

Sorry, but I don't see the problem, nor do I see a great big honkin "KEEP OUT LS1s"... the way I read this is, NO car manuafactured after 1978 is welcome if of Aussie manufacture, not just Holden's fitted with an LS1.
The organisers of the event have every right to restrict entry to whomever they want... having been involved in some car event planning, i can tell you that once you get past 200 cars, it's a friggin nightmare... 500, good grief!
Pre-78 manufacture ensures that the mantra of "Street Rodding" is preserved. An LS1 is NOT by any definition a Street Rod; this culture evolved out of the US for the muscle car era makes that were missing out on the Hot Rodding events around the country; the Rod events generally have a cut-off around about '48. Luckily for us car mad Aussies, the concept of street rodding caught on really well here - but the broader definition of the term has been diluted to the point where anything that has had any amount of work on it is considered a street rod. Sorry, but late model cars just aren't. Streeters yes, street rods - no.

Ease up on the bloke. Far out, he's just letting people know the facts. Loads of people in Perth with commodores would have shown up to be shunned if we didn't know this.
Thanks rhoads56.

Yup, got that... which is all fine, except for the title of the thread, which led quite a few of us to think that there IS a problem.
If there wasn't an issue, the thread could have been written with a completely different slant. Remember, we don't get the benefit of tone of voice when reading from the blue screen...

I reckon its good to be informed on this type of classic run even on this forum. If I still had an old classic ,the mobs of LS1's wouldnt bother me as much the tonne of ricers and such. I love the LS1's but if ya want to go on a classic run BUY A CLASSIC ASWELL.

Fair enough that newer cars have been banned from entering...they just do not belong and look out of place with all the old american muscle afterall it is a poker run for AMERICAN cars...but i do believe that genuine Brock cars should have been given some consideration

Since when? Every year, our club (monaro) gets an letter asking us to help inform people of the run. Same with the HSV/HDT club, commodore club, Tickford owners club, etc etc etc.
Someone told me today that only 10% of the funds go to charity. I think these 'charity' events should be more open with their accounting. Each year ive thought the entry fees were high ($54), but when its for charity, its a good cause. But if only $5 is forwarded on, then thats a different story.

Since when? Big Al's has alway been about vintage AMERICAN CARS period.
The start and finish venues have become more and more expensive what with public liability insurance and grounds reparation fees etc. Numbers have grown steadily in the ten years I've been a part of it and there just isn't enough room for further growth because it will become impractical. I believe 750 cars was the cut off last year.
Now, in recent years we've had more jap boy racers and a LOT of commodores and falcons of anything but "vintage" or classic pedigree. Yes, I know people will argue that a walkinshaw or a polarizer or or an ls1 SS is or will be collectable but the simple truths are.......
If you see 'em on the road in dozens or you can go and buy one tomorrow, AL won't give up a place for you because that won't turn heads.
