View Full Version : Astounded with VY V6 Fuel Economy

Have been a 4 cyl driver most my driving life straying away from the V6/V8 Petrol guzzlers until the last 3 months when I purchased a VY Series II Berlina V6 with FE2 and Boot Lip (standard HBD options) car has 105000 on the clock.
Since changing to 10W-40 Mobil Syn and running it on high octane V-Power and also using Synthetic injector cleaner (not the harsh stuff loaded with sulphur as most use) with a little pussy footing around without giving it a boot full at takeoff I average 8.8 Litre per 100klm driving from the Werribee area to the Airport West Area without effort. Although this is about 70% highway, the driving is done at peak hour, with hold ups experienced on a daily basis.
At times when I change the dash, to display inst fuel, it occasionally drops down to 5.6lt per 100ks when doing 100klm. I guess Jeremy Clarkson gave a the Holden’s a fitting title when he called the Holden’s a lazy Australian car (barely doing any work a 100 k’s).

cheers

That's a very impressive figure, mine only manages 10L/100km at best all with highway km's, although I guess I have the highway equivalent of stop/start driving with all the hills.

Sounds about right mate, my VN V6 gets about the same fuel economy as yours..

my vr stays around the 10 mark most of the time although on the highway the lowest ive seen it is 7.9 i think with no spare in the boot

I have a 04 Magna and a 07 VZ exec wagon and there is a world of difference between the two. In peak hour driving the Magna gets between 10.5-11 L/100km and on the same route the VZ 14.5-15.5 L/100. The old VS I had got very similar numbers to the Magna. I realise the wagon is a much bigger car than the Magna or the VS but another mate has a VY wagon and gets about 12-13 L/100km in peak hour traffic. As yet i'm not too sure the Alloytech is as economical as the old pushrod Ecotech.

You know you're onto a good thing when you see this after driving 50km after filling your tank...

You're doing well mate, my tuned VY SS avg 20L/100km and full tank says 400km until empty! But there are reasons why this is so :p

We drove from Adelaide to Echuca Moama over XMAS got 688 k from 60.9 litres
Not pussy footing but been on or just over the Hwy limit ,car loaded to the roof 3 kids and the MRS and me with the air on for most of the way and i was quite happy with the usage .

Pretty good for a 6 with a heap of weight to drag around.

in my VU V6, i get on average between 480-510KMS per tank. But it only lets me fill about 63L each time. That is with some pretty heavy driving too. Very rarely do i go a whole day of driving without giving it at least one squirt. Thats about 7.9L/100KM!! which is pretty good IMO.... especially considering thats no highway driving, all city.

You live in Perth city driving is bush driving for us people in Melb and Syd! I dont understand how people can compare fuel consumption with so many variables! So guy lives in Perth other praises their fuel economy when they are from Sydney?? Get the drift??

Modern 4 Cylinders will get you way less than 8.0L all the time, so its no magical formula, just how fuel consumption is improved with each new engine released.

You aren't calculating correctly - if you use say 60 litres for 500Km that is 12 litres per 100Km. You divide your litres by however many hundred KM you travel - so 60 divided by 5 = 12. For fuel consumption of 8L/100 Km you would use 40 litres to travel 500 Km.

i didnt get a chance to say earlier but how is that possible?
youd have to be doing well under 10 ltrs per hundy!

thats not bad at all guys especially the 1000kms to empty, at 9.7l mine showed 800km to empty and never filled it right up since it sits at 8.9 - 9.1l/100km/h at 58km/h av speed around town so thats good for a SS with 250rwkw, but ill be doing canberra to newcastle for the long weekend and am keen to see how it goes without resetting the dash

You would have to think the Trip Computer is out, if you include
the 50k done already that equates to a tad over 7l/100km, I
find that impossible to believe, sorry, call me a sceptic :)

Sorry to put this tread back on topic, my VY V6 with holden factory gas does 10 Litres per 100 kms on a trip and around 13 litres per 100 kms when doing melbourne city driving, considering lpg in melb is around 65 cpl and petrol around 140 cpl but for round figres let's say lpg is half price, you'd have to 5 litres per 100 kms for the trip to cost the same and 6.5 litres per 100 kms for the city driving to cost the same. better than 4 cylinder ecomony from my V6 commodore.

Cheers

My 03 V6 wagon showed averaged 10-10.5 from melbourne to sydney.
Going across traffic in the mornings-15km in 45mins she was sitting on 16.5. only had 45k on it when I sold it.
I wasnt happy wih it at all.....I dont try to drive to save fuel either tho, I just drive normally.

Be as sceptic as you like. And you're maths are correct, 100km/h, dead flat road I get very low 7.XL/100km. After driving 300km and averaging 8L/100km the distance to go was already a decent sum, but once I filled up it gave me that. And actually, the trip computer is conservative. I over ran it once by 20km when I was trying to find a servo!

I drive a BF factory dedicated LPG wagon for work - does about 18l/ 100Km around Sydney plenty of peak hour traffic. The VY V6 wagon I was driving before (petrol) did 14- 15 l/100Km around town. So 13 litres on gas around town is very good.

Black I agree, the SS odo is not true figure, as to get the speedo reading he would have filled up, hopped on the freeway reset while driving (car at this time will be using 5 to 6 lt, for 50km and stop snap taken, is do able as I just tried it, but again is a fudge figure unless doing a 100 ks per hr with no traffic non stop for the whole tank.....not likely

Cheers

Might as well just call me a liar straight to my face then mate. I've already said the circumstances. 300km on the highway already, fuel up, back onto the highway. It's not a fudged figure. I never said I got 1050km to that tank did I? No. And no, I didn't reset the trip after 50km. I hit the first set of traffic lights in Mandurah coming from the south and was flicking through the trip computer and saw that, so I took a photo. :flipoff:

I also regularly check my actual fuel consumption by doing the math and the trip computer average fuel consumption has never been inaccurate.

Dont take things out of context and then start bagging people.

Edit:
Take another look, it's not the odometer either. There's a difference.

My first country trip in the VE averaged 9.2 with a little bit of city driving before hand, so it can be done.

Most of the time around the city I average 14L/100km and that isn't being particularly nice, but it isn't flogging it at every chance..

I just wish I had of swapped to a v8 earlier. The fuel isn't that scary

Just got back from Cairns, we have a Honda Euro there and in a Honda euro in Melb every working day.

In Cairns we got 700 per tank easily, in Melb we get about 450.

So its pointless thinking "your" car is a specifically designed monster that is easy on juice. Its not. It may give you about 500ml better than compariable car but highly doubt anymore than that.

Its just like saying well in Tasminia when its hot my body only consumes 3 litres of water a day, compared to 6 litres in Cairns.

Anyone living not in Syndey or Melbourne would get better fuel economy than people who do.
